i fell into the ``gypsyjazz`` barrel in 2001, my head starts surfacing now, back to standard jazz-guitar , but everytime i hear that stuff from those days, i can still feel the exitment all the Montréal guitarists felt when Birelli came to town and in the subsequent years, it was a ``frekin``buzz, it felt like jazz was reinventing itself, and we were all part of it ! and we were !!! great times !!!
I always picture a bar full of fancy people in velvet smokings and dark tail coats, curls of smoke slowly dancing in the air, drinking expensive wine in crystal glasses as night sets over a Paris teeming with life and excitement under the yellow light of old street lamps, during a cool summer in the 1920's.
Not really new, but geniusly renewed by a GREAAAAT master, Mister Bireli Lagrene !!!! He is not yet recognized as a modern jazz genius, as well as he should be...pure gipsy music is truly flowing down his brains and fingers !!! What strikes me is his ability to always make out something you never heard before in his improvisations. This tell he is a real master in improvising. Listen to the final at 27'20'', it's pure beauty ! Bireli chaque fois que je t'écoute, je suis sur un petit nuage ;) MERCIIII :)
Not both? Dear Alex, You asked, i respect your question, so please let my state my point on that. they are both very very very awesome. and they even both played in this concert together. how can so many people still think its a competition? In sports there is not the same person winning every event either. If boxing champions wanna know who is the best they literally have to fight! before the fight NOBODY knows who is better! so how can someone be better or the best at music?!?! I used to do that too, calling people "the best". I often said Bireli is the best in the world, i often said Jimmy Rosenberg is the best. and now lets wake up and face it: as long as those both live, there cannot be "the best". what you can say tho: "There isnt the best - but there is no one better than bireli" sounds cooler and is more correct. While most people say: "its only subjective who is better" i have a more radical view: The mathematics behind music arguably do not make a comparison of better or worse possible in music. Actually i personally think that there is a certain sensation in comparing musicians. Calling Jimmy Rosenberg the one best guitar player makes me happy in some way. But when i do that i already know: He is probably "better" in adding a heavy dynamic "weight" to his playing, but Bireli is leagues above him in other things like creating complex, advanced yet beatiful harmony and melody. thx for reading, keep swinging with Martin Weiss and Florin :)

It is important how playing.
Bireli Lagrene - guitare solo
Florin Niculescu - violon
Hono Winterstein - guitare rythmique
Thomas Dutron - guitare rythmique
Diego Imbert - contrebasse
Damm that fiddle player is good
I agree. His name is Florin Niculescu. The best fiddle player in this style since Grappelli in my opinion. :-)
Not Martin Weiss?
Not both?

He's the best.
Jimmy Rosenberg sometimes sounds mechanical. And Bireli every time sounds searching the right mood.
Im dying,,, :-)!!!! Birelli mgod ....
He's got a style, no doubt
25:02 - 25:06
38:40 - 38:48
43:55 - 44:02 and of course
46:02 - 46:06
love the start @ 34:50 - sounds like a portion of dvorak's American suite
I can really see why Synyster Gates loves this music so much.
25-13 to 27-10 has gotta be the most tasteful use of his ridiculous vituosity I've ever heard.
Man that guy can play!
27:42 I love it!! :D
23'30 Si tu Savait Search the Django original version "Django Reinhardt - Si Tu Savais - Paris, 14 November 1947"
I want to dance!
# 11 must be "Minor swing"! Check it out, please!
and rhythm guitars!
set list is fucking heavy !!!
ça me rappelle la grande époque du jazz avec Stéphane Grappelli , etc ...
And violin too.
No.3 Embraceable You(G.Gershwin)
BTW 34:14 is Paganini's Moto Perpetuo
Words fail. This is the shit!
Yes, it made me laugh too. The captions seem one step removed from the tunes. Still, that hardly detracts from the performance?
Yes, you're right. Fault of the editor.
0.50 seems so sick
41:09 That sounds very familiar. What piece is it from?
Diego Amber is also excellent with cotrabajo!!!
diego imbert
34:20 wow!
But he could play the guitar just like a ringing a bell...
00.50 seems so sick....
Hono Winterstein is Titi's brother?
Django est résucité ! N 'apercoit-on pas Thomas Dutronc ?
ahah "Hothouse", i knew i knew it, but.... lol
5:58 what is the name of this piece?
no kidding.
Ahhh.....
i know ....lol
the first one is lol
you can buy it for about 18$. aren't your tears worth 18$?
reinhardt?nooo BIRELLI
goddammit its Bireli. with one "L"! aint no italian name like pirelli. and bireli's playing is very different from djangos. clean your ears man!
he and joshco stephan are as good if not better than Jango.
***** Stéphane is the king, Florin is the prince
Liz Pierson
