Fighting such odds,in terrible heat,no food or water,I'd love to know how they encouraged each other,I wonder if they have a sense of humour like us scots,an just insulted them,I'd love to know what they were saying to each other.
Anyway they were incredible,an showed what a fighting force looks like, the charge at the end, incredible, they ran out of bullits, and still didn't surrender.
A fantastic video my friend,an who wouldn't want to here this story again an again.

I think it is the pure energy of despair. When you have nothing to lose, and no other choice you will fight to the bitter end. Thank you very much for the support bro!

What is with France, Mexico, and prosthetic limbs?
In the First French Intervention in Mexico (the one before that featured in the video) Santa Anna lost his leg fighting the French. Then, in the Mexican-American War, his prosthetic was seized as war booty by soldiers from Illinois, where it still rests as a prized trophy.
It's a bit like the opposite of the Legionary Officer's arm. The prosthetic arm was lost in the midst of heroic bravery and was returned home where it encourages patriotism.
Santa Anna's prosthetic leg was lost during an embarrasing defeat in which he fled the battlefield like a coward. Then, it was captured by the enemy and kept in the foriegn country of his enemy as a continuing emblem of failure and shame.
The Legion gained honor among the French (as well among their Mexican enemies and others), while Santa Anna is hated by the Mexicans and Americans to this day. I don't know if the French even remember him enough to care.

We honestly don't know about Santa Anna. I think I knew him from the Mexican-American War but only by name. It is kind of embarassing to have it's prothetic stolen and exhibited as a war trophy indeed 😅Thank you, I absolutely did not know about this anecdote!

If the FFL was formed in 1831, and this took place in the 1860s I wonder if they became equiped with the Gras rifle, which was a single shot bolt action rifle. I notice the captions show them firing cap fire rifles. Only interested as I have a pair of Gras rifle bayonets, that are inscribed by the St Etienne armoury near Paris. This battle is not unlike the battle of the Alamo against the Mexican army….many against the few.

It must certainly have been used during the colonial wars by the legion between 1874 and at least 1890, as it was the troop's regulation weapon after the Chassepot rifle. And yes, it sounds a bit like Alamo you're right, thank you!

It sounds like the Legion is similar to the US military in that, the more you remove their officers, the more aggressive and obstinate they become.
