MORI"SONG"BEST,,,PERFECT VOICE EVER
Sir Alan, thank you again for the high quality video/audio!!! *That G#5 belt at **4:39** was fully engaged (chest voice dominant) and free!!!* She is developing into a future all-time great vocalist. One of the main reasons for this is due to the *"chestiness"* of her voice. Let me explain... I often hear detractors say that Morissette's voice sounds "too chesty". *On the contrary, "chesty" is a very good thing!* A fully developed chest voice is what produces this *special blend* of brightness, yet having depth, darkness, richness to the voice. In other words, a voice with *"chiaroscuro".* Chiaroscuro is a "Bel Canto" term. The old school, original Bel Canto opera singers were trained to develop their chest voice in order to have "chiaroscuro". Today's modern opera singers are not trained this way anymore, unfortunately. This goes for modern contemporary singers as well. That's why most modern singers today have this signature bright tone, but without richness and depth to their voice. Secondly, only a developed chest voice can produce *"squillo".* Squillo is another Bel Canto term. A voice with squillo is a voice that possesses rich overtones. Today's modern vocalists barely have chiaroscuro. They barely have squillo. In other words, it is rare to find a singer that has a fully engaged (chest voice dominant singing), big voice. Today's training is very different.
*Morissette may not be an old school Bel Canto opera singer, but from all the contemporary singers today, it is her voice that possesses a strong semblance of good chiaroscuro and squillo.* Whoever trained her (maybe its her own personal training) deserves kudos! Maybe it's because she grew up on Rock ballads (her dad was a member of a Rock band), where the best Rock singers are trained to sing in a fully engaged chest voice. Did you know that a lot of the great Rock vocalists trained in Bel Canto?
Now, people often say that "too much chest voice" causes constriction in singing. *This is wrong.* Ask any old school Bel Canto singer and they will tell you that singing in chest voice is never the issue. *The issue is the Valsalva maneuver.*
Quoting an expert in the 'old school' Bel Canto system of singing:
"The valsalva maneuver is a medical term. There are two kinds of valsalva maneuvers. The first is commonly referred to as the bucco-nasal valsalva. A good example of this is when your ears feel plugged and so you hold your nose closed with your hand and your mouth closed while trying to blow air out. *The other valsalva - the culprit in constricted singing - is the laryngeal valsalva.* This maneuver happens when we lift something heavy, cough, laugh, sneeze, when women give birth, or when we push out our poop. It is the closing of the glottis while forcing air out against it. While this may be good to help us lift a heavy rock, it does not work in singing. In fact, it greatly inhibits the free vibrating ability of the vocal folds. So, as singers we must find a way to completely circumvent this maneuver. That is done through the proper coordination of the breathing muscles. Many voice teachers today bypass fully engaged, big singing because it tends to cause a student to "constrict" or go into the valsalva maneuver."
So, instead of training their students to bypass the valsalva maneuver, today's modern voice teachers are wrongly teaching their students to sing "less chesty" past A4. This explains why most of today's singers have a mid to upper vocal range that is thin, overly bright (without much depth and richness), and whiny-toned. Then, you have another variation of modern singers who have a hollow, coreless tone in their upper range. This the popular sound today! It's ok, but not close to being the best sound! Listen to the old-school Bel Canto singers and you will realize what you're missing...
Morissette is 27 years old and is still not in her prime, imo. The good news is, she still sings "chesty" after all these years! It feels good to sing "chesty", after all. It takes over a decade to develop the chest voice to be fully engaged and free in the upper vocal range. Morissette is very close to getting there! Yes, sometimes, there is valsalva constriction in her upper belting range (notes above E5). This is fine! It's part of the journey of training and developing the chest voice! In this latest concert, her upper belts sounded fully engaged and free, and she was still singing "chesty", as you can hear! Over time, she will learn to be consistent in bypassing the valsalva maneuver. *When that happens, watch out.* Sometime in her late 20s and early 30s would probably be her prime years. The key for her is to continue to sing "chesty". It's fun to witness the growth and refinement of an all-time great vocalist!
The term, "mix voice" is the "modern" solution by voice teachers as a way to teach their students to bypass the constriction in the upper vocal range. The problem is, most "modern" voice teachers teach you to disengage the chest voice (past A4 note). They teach you all these "gimmicks" that essentially disengage the chest voice, *resulting in a thin, overly bright, and whiny vocal production.*
*What they should be doing is to teach their students to disengage the valsalva maneuver, in order to give freedom to the chest voice!*
Itβs my pleasure! Because itβs Morissette!!!β€πΆπ΅π
What about regine velasquez, can you perfectly explain her vocal prowess? Thank youβ€
@@jenepherlusaynon997 Regine is a legendary voice. She uses two main voices: 1) A light head tone (which sounds like a songbird, hence why she is called, "Songbird"); 2) A powerful, bright, forward resonating belting voice. She builds a song with these two voices. She dominated OPM with it, and until today, Filipinos are attuned to her signature sound. Regine has a very developed chest voice, but my main issue with her technique is that she uses twang. If you are a Regine fan, pls don't be offended. Many great singers use twang. Now, if you read my comment above, then you already know that all 'big voice' singers will have to overcome the dreaded Valsalva maneuver. The way Regine circumvents the Valsalva maneuver is by using twang. Twang kind of solves the Valsalva maneuver issue, but the problem with twang is that the voice production will sound *overly bright (lacking richness and depth).* Think Patti LaBelle, who uses a lot of twang. Regine uses twang as well, but not as much as LaBelle. Twang is when the opening of the epiglottic funnel is made smaller by bringing the arytenoid cartilages closer to the lower part of the epiglottis. Basically, you are making the opening of the epiglottis smaller. As a result, the sound production gets clearer and non-breathy, and you can increase your volume, BUT, the tone becomes overly bright (lacking richness and depth). If you want your voice to have "chiaroscuro" (the perfect blend of having brightness, while also having depth and darkness to your tone), then twang will not be good for that. Nevertheless, this bright, powerful, forward resonating, clear tone is Regine's *signature* sound. That's why she is a legend. I hope this helps!
She's amazing as always. Morissette is on another level. Her voice sounds great. β€Morissette

Is she pregnant? She keeps touching her belly. π
She's feeling her diaphragm maybe. That's a common gesture of singers.
no she's not. She's trying to feel her diaphragm if it's working
Its a part of breathing control technique.
Sounds not good only for Regine.......
