Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless represents the best execution of the series' trademark combat and level systems to date. It's a showcase of features that have been perfected over the past twenty years to be enjoyed by players, both new and returning. While there are a few new concepts that could have used more work, and it's a shame that the Switch version is noticeably compromised, it's a major step back in the right direction for a long-running franchise that's got a legion of loyal fans for a good reason.

Been a fan of this series for YEARS. Definitely picking this one up, dood!
I really do like the sprites better than the 3D models. I don't know why they haven't tried to use 3D models to automate sprite creation instead or at least as a template. It'd look more appealing imo.
Disgaea 5 is where the series peaked for me that story was amszing too
D5’s theme song was absolutely amazing! The most fastest, musically intelligent, opera, orchestral rock track I’ve ever heard.
Maaannnn i cant agree enough, was amazing
Facts
Cant lie i love 5 but 4 was solid too love the pirate system
From a gameplay perspective 5 is peak. The story and characters however were by far the worst in the series to the point where I almost immediately started skipping every cutscene after the first few chapters. Absolutely unbearable.
I definitely got turned off by the automation heavy in the previous entries, so I’m glad to hear they’ve given more incentives to actually play the game yourself!
I love this series, skipped 6 but getting this one!
Yeah 6 is the only one that isent good.
@@rodyvanhulst This one is just what 6 should have been. It still looks worse than 5, runs worse, and has less content..
Same here. Just bought 7 on Steam.
Great review! I haven't touched a Disgaea since playing 2 on the psp ages ago but it's nice to see the series alive and kicking.
Also kudos for introducing the phrase "riding the struggle bus" to me. Definitely going to use that in the future lol
I recommend you play disgaea 4
I reccomend you play prinny exploded and reloaded
You missed out. Disgaea 4 complete is the best in the series
My only problem with this review is being old Disgaea is 20 years old. Now I feel old...thanks NoisyPixel
😆
Both Noisy Pixel and Disgaea 7 are KILLIN IT!
Im so looking foreward to this for the story alone. Disgaea 6 was the only one i dident like from the series so im glad there back on track. The storys are always packed with the best kind of humor.
Cant wait for the full game, already have one 9,999 character on the demo, doing my 2nd character.
HOW? 😂
On the demo?? Hahaha that's some dedication!
My favorite game series!! 😁
I think I'll wait for the complete Edition as always
Man, the switch seems to really show its date. I haven't had any slow downs while playing the past few days on the PS4. Trying to select elements with a jumbofied character on screen kinda only slows down the cursor for some random reason when moving from the jumbo char back to the main field, but shoulder buttons to select units directly help to overcome that.
The only grind I noticed so far was, characters sub level 10 were basically canon food. In other words: one shot targets.
Yeah on ps5 this game is amazing minus the season pass debacle. I do wish I could grind on the go though :(
glad i found this channel while looking for the review of this game
hoping it comes to steam deck. I usually don't mind frame rate dips in a game like this but it was pretty extreme in switch version of 6.
It IS coming to steam. Whether it'll be deck compatible is a different story
@@RaifSeverenceI read a review that's the steam deck is the best to play this game. Switch is definitely a good choice also portable wise. But the steam deck is compatible out of the box. With tweaks, D7 will run great.
Glad to see this series getting back on track! Does anyone know if Disgaea 6 is worth playing on PS5? I skipped it when it first came out.
I played all of the disagea games and loved them all. I couldn't finish 6.. Take that how you will
I wouldnt bother. I couldnt finish 6. 6 is definitely the worst of the franchise
I would just wait for 7...
It's okay. I enjoyed it. But it's my least favorite for sure(I only played 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 in Japanese).
I wouldn't say it's worth it unless you get it on a flash sale
@@milesdarobot4980I hate three. I can’t believe you played that one but not four, four is like the best 😂
Good review, I'm waiting for a sale on Steam to get it. As you said, the Switch it's struggling with games for a few years now but the Steam Deck it's perfect for this game(and it's been my go to console for portable games for almost an year) and that's where I plan to play it. I have played Disgaea 5 on the Switch in the past and now I want to try this latest one.
Nice coverage.
Hope they release a patch addressing performance.
Doubt it. If it's the same with the Japanese version then it will be the same here.
Not really NIS's fault. The Switch is an outdated system.
I think the series, plot-wise, has run its course, but none of the other in-house NIS titles have taken hold to the degree that Disgaea has, so we keep getting them. I do at least applaud the team for the aesthetic switch-up.
Meh, I dont think they've even scratched the surface of the plot possibilities. You don't have to try to keep covering the same ground, the Netherworld is a big place with tons of possibilities.
Thats apologist excuse at best, shilling at worst. They can do so much better than just repeated characters, bad jokes and 4th wall breaking fests.
Disgaea 4 was the last time they gave a shit about plot.
@@JayceCH.This is weirdly aggressive and seems out of place targeted at Disagaea of all things. Disgaeae 6 may have whiffed but they were clearly trying to do new things...it just didn't work out so in 7 they did a more cautious return to form. You're just getting older and more jaded, it becomes harder and harder to get impressed the more you see and your standards for what is good only go up. you're well on your way to being an old man yelling at clouds.....if you're not already there lol. Reality is years from now some kid will prolly be saying the same thing you're saying now...but 7 will be his good example instead of 4. Its funny honestly.
"Keeping all of the QoL changes" Well there isn't any shared XP and you can't use auto battles in item worlds but at least the juice bar is back. Well, it's more restricted in some good ways. Might play this on PS4 though.
Reviewer here. I kinda think that manual battles in item world is for the best, especially since that's where a lot of players are going to spend the most time, but I do understand being frustrated by the limitation. I think it was probably a necessary evil.
@@ColinNP Yeah, I'm mad hearing about now that Item worlds are limited to 10, 20 or 30 floors depending on their rarity now. I think that's a welcome change since giving every item or so like over a hundred floors just felt too excessive... even for Disgaea. Just would make trying to do all the items a bit of a hassle but Disgaea was about that grind anyway. Thanks for the review!
Auto battle coming back at all is a fucking disgrace.
@@Axilstealspie to say it's "back" is really kind of an overstatement. Having played both games, I can tell you it is *miles* less present than it was in D6.
So happy they went back to form with 7. 6 was a disgrace to the name. NIS games continue to be some of my top favorites.
It's a shame cuz I liked 6. I get why people don't like it as much but 6 and 3 got me into it. 6 is awesome if your new to the series. I'm excited to try 7 since people are saying it is so much better
Outstanding review! I might just grab this.
If I can make a suggestion.. whenever you’re talking about performance you should actually SHOW what you’re talking about. It’ll give us a better idea on how things are running.
They are finally going back to what made the game amazing
I’ve bought and collected all games but had never finished one game. lol. Just love it but can be very long and difficult.
You can likely finish this one. Theres auto battle options haha
I keep hearing good things about this game but 6 was such a trash fire that I can't help being skeptical... Watching the reviews does make me want to go back and fire up 5 again though, that game was a blast.
I have 1 & another Disgaea on the switch and I have the psp visual novel Disgaea. I am not good at strategy rpg lol
I'll just say, it's a true successor to Disgaea 5.
Would like spin off of this series different from strategy rpg, rogue like dungeon etc, or dynasty warrior style.
3d model looks fine.
But i still remember oogling at that beautiful 900p spirtes on the ps4 lol
Best review ive watched in a while. Genuinely.
😭 Thank you, I've been getting some rough responses on other reviews recently so this made my day
@theliriul don't let them get you down, yours is a thankless job but good reviewers like yourself make gaming better as a whole due to keeping us from purchasing games we would otherwise hate. Not to mention it's always really cool to get insight into things you would never consider or to simply have a professional echo your own sentiments can be such a profound thing in such a devisive industry. Thanks again!
'..was it worth having 3D models in the first place' I mean is there a single positive over 2D sprites? they don't even enhance the battle animations
The animations are way worse in previous disgaea. At least with 3d they can make unique animations. With 2d, every single character had the same animations with some basic animated vector images...
@@MayCryistsure, but most fans prefer the 2d ones, mostly because how Flashy, Snappy and Heavy all of it is
Like compare Adell D5 vs D7 Vulcan Blaze for example
Can anyone answer please. Got to chapter 3 and every quest in the quest shop vanished. I accept a new quest and its not there.. is this yet another bug?
This is what the FInal Fantasy devs just don't seem to understand....
If someone buys a game in a shooter series, for example Call of Duty, they don't want to pop it in and realize they have become a wrestling game. No one wants to buy a racing game, and find out you race with card mechanics.
People who love a series WANT them to stick to their roots and just expand on that...They DONT want genre's swapped around. This is why Final Fantasy or Valkyrie profile as series are going downhill, with only remake holding on mostly because of nostalgia, and games that stick to their traditions, like Persona, Dragon Quest, and now Disgaea holding on to their faithful fans while gaining new fans, and leaving them in the dust.
In another 20 years, FF13 through 16 will be seen as forgotten bargain bin games, while disgaea 7 will probably be a beloved classic-high-priced collectors item. Kudos to NIS for keeping it digaea, and just making it better than ever!
But what about tower attacks? Are they back?
cant decide if i should get it on the pc or the switch...
Man, these 3d disgaea games are just not good on the switch. Either it looks bad for decent performance or look decent for terrible performance.
Six was so blurry at times
Bro, even Zelda is blurry AF.
Great review thanks!👍
I’m glad the multi hit came back
It's annoying how a game like Disgaea, that's not even technically demanding, would still have some performance issues in the switch.
I still yet to play any disgaea, I'm interested but I wonder if this is a good entry to play or I need to play the previous ones.
You do not need to play any of the previous ones. Disgaea is just like most JRPGs. Different cast and story each game. Just jump into whichever one interests you
5 is definitely the best
The reviewer: the problem with 6 was autobattle
Me: ...... there was autobattle???? 😮
I'm less than a minute in. "Reviewed on Switch". I fear. I remember how Disgaea 6 ran on launch on the switch...
I have the first game first on PSP and then the Switch version but I never managed to really like it and get into it so I’ve never played the later entires in the series.
I’m intrigued by the series.. I picked up a few of them.. But for some reason I never really stuck with it.. It’s just so weird compared to your typical SRPG
Better than 6? Not difficult. I'm glad they made an "experimental" game and then dropped some of the worst features (number inflation), but the lack of classes still stings.
wdym lack.of classes, 7 is anything but lacking of classes, to date 7 has the most number of generic classes out of all disgaea games
@@rei1556Has class bloat with the female/male classes being pretty much the same and only four new classes. 7 is honestly disappointing from a class standpoint and there's no asagi.
@@concretedoggo6583 tell me you don't know about disgaea without telling me you don't know about disgaea, lmao
I wish you didn't have to physically reincarnate 136 times
"Disgaea 7 really benefits from the convenience of being on a portable console"
Me, a PC player: *nervous laughter*
I hope somehow some way they make a disgaea demon slayer crossover that would be amazing seeing tanijiro and co. Teaming up with the disgaea protagonist and if you think about it this game has the perfect setting for the crossover
i still dont get it. whats the point of all the grind though?
>The console most suited to this experience
You mean Steamdeck?
Switch, yes
I will never understand the complaints about auto battle in 6 or the huge numbers. Also, sad that none of the reviews of this game I've seen so far accept one even mentions the extremely poor translations on the skills.
What do you mean? Auto battle is absolutely turbo cringe, and I'm angry that it's coming back at all. Wtf is the point of a grind game if you take out the grind by leaving your game running when you go to work? Where's the sense of accomplishment when killing baal?
@@Axilstealspie .........then don't use it.
Some people don't have any self control, how dare you expect them to just not use an optional feature...
@@Axilstealspie
Exactly. Auto battlers are so dystopic to me, what's the point of playing a game if the game plays itself?
@@wood1066 Dumb logic. A system that kills the whole point of the game is a bad system. Not using a system intended to be used to play the game is like choosing to walk with 1 foot. You can do that, but youd be stupid to.
Never played now interested in another game that no time for
Looks like I'll just play on the Steamdeck instead of Switch.
HOW is it even possible that this game needs over 10-11 GB of ssd/hdd space for my pc....(the way it looks compared to games i have it should be abnout a maximum 1-5gb at the most..
Very strange i think..
good rev tanx
Yay let’s go play with demons!
will be playing on ps5 to ugly on switch
Why would you buy it on the switch?
The 3D character models look very unclean.
Hold on. Criticizing how the game runs on Switch because your preference is to play it on the go is a very subjective and some what naive take. Instead, you might benefit from getting a Steam Deck. I like playing it on my monitor or tv and I really like to evolution to 3D, the Switch is just outdated. The series shouldn’t downgrade for the sake of the Switch. Switch can’t even handle the evolution of its exclusives.
So I'm assuming here performance was fixed to some degree here, not enough info was given.
Disgaea 6 was absolutely GARBAGE in that regard.
Best console suited for this switch….*cough* *cough* Steam Deck
console.... pfft, steamdeck is where it's at on haldheld!
$59 for a game with history like PS1 games were... just photo and text
Some folks actually enjoy fun
I don't know what it is but I feel like Disgaea 4 was the last good story the franchise had, I've played 5 but didn't care for it, the demo for 6 was just boring and 7's demo was just boring for me as well. It's like the soul of Disgaea is just gone now, i feel like this franchise should have branched out more into other genres by now or just ended and allow NIS to create some new IPs. Strategy RPGs can be fun but this is feeling repetitive in the worst way. Whats more the stories feel... lazier then they used to. Sure the first games were absurd but the plots were simple and fun with the characters being amazing. Disgaea 1 Laharl wants to take his place as Overlord. Disgaea 2 Adel wants to save his world form becoming a netherworld. Disgaea 3 Mao wants to become the Hero to defeat his father for destroying his game console. Disgaea 4 Valvatorez wants to topple the government to keep a simple promise. Simple but fun premises that go over the top fun! But 5, 6 and 7 feel not as fun to play anymore.
Its mostly the characters. None of them are as charming as Valvatorez, Mao, and Laharl. Sorry Disgaea 2, kinda generic hero type protag but the plot was good.
@@JayceCH. I agree, after 4 the characters don't feel as interesting or fun to watch or play now.
5 is the Best Gameplay Wise for me, but Yeah 4 has a better story
@@decusq Is 4 good ? I loved 1,2 and 5.
Hows story in 4 ? good mechanics like in 5 ?
@@soulflame5635 Disgaea 4 is good, the story is fun and it's Side story is also good. The characters are absurd and hilarious.
I love that people keep giving Nintendo money despite how evil they are and how trash the Switch is.. Really can't just play the game on a good system? Gotta keep enabling Nintendo making trash systems guys?
how is Nintendo evil? Nintendo is one of the most honest companies in the industry if not the most honest one, their President doesn't exploit their workers like other gaming companies do and they don't try to sell you an image of something they aren't, they are what they are like it or leave it but they are not evil
@hr-g4640 ... lol wow, someone's ignorant.
Nintendo will copyright strike any videos with their games on YT despite fair use laws.
Nintendo sued a guy to pay them for the rest of his life for no real reason.
Nintendo shut down the smash community and later the Splatoon community for siding with Melee.
Nintendo put an C&D against a family for making Joycon covers after a YTer who killed himself when all the proceeds were going to suicide prevention.
Nintendo allowed Pokemon games to be made with low budgets.
Do you want more. Nintendo is the most fan hating company in the gaming market and thats saying a lot.
Poor switch
Disgaea's long long long history has nothing to do with handhelds... yeesh. Also, the Switch version has always been the worst, and that's true for most other games... look at mortal kombat 1. You get what you paid for and that's a puny $200 piece of plastic that was oudated even when it first released.
First 😅😅
So should I get this on another platform if the Switch version doesn't perform well?
My nitpicks aren't all-encompassing and the game runs just fine about 95% of the time, if it helps. If you want it on Switch, get it on Switch, you'll have a better experience than getting it on a platform you didn't originally want to. 😅
Get it for Ps5 if you want that delicious 60fps and better graphics
PC
They should do 2d hd sprites i don't think the 3d look as good at All
LOL. You lost all credibility when you said that the switch was "best suited for this game". At this point, portability or not, the switch is NEVER the most suitable console for a cross-platform game. Nintendo has fallen so far behind the hardware curve at this point, that they no longer have an excuse. Knocking the game's score because of this shows that you are bias & not capable of writing a decent review. But then again, what did we expect from what is essentially a troll channel? Try again.
