I’m catching up on older videos and wanted to comment how much I appreciate this video. I was recently booted from two Facebook groups for even suggesting that witches look at alternative plants to use in smoke cleansing. It seems like raising ethical questions is viewed as gatekeeping, which I personally don’t see as being the same thing. Now that witchcraft is becoming even more popular (dare I say, fashionable?), I think it’s important that new witches are aware of the ethics of the craft and not just follow the, “do whatever you want in your craft” mentality. I’ll be sure to bookmark this video to share in the groups that haven’t booted me yet.
I used to grow my own white sage along with some other herbs, but then my plants died. I haven't been in a place to get new herbs to grow so I simply stopped using white sage in my practice because ethically sourced white sage is hard to come by. I usually just use rosemary or common sage now and it works just the same. Because it's so easy to substitute it, I will never use it again unless I get my own plants again. Thank you for this video and your perspective. :)
This is such an important message to share, thank you! Getting to know the local wildlife and plants has been such an important aspect of revitalizing my practice. I still have a lot to learn, but I'm loving the journey!
Your work and your voice are so appreciated, Ari, thank you. The links are excellent, and I look forward to deepening my knowledge. Thank you for opening my eyes further to these topics of vital importance. 💚
Just grow your own White Sage. I'm from the US and when I lived in NY with cold winters, I still had a long enough growing season to grow my own White Sage. White Sage can not survive the winters though, so I had to grow from seed each year. Also White Sage does not set seed on baby plants, so if you have winters, you will always need to buy your seed. White Sage is really a BEAUTIFUL plant. I feel that I did not truely appreciate WHITE SAGE until I grew my own. I used to sell Palo Santo and my supplier obtained ethically sourced. Even with only collecting fallen wood, I stopped selling Palo Santo because of the surge in comsumer need resulting in un-ethical harvesting. I no longer wanted to be part of that.
I live in Canada and the history of how the first nations were treated is beyond vile. They were not allowed to burn sage. Actually Illegal. I think about that before I do anything
I think the real reason as a native I hate ppl using white sage is because it's not apart of witch culture and it's being wiped out by everyone thinking it's cool to use it when it's not
