Edmond is a symbol of the injustices of human suffering caused by an unjust system that imprisoned an innocent.
Adversity struck him, the victim of envy, he lost everything, the pitfalls of fate when victims of doom.
In order to continue existing and growing, this system must slaughter others, take what he has (Danglars and Mondego) and protect itself (villefort).
Edmond is the monster they create, centemas of thousands of people who are destroyed, take what they have or arrest them to blunt their crimes. This fed hydra will turn against them.
Haydee is hope, the one who understands and shows that the way is not hate but moving on.

A good anime, but I disagree with some of the director's choices. I believe it was for cultural reasons. Alexandre Dumas is a Christian and the director is of another religion.
Edmond Dantes like Raskolnilkov ended up being corrupted by evil, being above the laws and could break them, but they were eroded by guilt, Edmond after the death of an innocent and for love recovered their humanity, Raskolnilkov with the Sonia's love and Edmond with Haydee's love.
In anime the count dies like karma, and in Christianity there is forgiveness and redemption.
Albert with his love returned his humanity, but he did not have his redemption as it did in the book as in the novel crime and punishment. It would be his punishment. Another religion and culture.

I totally agree. What's interesting, that I'm right now working on a bigger article about the different adaptations of the book, so I watched a lot of different versions - and there is only one beside Gankutsuou that ends with Edmond's death, and it's another japanese series based on the story. I think that fits much more, because Gankutsuou has too many ties to the original's Christian culture, while the other series was much more Japanese (for example, Faria wasn't as forgiving and loving as in the book - he was much more the "old samurai" archetype, therefore he completely supported the main character in his revenge). Your comment summarised perfectly what ends up weird in adaptations where there are a lot of differences in the religious and/or philosophical background of the writer and the director, and the director is not making enough changes to truly adapt the story to a different world.
I love Gankutsuou and this adaptation anyway, but I agree, it has it's flaws.

@@valentinewiggin9152 I don't like the 2002 version because it's just a swashbuckler movie. The anime was superior in constructing the story that is more complex and maintaining the dark charm of count.
The 1998 version, though more complex than the 2002 version, lacked count's dark charm, the ending was terrible, it had to be camille and edmond. For their lack of development and for the side effects of Edmond's revenge on Albeert. It damaged the life of the son of mercedes, as in the 1975 version she could never forgive that. The ending would have to be edmond and camille. Despite its flaws, the anime is superior to the 1998 and 2002 version.
In the 1988 version, Edmod is a dark person, but regrets his revenge and begins to want to repair his mistakes and forgives Dannglars. He helps morell in the end, as if to correct his mistakes.
The 1979 version she was the only one that appears the death of villefort's son

@@valentinewiggin9152 Edmond is a synthesis of raskolnikov and jean valjean. He is a dark person who became bitter after years of unjustly imprisonment in prison, thought himself above mankind for righteousness, hoped for guilt and redemption with Haydee. And haydee is like Sonia, someone who understands the count and with her love seeks to cure the heart of the count .

@@deruchettelethierry4814 My personal favourite (out of the movies) was the 1975 version - for me, it was the best in terms of acting, and even is the Count doesn't end up with Haydée, the story captured the morale - in the end, he is left alone, but he has to start over, try to find himself again, in a new role after losing the original, and losing the avenger as well. I literally hate the 1998 version, but not because of the storyline, but because it has some terrible acting, and it completely ignored the fact that Edmond is a calm, calculating, genius mind. He might not use it well, but he has an amazing intellect, and that version basically left it out, Edmond sometimes seems completely stupid, and that destroys the essence of the character. The 2002 kind of the same for me. It not only ignores the morale of the story, but Edmond also makes some awful mistakes in it, that the original would never make - like when he accidentally admits to Mercedes who he is. But my absolute favourite version will always be the hungarian musical. It's very different from the english musical version, but the actor who got the role, and who wrote most of the musical numbers for it perfectly captured the character - he is not attractive, but once he is on stage you just focus on him, because he creates the atmosphere Edmond should perfectly. Sadly this version didn't come out on DVD, so it's not widely known.

@@deruchettelethierry4814 I agree about Haydée's character, and also about Edmond in some ways, but I think he is a much more twisted and much more complex character. Jean Valjean is an absolute hero in terms that he could rise above everything with little help, and constantly struggled to do the right thing, showing care and love to those who had none. Edmond is basically mad. And that's not really a theory, there are clear signs in the story (like the fact that he can't even sleep without strong drugs), that he is not only a bitter person, but someone who is seriously ill mentally. He is genius, he is in some ways strong as well, because he could survive, he could find motivation to live, and yes, with big help from someone who loved him dearly, he started on a road that may lead to redeption eventually (because the book itself never reaches the point of redemption - it ends with hope and the chance of forgiveness, but not with full atonement), but he is not a good person. And that's partly why I love Gankutsuou despite the flaws - it isn't afraid to show how twisted this character can be, while still building up the understanding, and after a point, the sympathy towards him in the viewer. Most adaptations like to ignore the darkest parts of his personality, simply showing him as a bitter, but just character, forgetting that this is not a sane man. So yes, I really like Edmond's character, and his relationship with Haydée, but I also find that this darkness, and his mind is the most important parts, if someone tries to capture the essence of the character - it matters less if he ends up with Haydée, or ends up with no-one. Of course, this is mostly just my personal opinion on the character.
