  • One great source of greens for the summer here in NE Florida is Egyptian Spinach. It loves the heat and is a wonderful green that goes back to ancient times in Egypt and the Middle East in general. My autofocus decided not to work so the first couple minutes of the video are a bit fuzzy and I want to apologize for the video quality. Either way the information is still sound so please excuse the technical errors.

I have seeds started this year 2024 and am so excited! Coastal Mississippi, zone 9A. I was thrilled to learn that This plant is also the jute plant. It is food, Medicine, and fiber. How neat! I grow my own plant fiber and spin and weave with it, so this is especially exciting to me. One needs to let this plant get very large to process late season for fiber. Great video,
    Thanks. 🙏

Very nice. We just grow it for the leaves to eat but I had heard you could use the fibers. Good luck with your growing season.

They transplant so easily I love them I am in Phoenix az and I grew them in a 33 gal storage tote as in rubber made. I used a soldering iron for the bottom to drain. I composted in place with small tree benches at the bottom and the layered leaves from the garden and veg and fruit scraps. And about a two inch laure of compost and a light layer of worm castings and then stared over with out the tree branches then topped it off with the tree branches. Finished off with about 6 inches of compost worm castings a a little coco coir and wet it good and kept it just damp. It sat about 2 weeks then planted. It got afternoon shade about 3 pm. It did great. But putting it in the ground was great too. I love grazing in the garden on this plant..

Hello. I live in East Orange County. Got some seed coming and will try Egyptian Spinach this summer. As you know few vegetables thrive in our hot humid summers. I have read that this one does.

Yes it does. Well at least it did the year that I grew it. The key apparently is to keep it trimmed and to eat the young tender leaves. We had been eating the more established tougher leaves and did not really care for those. I will be paying more attention to the plants so that we can truly know if this is a green we want to continue to grow and eat.

Hi, Thanks for the video. I am in the northeast in the mountains. So we get winds that pretty much make a joke of anything tall I grow. Thanks for mentioning they can be cut back....i need short and wide so hopefully these work. Thanks again

Hello again Jim, How do you compare this Egyptian Spinach to the Malabar Spinach? Thank you Brother.

Well it has been a while so not too sure anymore. I know that it does not have the mucilage that malabar has so it is a bit more crisp I think. Give me a few weeks to get them growing and I can give a better answer.

How do you thin them out? I live in Colorado and planted egyptian spinach. Im arab and grew up eating it as a soup as it comes frozen from egypt, but when the asian store by my house had it fresh, old but fresh, i realized how much more i like it fresh and in a salad.

I just cut off the plants I do not want. Leaving a plant every foot or so.

I'm going to plant these. I live in Florida and regular spinach does poorly here.

Some of my favorites are Longevity Spinach, Malabar spinach and Tatsoi. You can also grow white chard as a good spinach type green.

Hi, would it be possible to buy seeds from you? And do you recommend to grow them in small pot until they sprout.

I don't sell seeds or plants since I am not really set up for that. You can get them online on Etsy or various other places. Egyptian spinach is a very good grower and I have planted directly into the ground many times in the past so I don't think it is really necessary.

I grew mine in totes and a bucket. They transplant easily. I grazed on the leave when I was in the garden. This past summer I actually learned a out by accident. I ran over a volunteer plant, cutting it got to be sbout 1 ft tall but spread way out.. the pods are twice as big as the one I planted and didn't cut it off. And the leaves have more moisture and of a more tender leaf. To he short one how ever, I am having a ha to d time with the pods not drying fast enough and am thinking about cutting the plant at ground level and hang it upside in the garage to dry the pods faster?

That should work to dry the pods. I know that you are supposed to cut the plant to about 2 feet and harvest the new and tender leaves. I just let them get away from me this year.
