Lol that's like one of my favorite aspects of any Zeppelin record. I discovered it before the internet and eventually thought to Google it to see if it was a thing. It's a thing.
It's not just music. I work in a library. We are judged on how many people walk through our doors, how many hours are used on the computers, how many books are issued each week, how many children finish our summer reading challenge. What we should be focusing on is the enjoyment people are getting from books and how it impacts on their lives, how a child progresses or even how an adult moves forward with their reading. That is more important but can't be measured with the numbers we have to record and the way we are assessed. It is messed up. Obviously the music business is about making money so has to be run like a business but this clearly misses a huge amount of information that is also essential. The music I love doesn't even get featured on mainstream radio. Who is to say that people wouldn't enjoy the music if they were able to hear it without having to hunt for it. All decided by those people more interested in money than the music itself.
Nikki, I've been reading all of my life and I ain't no spring chicken. I switched to a Kindle many years and I always find some time to read each and every day. I feel that a life's worth of reading has improved both my vocabulary and intelligence. Thank you for all that you do.

I read a great (i.e., awful but important) quote in Rolling Stone magazine 20 years ago (a magazine I normally dislike, my roommate had it). An RCA executive was greeting his new talent scouts. He started by asking what flavor of ice cream everyone like. One said chocolate, anther strawberry, another rocky road, etc. He then said, "So, think of all these flavors when you are scouting. And then go and find vanilla. Because vanilla is the #1 selling kind of ice cream". Sums up a lot of their thinking.
The Black Keys are one of my favorite bands and they really do create really unique and special songs and records together while maintaining a fun and natural sound. Magic Potion is full of amazing energy and guitar riffs and it’s so raw and pure, but even their most recent stuff is still so honest and creative. They really stay true to themselves as artists and musicians and that’s why I love them so much. Dan is also an incredible producer on top of being one of the best songwriters around today. The Black Keys inspired me to form a band 6 years ago with my brother and we’re still going at it while always focusing on the art of songwriting and musicianship and making original music we love. Creating music you love for the sake of creating something that is unique to you and the people you collaborate with and sharing it with the world. That’s what the Black Keys do and it’s what inspires us as musical creators.

As an independent music producer I know it's so hard to get yourself out there. The "competition" isn't other producers/writers, it's the revenue they have and direction the major corporations decide to push. Having bought most back catalogues going back decades they are quite happy to keep the masses listening to older music, unless they can strangle the lifeblood and creativity of anything fresh that comes along and that looks like it might gain a following
Justin your Videos never disappoint. I grew up in the skateboard with permission to land blasting and I have grownup with you. I love your approach to music and style in general . Keep up the great videos ! 🎵🎸
have seen them 6 times since 2004, all in Australia.. 5 times as a 2 piece.. something special when it's the two of them.. those early albums are amazing.. saw them play 3 tracks in a friends tiny record store, Dan was quiet but friendly and we had quick chat.. I was a bit star struck...very talented guys
JH sang the theme BEAUTIFULLY today. Always loved his voice, Still great. Also, these are my favorite type of JHRA vids as it's a perspective you can't get anywhere, a music industry insider who's still active and at the top of his game artistically (Motorheart is 9/10!)
God I love watching your stuff. I really appreciate you breaking down songs because I know nothing of music theory. I remember first hearing the Darkness and thinking, "YES". My parents were huge Van Halen fans and it was the closest thing that was new that wasn't something I'd heard a million times. That being said, would love to hear your take on Thumpasaurus. Crazy internet culture.
Magic Potion was the first record I heard from them. Stripped down, great song writing, Melody and guitar work. Love it. Especially the flame and elevator.
I remember Pat saying he didn't want their music to be playing in Walmart...I work at Walmart..Walmart played the HELL out of Lonely Boy on the ceiling speakers...lol... Walmart is the devil..
I do not like The Black Keys but when stars get into the brass tacks and break it down in terms of bean counting they always have interesting things to say because it seems all of them get screwed over at one point or another.
Thank you so much for leaving in the first 70 seconds. That was glorious. Also, you sir are a treasure. Never really listened to The Darkeness, but you better believe this channel has righted my ship. Cheers!

I really liked that Rogan interview of The Black Keys, I watched it through a couple of times, going in I very much thought I'd find that Dan was the enigmatic voice behind the band, but it became clear quite quickly that this wasn't at all true. It was obvious from Dan's respect and reverence for Patrick that the dynamic within the band differed from the external view. I feel very much that Patrick is Dan's muse in the band and that they appear very much like brothers who have whole heartedly accepted each other for who they are. Very cool dudes indeed 😎😎👍👍

Thanks for bringing my attention to this. I saw these guys live with Arctic Monkeys in 2012, and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. But over the last decade I've been less inspired by their output--it seems like every time Dan Auerbach collaborates with someone the Black Keys start to sound more like that someone, and not for the better. Hello hello, being a failed successful musician, (long story) no-one talks much about after the bubble bursts and you need to make a living after music. Glad I didnt end up famous and poor like some others have. You must know people who had a hit or two, dropped by label and then have to get a proper job. I still feel sick inside from the effort it took to get signed and then the failure. A life long dream coming true and your heart breaking when it fails after being 100% certain. - Its like being a 100m sprinter and running 9.5 in training only to always false start in races. - Sorry its a bit serious. Love the channel, you come across sincere and witty.
Streaming has destroyed the traditional industry right? The streaming platforms will be dragging millions off the old catalogues for years to come. And the artists will never have any clout unless they stop using those platforms. I think we’re in a foggy area at the moment. To me he sounds very bitter and he probably has made a lot of money up until now. Artists take themselves very seriously. They think the music is serious business too. I only listen to music on the radio now. I never did that before. Fuck it. I find music so full of opinions that at 46 I can finally let go of the idea of music as a serious art form. It’s just a bit of fun. The darkness had the right idea. Just make it fun, for fun’s sake. And get off your high horses. If you don’t like the industry that made you rich then just go off and do your own thing in complete obscurity. For your own enjoyment.
"Fuck that" is the perfect response, The industry is two polar opposites, 1, the record company owns the artist and the art, but they will push your creation to a targeted world audience because it is in their interests, and they could make a shit ton of money while giving you a small percentage and they also retain the option of interfering with your future art to fit whatever trend is most popular. Or. 2, self release and own 100% of the art, where the artist has full creative control, full ownership, and 100% of the royalties, but the downside is small sales, low visibility to target audiences, But when some dudes or dudettes in somewhere like Chile or Seattle are downloading your music with virtually no promotion behind it, it's the best feeling in the world, and then theres the .0039 of a dollar to collect too. KA CHING. It's a riddle, wrapped in an enigma that's locked in a conundrum.
It's a bit ironic though I mean the black keys came out wanting to be on every format and genre, so they made sure they had tunes that could be played on every station. I mean c'mon, the black keys on your local metal channel sandwiched between Metallica and Lamb of God? Point being you had to get rich using the industry in the first place, to be able to afford to act like you're flipping them off later. I think they simply are coming down from that power trip, and now see themselves being clumped in with Nickleback and are realizing they went too far.
I watch Rick Beato and he was saying some of the reasons modern music production is soo awful is A. producers just replace the band with studio guys and keep the singer and B. all the good producers were let go during the housing bubble crash and what we have now is the B team. So when I look at the AWFUL "top 40" today I wonder what use are major labels today outside of advertisement because it certainly isnt music production.
This is like a Rick Beato video waiting to happen. This guy is absolutely right. Screw Warner Bros/WMG. Makes me want to do something about their gobbling up the rights to all the great classic rock artists, and then coming down on music-related RUclips channels like the Blue-haired Lawyer when they play ten seconds of that artist's song in their video. Bands like The Grateful Dead should never belong to a conglomerate!
I just discovered this channel after being a long time TD fan…. Justin, love your meanderings about all things in the music business. I definitely didn’t catch that with your on stage persona. Can’t wait to see you in April in Atlanta. I’ll buy you a Coke (coca-cola)!
I totally love this type of musical form. Black Keys, White Stripes, Immortal Lee County Killers, all kinds of bands described as punk blues, not necessarily two-person. My favorite band of all time is The Gun Club, so underappreciated which is a shame.
Some really good music just gets buried away ....and it really sucks, youtube is a godsend for coming across amazing stuff ...but even then it is buried in the algorithm. I am coming across amazing stuff all the time like Cardiacs i only found out about a few years ago with sing to god which sent me down a rabbit hole. Few months ago came across Angel- The Tower song it blew my mind....and it was a 70s song i never heard of.
So where were the Black Keys when I was buying their CDs at £14.99 a pop, when they were costing peanuts to manufacture? Cant remember them bleating about their fans getting ripped off? Actually can’t remember Radiohead sticking up for me either..although now that they don’t make anything from streaming I’ve noticed they’ve put their head above the parapet.Cheers lads.
Hi there J, On the intro you sing an E on a Em7 chord. Did you come up with the melody first? I'm asking cos I'd expect a 3rd, 5th or 7th, but never such a "contradiction". Thank you and much love ❤️
The Black Keys are great. The last album and the current album are working along your discussion idea. Delta Kream is a passion project of Delta blues covers. Dropout Boogie is the crowd / record company pleaser. A lot of movie directors have similar deals, Christopher Nolan did Interstellar because he agreed to Dark Knight Returns.
Whitestripes and the Black Keys helped me kick the new music sucks mindset. Although a lot of it does, there is a lot good stuff too. I also suggest Reignwolf, Blue Stones, Black Pistol Fire
Hello mate : Rick from Oregon here, I have been pondering what you think about Spock's Beard/ Pattern Seeking Animals ? I be watching & wondering. Thanx for what you do !
Just listened to parts of a set they did for radio one 9 yeas ago. There sound seemed to be a mix from hendrix, Budgie, pink floyed, etc, got a whole lot of influences in there sound. For a me a band i would want to hear live, but not necessarily a band i would listen to at home. I was chatting to a couple of people about a band called JINJER, and a chick said she couldn't imagine you liking them or even liking that sound of metal. Which made my wonder what does Justin Hawkins listen to at home, what does he have in his record collection. The Darkness was defently rock music, and had some heavy riffs in some track's. So maybe a good idea for a video since you're talking about other band's, what is Justin's range of musical taste? Also would you ever consider bringing the Darkness back?
Immensely baked, sir!ha! When you said the black keys’, I thought you meant...er...b flat minor. How do you get a publishing deal? I’ve written songs but ain’t gotta clue how to .... publish it?
MHO. There are artists wanting to live to make and/or perform music on one side. There are entrepreneurs who risks money to make more money on the other side. I don't think bad about either, I've been a free lance and an employee. The problem with the music industry is that they were making money over the logistic, printing CDs and moving them around. Now that that kind of business is irrelevant the industry needs more to survive while artists are slowing returning to the era when musicians had to be active performers, teachers or composers in order to make a living. The era of making money off a recorded performance is slowly getting to an end.
Hey Justin, could you do a video about the current state of music ticket prices? Love the Rolling Stones but ‘golden circle standing’ tickets were £188

It’s just a bit of fun. The darkness had the right idea. Just make it fun, for fun’s sake. And get off your high horses. If you don’t like the industry that made you rich then just go off and do your own thing in complete obscurity. For your own enjoyment.
"Fuck that" is the perfect response,
The industry is two polar opposites,
1, the record company owns the artist and the art, but they will push your creation to a targeted world audience because it is in their interests, and they could make a shit ton of money while giving you a small percentage and they also retain the option of interfering with your future art to fit whatever trend is most popular. Or.
2, self release and own 100% of the art, where the artist has full creative control, full ownership, and 100% of the royalties, but the downside is small sales, low visibility to target audiences,
But when some dudes or dudettes in somewhere like Chile or Seattle are downloading your music with virtually no promotion behind it, it's the best feeling in the world, and then theres the
.0039 of a dollar to collect too. KA CHING. It's a riddle, wrapped in an enigma that's locked in a conundrum.
It's a bit ironic though
I mean the black keys came out wanting to be on every format and genre, so they made sure they had tunes that could be played on every station.
The long pause to describe how the chair is squeaking 🤣🤣
This is like a Rick Beato video waiting to happen. This guy is absolutely right. Screw Warner Bros/WMG. Makes me want to do something about their gobbling up the rights to all the great classic rock artists, and then coming down on music-related RUclips channels like the Blue-haired Lawyer when they play ten seconds of that artist's song in their video. Bands like The Grateful Dead should never belong to a conglomerate!
Justin you looked blazed during this I love it
Thank you Justin. That was a great video. I am very passionate about truly good music and I need the best songwriters to be able to do what they do
Now how often to we see THAT. Love the squeaky chair outtake
I just discovered this channel after being a long time TD fan…. Justin, love your meanderings about all things in the music business. I definitely didn’t catch that with your on stage persona. Can’t wait to see you in April in Atlanta. I’ll buy you a Coke (coca-cola)!
Just saw Portland show, it was amaze balls
Thanks for the heads up about Powerage… a delight I had never tasted… keep up the good work rock and roll needs all its disciples
Thank you. Just... thank you!
I totally love this type of musical form. Black Keys, White Stripes, Immortal Lee County Killers, all kinds of bands described as punk blues, not necessarily two-person. My favorite band of all time is The Gun Club, so underappreciated which is a shame.
great seeing you help out the old timers on Rock til we drop.
Always thought you’d be a better fit fronting Queen than the guy they have now, cheers
that beginning was some surreal thing. maybe molly? I wish.. can we have some? maybe...
Bowie even stated, he had to produce hits so who can do what he truly was passionate about.
“Unoiled mouse”…love this man!❤
I love the fit of giggles..we have all done it and the more you try to stifle it the worse it gets..Its contagious too.. :D
Hi there J,
On the intro you sing an E on a Em7 chord.
Did you come up with the melody first?
I'm asking cos I'd expect a 3rd, 5th or 7th, but never such a "contradiction".
Thank you and much love ❤️
Intro is FN brilliant!
Your laugh at the beginning was really contagious :D
Excellent segment 🤔
Keep up the good work Justin 👍🏻
Thanks! 👍
Black Keys are brilliant and so right about this
Thanks for sharing this.
One of your best so far.
Best intro yet, my guy.
Do a video on Poets Of The Fall pleaseeeee. Either of two songs: Carnival Of Rust or Requiem of my Harlequin
Whitestripes and the Black Keys helped me kick the new music sucks mindset. Although a lot of it does, there is a lot good stuff too. I also suggest Reignwolf, Blue Stones, Black Pistol Fire
I just got vinyl for Permission to Land (it looks brand new) and Motorheart, hope that helps up the charts a bit
I’ve written songs but ain’t gotta clue how to .... publish it?
Justin you are thinking of Aston Martin where they had to make a tiny car I believe it was called the Cygnet to offset their carbon emissions.
Justin Hawkins favourite black keys album is magic potion! A very classic rock choice
Hey Justin, could you do a video about the current state of music ticket prices? Love the Rolling Stones but ‘golden circle standing’ tickets were £188
I love your voice - and your sense of style.
Looking forward to the episode on fugazi then
I really hope "unoiled mice in a cheese pipe" is a line in the next Darkness single!
I streamed Heart Explodes 250 times per week since release
You could do a ‘Great American Songbook’/Crooners LP under the artist name of ‘Justin Hawkins & The Cheesepipes. I’d buy that.
Loved this intro, Giggles.
You the best, JH.
As a member of a band on a small label - it's very hard to make money and a lot is geared around streams
My chair is squeaking like a well hung buck field mouse on the hunt for a mate.
There you go Juzzy… simples🤘🎸
