I've been eating a generic version of this dish all my life. So in order to correct and rest my soul, I ordered every single ingredient on the list and made this 15 min ago. I think I spent around 50 dolars in total for everything (of course, most of it lasts for a lifetime). I'll tell you this... my palate was overwhelmed - in a good way - by a sh*it-ton of different sensations when I tried it. The taste is amazing, and the black fermented beans, which at first were offputting to me, made all the difference. A-mazing. I also gave my brother a sichuan peppercorn for him to chew, and he thought he was having an alergic reaction. He tried to drink water, and kept drooling everywhere. Recommend 10 out of 10, for the taste and for sh*ts and giggles.

There are two Chinese dishes that I will never get tired of eating, that I can literally eat everyday; mapo tofu and suan cai yu. Eating these dishes feels like I'm in heaven 😁.

Thank you for this recipe! I recommend using Soft tofu versus Silken tofu. I find that Silken tofu falls apart too easily. For those who aren’t familiar, the softness/firmness fresh tofu spectrum is as follows: Silken, Soft, Medium, Firm, Extra Firm. Fried and dried tofus are excluded from the spectrum.

Sichuan “spiciness” is all about balance, flavor, and fragrance not just spiciness. You’ll be surprised at how mild it can be lol also sichuan peppercorn’s numbing sensation actually cuts through the chili’s spiciness really well
I'm so used to seeing you eating other people's food that I forgot you also know how to cook yourself. Mapo tofu is a fav of mine. Glad you're still making content despite everything.
I love Food Wars cant wait for to return in 2 weeks . I made this dish myself after watching and you are right Mikey its addicting. Although i had to omit the peppercorns because i cant eat spicy foods
