I really, really wish we had Howard's ending, even if it was just a concept of an ending from a draft... in addition to what you pointed out, it just ended so abruptly.
Loved this story. Feel like it deserves more attention. I don't think it'll ever happen, but I'd love to see an adaptation of this. The action scenes were particularly cool

Thank you for re-introducing me to this story. The only other time I came across Almuric was in the pages of Marvel’s Epic Magazine. I couldn’t remember the name of the story or the character, but when you read some of the book out the penny dropped. Got my lovely wife to buy me this for Christmas, along with host of titles recommended by you. Keep the videos coming Michael, they are excellent 😊

“By Thak, are you a man or a woman?” My answer was a smash of my clenched fist that sent him rolling on the sward. "
I laughed so hard on this part 😅

Great assessment of Robert E. Howard's only sci-fi novel, Almuric. Did it do well in England when it was published over there?
It's probable that Howard would've kept the theme of barbarism in Almuric, had he lived to complete it. Who can say for sure? I must get a copy & read it. 🗡🗡🗡🗡🗡🇬🇧🇺🇸🤓

I just re-read Almuric, in English for the first time. Having read it in its original English, I could tell someone else had taken the reins at end, maybe for the whole of the last chapter. And yeah, had Howard lived for longer, he might have finished the story and fleshed it out some more. But even as it is, it's an enjoyable romp!

Esau, the name of the eldest son of Isaac in the Book of Genesis, is pronounced "EE-saw".

The name "Iron Hand" might be a reference to a Frankish mercenary that fought the Saracens on behalf of the Eastern Roman Empire who went by the name of "Iron Arm". Considering REH was deeply fascinated in history.

Sounds fun - certainly not trash. :)
Do you think Howard was just a couple pages from the end, or did Farnsworth just hastily wrap it up? I wonder why REH would stop so close and not finish, unless he was unsure how to end it. At any rate, that ending seems to reject Howard's usual freedom of barbarism, mistrust of civilization philosophy. Maybe someone else out there can do/has done more suitable ending.

    • @michaelk.vaughan8617

I suspect Howard just gave up close to the end because he saw the possibility of British publication dry up. I doubt Wright would have just scrapped an ending written by Howard. But a lot of things about this story remain mysterious.

@@michaelk.vaughan8617 Yeah, but the way Howard got so involved in his writing, dramatically narrating as he goes, I'd think it would be more satisfying to finish regardless of publication. IDK, I'm not a tormented genius.

Unfortunately, Epic magazine (Marvel’s imitation of Heavy Metal magazine) did a serialized comic of this story (at which time I didn’t know was written by REH), and I really didn’t like the artwork at all. That poisoned the story in my mind so much that, even now knowing it’s a REH story, I just have no interest in reading it. My fear is that I’ll constantly be visualizing the unattractive (in my opinion) artwork and won’t be able to enjoy the reading experience. I really should just give it a chance.

I actually liked that adaptation. That said, I pictured the story quite differently in my mind.

    • @FrankGrauJr

@@michaelk.vaughan8617 Well, I can’t honestly say I didn’t like the adaptation storywise, because I never finished reading it since the art style wasn’t to my taste. I don’t recall the artist, but recollecting back on it, the art seems to have looked a lot like Tim Conrad’s art on the Wandering Star Worms of the Earth comic adaptation, which I liked a lot. Even on that, I didn’t personally care for the art style, but it fit really well capturing the vibe of the story, so I overlooked any personal feeling about the art. I’m usually just persnickety about the art that accompanies stories is all.

There are excellent illustrations from Weird Tales. should be sufficient to wash that away
