Rest In Peace Jeff Beck and Lisa Marie Presley. 2023 isn’t starting out very well. Jeff is truly unprecedented. He’s a very unique player. All of the greats have something that makes them stand out from everyone else. The world lost an impeccable talent. A wife lost a wonderful husband. His friends lost a loyal friend. He will be missed.
Don’t mention Beck with the Kings daughter. Disrespectful to Beck. She did nothing except burn up the tabloids with failed marriages and drug abuse etc. if she wasn’t the Kings daughter she would be just another loser at life

Besides his phenomenal guitar playing. Jeff Beck became to rock what Miles Davis was to jazz , and John Mayall was to the British blues scene. Many young and future stars went through their bands as a proving ground for future bands. He was more then a legend, and innovative guitar virtuoso. He was a great band leader who gave a lot of young musicians a chance to stretch out and find there own voice in music. Thanks Fil. Peace.
I am a long time fan of Jeff Beck. I was fortunate to see him a few times live , most recently with Johnny Depp. Jeff lived such a healthy lifestyle & he looked so great that his death was shocking & heartbreaking to me. While I love listening to the guitar I can't play so I appreciate your videos. I have a better understanding of how Jeff made his unique sound. What a huge loss for his family, friends & fans. Agree completely! Fil does a great job trying to explain Beck's vibrato in comparing it to a human voice. Guitar vibrato bends up in pitch only (because the string is tightened). Wammy bars typically bend down but Jeff rigged his to bend UP and DOWN, so the fluctuation between highs and lows are more natural - like a human voice! Genius! Then he took the whole innovation to another level with beautiful songs like Where Were You and Two Rivers, and on and on...I enjoy watching both of his hands when he plays. I love that you can appreciate him as a non-guitarist, maybe he'll inspire you to play one day. I've been playing on and off for 30 years and learned lots of Beck riffs but there is no way I am even 1-2% as good as him. However, it has helped me be a better all around guitar player and develop my own style and expression knowing what the guitar is capable of. Sadly, I never got to see him live...kudos to you for that.
I saw a lot of articles referring to Jeff Beck as a virtuoso after his passing, and he was, but he was more than that. He was a true innovator on the guitar, like Hendrix in that way IMO. One of the things that was so cool about Jeff Beck was that he was so imaginative on the guitar, and so absolutely fearless in exploring that imagination. Like you say Fil, he didn't have one sound that he kept through his career like a lot of guitarists, and that is pretty bold. He wasn't afraid to push the envelope. I appreciate this analysis and breaking down some of the subtleties in what he does. We are very fortunate to have lots of videos of his greatness to be able to watch, and I find that with Jeff Beck, maybe more than any other guitarist, I want to see what the heck it is that he's doing to get the sound he does, so that is a great thing.
He never hits a bad note. Swelling the volume button while using the whammy bar, unlike anyone else. I expected years more of incredible playing. His death was so unexpected.
I guess at his peek Peter Green never touched the volume knob while using the whammy bar....... That’s because he didn’t need a whammy bar until drugs took his skills into a downhill slide. But Peter Green did the same with his fingers on the strings , constantly changing pickups and fiddling with all the volume and tone knobs. He often altered the tone knob to increase volume..... that I don’t understand, but enjoyed listening to . lol
@@Rassskle Peter Green was no Jeff Beck. Neither were Page or Clapton. And Clapton always played it safe, which is why he's mediocre and has been repeating himself for his entire career.
@@Rassskle These guys have an inborn talent where they intuitively know what to do the sound they are looking for. Beck could play a piece of music, just holding a single note and minute movements of the whammy bar. He might be moving it a thousandth of a cm and get the note he wanted. People are so impressed with playing fast. What Beck, Green, Tommy Emmanuel didn’t shred. Yet what they did was so much more difficult.

Even John Mayall sacked Clapton at his peak because he wanted Peter Green...... would have been brilliant to hear Clapton playing rhythm to Greens lead. It is true that Peter Green is no Jeff Beck, just as Beck is NO Green. They both did their own thing there own way....... but had the same skills and produced the same audible tricks. The biggest difference was Peter Greens unmatched tone, something Beck either didn’t want , or couldn’t match....... we will never know the truth there. The other difference was Beck used a whammy bar and maybe distortion peddles on the floor ( I hope not ). Peter Green prior to 1971 never used a whammy bar or any floor peddles. Was all in his fingers, control and wrist.
I saw Jeff live this past October here in NY. Mind you I grew up with Live at Ronnie Scott’s as the gold standard for great guitar playing. He was literally a childhood hero of mine. Almost 20 years after that Ronnie Scott’s show was filmed as I sat watching him live, he played with the exact same level of energy, creativity and imagination. When he played “‘Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers,” my jaw literally dropped. It was the absolute best i had EVER heard that song played, and I was witnessing it right in front of me in person. I was so gutted and shellshocked to hear about his death. I didn’t believe it at first. A huge part of my life is gone now.
If there was a tribute concert honouring Jeff Beck, it would be difficult to do, because Jeff Beck has such a unique guitar style. When I listen to Jeff Beck, every single note he plays has such an emotional quality to it. I can see why Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page had admiration for Jeff Beck. His playing in The Yardbirds was what took the band to the next level. Anything Jeff Beck did, musically, was incredible. Cheers, Fil! ✌️

I still haven’t recovered from Christine McVie’s passing... and now, Jeff Beck. I’m old enough to have loved their music from the beginning of their careers. I’m still so upset about Jeff Beck, we’ve truly lost a legend. I didn’t know him personally but he felt like a friend, his music has helped me so much over the years through some hard times. I’m devastated we’re never going to hear anything again from this very humble and talented man. RIP Jeff
Nice tribute to Jeff Beck. Sad to hear of his passing. He is considered one of the top guitarists in the world. He spanned all genres & styles ranging from blues rock, hard rock to jazz fusion. I remember him back with The Yardbirds & The Jeff Beck Group in the 60's-70's.

There's no way to overstate what a legendary, innovative, artistic master of the guitar Jeff Beck was. I feel so lucky to have seen him play in person, and I'm still awestruck. I twice had the privilege of seeing Jeff Beck perform in person. The first was in the 1970s in Buffalo, N.Y. when he shared the bill with John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The second time was in the 1990s at Darien Lake, N.Y. along with Carlos Santana. Jeff Beck was magnificent both times. There is absolutely no one who will be able to replace him.
I watched a RUclips short the day before he passed,it showed a young Jeff discussing his pedals amd I thought to my self "I can't believe he's still going strong "😢😢😢😢 The next day my soul evaporated

Fil, Thanks for this video here, if someone did not like Jeff"s Guitar work they need to have their ears Inspected, He was the Django Reinhardt from a Different Mother, I first saw him when i was 16 years old in Detroit, The Truth album, he gave a unknown singer a start, Rod Stewart, He always invited new people onstage with him to Play, over the years, you know all of them, this last tour with Johnny Depp and the album was just Awesome, they kicked Royal Ass Man, The last time i saw Jeff was in Albuquerque New Mexico, with SRV, 5 months before the Helicopter crash, At the end of the show, they both came onstage and played 4 Yardbirds songs, I had a dream about that last night, i got to Relive it again, Now they are in Rock & Roll Heaven playing together again, Cousin Figel

Loud Hailer is one of my favorite Jeff Beck albums. On top of the music, I discovered artists I probably never would have otherwise. Funny how he did that so often. Thanks for posting this about Jeff Beck. Jeff is my all time favorite guitarist and I was lucky to work with him a couple of times when he had the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Woods. I’ve seen him play a bunch of times since. There is no other like him IMHO and I, like many, am truly heartbroken and devastated. 😞

Thank you for this excellent tribute and exploration of Jeff's remarkable abilities. This loss is going to be tough to process, Jeff was still touring and playing at the height of his abilities unlike his peers who have plateaued years ago, stagnated, and declined. Jeff's move to finger picking was brilliant, freeing up his hand and fingers to operate the tremelo and volume knob together while still playing. Plus the added level of control it gave him to attack the strings. But beyond his considerable technique was his melodic sense that he was able to transfer at will through his fingers and hands. He would have been legendary just for his ability to use the whammy bar to create melodies when the vast majority of guitarists simply generate a few changes in pitch or wobbles. Using the tremelo to substitute for bending gave him greater control as without the fatigue of constantly bending on the fretboard.
Wonderfully put! Besides his formidable and storied prowess on the guitar he never stopped improving and reaching new heights. The creative fire that was in him continued to burn bright which will always be testament to his dedication to music. Jeff Beck and his otherworldly realm will continue to be an inspiration to the everyone-RIP.
Jeff Beck is a monumental loss in the music world. I can't stress that enough. It's like you said Fil, you think heroes of Beck's magnitude will always be with us, despite Jeff's age, and so it's a blow and a shock when you hear about the death of someone like Jeff Beck. Played Mama Said for my grandkids and they were stunned. Radio doesn't play near the truly talented artists out there. College radio does better but Mr Beck has been a hidden treasure in recent days.

Hearing how Jeff played again just makes me emotional. He left so much silence between notes and runs. I think it helped people, like me, really enjoy an emotional link to the song. So secure in his playing. The guitar was just the end of his fingertips, it seemed. So unique, so good, so missed.

My life changed and my whole musical world became more alive when I decided to rent Blow By Blow from my local CD library back in 1988 . Then I bought Wired and those two albums became two of my favourite ever albums. RIP Jeff

Thanks for this FIL. My very 1st concert was The YARDBIRDS featuring Jeff Beck , with their new 2nd guitarist , Jimmy Page. Saw him with Rod Stewart/ Ron Wood/ Micky Waller. And then maybe six more times in the 70s ( with Cozy Powell , Max Middleton,Jan Hammer Group and others). IMHO he was at the top of a very large group of monumental talent. His music will now be appreciated by millions more. Best Wishes.

I was sorry to hear about Jeff Beck. He's a very esoteric guitar player. He chose his own mountain. He chose his own path. A path that few guitar players could follow at a pace that was difficult to match. I'm probably going to listen to him now more than ever. I can never appreciate him fully because in a way he is an acquired taste. I was never hungry for his sound. No question about it he is one of the great guitar players. Rock and roll is a theatrical production. Jeff definitely gets your attention and he asks you to listen. Godspeed.

Thanks for talking about Jeff, mate. I knew you would. One of my heroes for decades. Better with his instrument than all of his peers. An alien and genius. I got to see him from the 3rd row on the Guitar Shop tour. Everyone's jaws were dropped. Steven Ray Vaughn should have played first. Everyone needed a rest after Beck, and with Terry Bozio to boot.
Thank you for this and also for using a clip with Bones, who Jeff loved because they - typically just voice, guitar and drums - reminded him of the sonic rawness and r 'n' b roots of his time with the Yardbirds. There is no overstating Jeff's abilities and importance. Sadly, too much of the music-listening world missed out and much of his finest work has largely been unheard, like the stunning 'Final Peace', the two sublime solos in 'Seasons', the romping remake of 'Rolling & Tumbling', the pseudo salacious 'Dirty Mind', the swaggering swing of 'Hammerhead' and evocative emotion of 'Nessum Dorma'.... His ability to tap into any style and bring to it his own unique voice without compromising the legitimacy of the music was another key quality. And what a fabulous guest was was on record or stage with the likes of Pavarotti, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, John McLaughlin, Pete Townshend, the Stones, Joss Stone, Robert Plant, Brian Wilson, Nitin Sawhney, the Big Town Playboys.... From opera, to EDM, to the blues, funk, fusion, country, rockabilly, hard rock and heavy metal...he could do anything and always deliver the inspired energy and shape-shifting sound like Jeff Beck. He was truly a master of his instrument. Every performance was a "painting" with sound, matched perfectly to the sounds created by his accompanying musicians, and especially the vocalist. I am not a musician, so I really appreciate your insight into what is going on here, because it aids me in appreciating the performance even more. The delicate nuances of these performances really make me think of a masterful painter creating an image on canvas, only in this case it is a master artist "painting" a picture in sound while exploring the nearly infinite potential of his instrument. These performances are like reading a great book for the second or third time and discovering new beauty within the words. I have heard some of Jeff Beck's performances dozens of times and never tire of them because they always sound fresh as I perceive subtle sounds I did not catch before. I will NEVER get tired of listening to "Beck's Bolero," for example.
Was freshmen in high school 1975, when Blow By Blow was released. It was played to pieces and is forever a part of my musical DNA. Jeff Beck was such a unique and profound talent. Was so brilliant just massaging melody and injecting endless tension and release, producing such dynamic, full sound coming from some magical electronic ether. Genius, the real deal, and a sweet humble guy as well. Huge loss, this one hurts. Interesting, thoughtful analysis as always.

Saw him in Birmingham, UK 1981, brilliant singing by the crowd. I sing more like our cats so I hum. However, I used to go to discos quite a bit and the number of times Jeff's Hi Ho Silver Lining was used as the last song was in the majority. RIP Jeff thanks for the music.
Your description of JB’s talent and innovative approach is so very special. I’ve listened to his music for years and was saddened by his passing. But when I read the write-ups and obituaries over the past few days, they were all filled with cliches and clearly the writers new little about him and less about the guitar. Fil, your introductory remarks completely echoed my own feelings about Jeff and his untimely passing. It just doesn't seem possible that he has left us. Condolences to his widow and all others who loved him.
Had a buddy in high school who had an 8 track in his car and he turned me on to many great artists. We would drive around listening to music smoking pot. 1969 or 70 he popped a tape in and he said you have to listen to this guy. Rod Stewart was lead singer and I think it was called The Jeff Beck group but the guitar playing caught my attention. Very impressed all though I knew he was great he definitely had his own sound. Driving around in a blizzard in Minnesota in 1969 toking up and wow. First , I thought my buddy did it again another band I’d never heard of an second we were young idiots as we got stuck on a back road and luckily we’re in walking distance of another friend who lived in the country. People died in that storm. We definitely had a lot to learn but what a memory. 53 years ago. And Jeff Beck how privileged we were to have the music they now call classic. Oh yeah

I saw him twelve times throughout my life, and have just been transported by him every time to that sublime realm of music that is such a gift. Fantastic episode. I’ve enjoyed JB’s music for years, but your detailed look at what made him so special really adds to my appreciation. I just saw a version of “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” by Tommy Emanuel on acoustic in concert and was amazed at both Tommy’s playing and his respect for Jeff.
I got to see Mr. Beck at his first show after being inducted into the RRHoF the second time as a solo artist & I’m so glad I did. All of the greats have something that makes them stand out from everyone else. The world lost an impeccable talent. A wife lost a wonderful husband. His friends lost a loyal friend. He will be missed.

Besides his phenomenal guitar playing. Jeff Beck became to rock what Miles Davis was to jazz , and John Mayall was to the British blues scene. Many young and future stars went through their bands as a proving ground for future bands. He was more then a legend, and innovative guitar virtuoso. He was a great band leader who gave a lot of young musicians a chance to stretch out and find there own voice in music. Thanks Fil. Peace.

I was fortunate to see him a few times live , most recently with Johnny Depp. Jeff lived such a healthy lifestyle & he looked so great that his death was shocking & heartbreaking to me. While I love listening to the guitar I can't play so I appreciate your videos. I have a better understanding of how Jeff made his unique sound. What a huge loss for his family, friends & fans. Agree completely! Fil does a great job trying to explain Beck's vibrato in comparing it to a human voice. Guitar vibrato bends up in pitch only (because the string is tightened). Wammy bars typically bend down but Jeff rigged his to bend UP and DOWN, so the fluctuation between highs and lows are more natural - like a human voice! Genius! Then he took the whole innovation to another level with beautiful songs like Where Were You and Two Rivers, and on and on...I enjoy watching both of his hands when he plays. I love that you can appreciate him as a non-guitarist, maybe he'll inspire you to play one day. I've been playing on and off for 30 years and learned lots of Beck riffs but there is no way I am even 1-2% as good as him. However, it has helped me be a better all around guitar player and develop my own style and expression knowing what the guitar is capable of. Sadly, I never got to see him live...kudos to you for that.

I saw a lot of articles referring to Jeff Beck as a virtuoso after his passing, and he was, but he was more than that. He was a true innovator on the guitar, like Hendrix in that way IMO. One of the things that was so cool about Jeff Beck was that he was so imaginative on the guitar, and so absolutely fearless in exploring that imagination. Like you say Fil, he didn't have one sound that he kept through his career like a lot of guitarists, and that is pretty bold. He wasn't afraid to push the envelope. I appreciate this analysis and breaking down some of the subtleties in what he does. We are very fortunate to have lots of videos of his greatness to be able to watch, and I find that with Jeff Beck, maybe more than any other guitarist, I want to see what the heck it is that he's doing to get the sound he does, so that is a great thing.

He never hits a bad note. Swelling the volume button while using the whammy bar, unlike anyone else. I expected years more of incredible playing. His death was so unexpected.
I guess at his peek Peter Green never touched the volume knob while using the whammy bar.......
That’s because he didn’t need a whammy bar until drugs took his skills into a downhill slide.
But Peter Green did the same with his fingers on the strings , constantly changing pickups and fiddling with all the volume and tone knobs.
He often altered the tone knob to increase volume..... that I don’t understand, but enjoyed listening to . lol

Beck could play a piece of music, just holding a single note and minute movements of the whammy bar. He might be moving it a thousandth of a cm and get the note he wanted. People are so impressed with playing fast. What Beck, Green, Tommy Emmanuel didn’t shred. Yet what they did was so much more difficult.

Even John Mayall sacked Clapton at his peak because he wanted Peter Green...... would have been brilliant to hear Clapton playing rhythm to Greens lead.
It is true that Peter Green is no Jeff Beck, just as Beck is NO Green.
They both did their own thing there own way....... but had the same skills and produced the same audible tricks.
The biggest difference was Peter Greens unmatched tone, something Beck either didn’t want , or couldn’t match....... we will never know the truth there.
The other difference was Beck used a whammy bar and maybe distortion peddles on the floor ( I hope not ).
Peter Green prior to 1971 never used a whammy bar or any floor peddles.
Was all in his fingers, control and wrist.
I saw Jeff live this past October here in NY. Mind you I grew up with Live at Ronnie Scott’s as the gold standard for great guitar playing. He was literally a childhood hero of mine. Almost 20 years after that Ronnie Scott’s show was filmed as I sat watching him live, he played with the exact same level of energy, creativity and imagination. When he played “‘Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers,” my jaw literally dropped. It was the absolute best i had EVER heard that song played, and I was witnessing it right in front of me in person.
I was so gutted and shellshocked to hear about his death. I didn’t believe it at first. A huge part of my life is gone now.

If there was a tribute concert honouring Jeff Beck, it would be difficult to do, because Jeff Beck has such a unique guitar style. When I listen to Jeff Beck, every single note he plays has such an emotional quality to it. I can see why Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page had admiration for Jeff Beck. His playing in The Yardbirds was what took the band to the next level. Anything Jeff Beck did, musically, was incredible. Cheers, Fil! ✌️

I’m still so upset about Jeff Beck, we’ve truly lost a legend. I didn’t know him personally but he felt like a friend, his music has helped me so much over the years through some hard times. I’m devastated we’re never going to hear anything again from this very humble and talented man. RIP Jeff
Nice tribute to Jeff Beck. Sad to hear of his passing. He is considered one of the top guitarists in the world. He spanned all genres & styles ranging from blues rock, hard rock to jazz fusion. I remember him back with The Yardbirds & The Jeff Beck Group in the 60's-70's.

I twice had the privilege of seeing Jeff Beck perform in person. The first was in the 1970s in Buffalo, N.Y. when he shared the bill with John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The second time was in the 1990s at Darien Lake, N.Y. along with Carlos Santana. Jeff Beck was magnificent both times. There is absolutely no one who will be able to replace him.

Fil, Thanks for this video here, if someone did not like Jeff"s Guitar work they need to have their ears Inspected, He was the Django Reinhardt from a Different Mother, I first saw him when i was 16 years old in Detroit, The Truth album, he gave a unknown singer a start, Rod Stewart, He always invited new people onstage with him to Play, over the years, you know all of them, this last tour with Johnny Depp and the album was just Awesome, they kicked Royal Ass Man, The last time i saw Jeff was in Albuquerque New Mexico, with SRV, 5 months before the Helicopter crash, At the end of the show, they both came onstage and played 4 Yardbirds songs, I had a dream about that last night, i got to Relive it again, Now they are in Rock & Roll Heaven playing together again, Cousin Figel

Thanks for posting this about Jeff Beck. Jeff is my all time favorite guitarist and I was lucky to work with him a couple of times when he had the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Woods. I’ve seen him play a bunch of times since. There is no other like him IMHO and I, like many, am truly heartbroken and devastated. 😞

Thank you for this excellent tribute and exploration of Jeff's remarkable abilities. This loss is going to be tough to process, Jeff was still touring and playing at the height of his abilities unlike his peers who have plateaued years ago, stagnated, and declined. Jeff's move to finger picking was brilliant, freeing up his hand and fingers to operate the tremelo and volume knob together while still playing. Plus the added level of control it gave him to attack the strings. But beyond his considerable technique was his melodic sense that he was able to transfer at will through his fingers and hands. He would have been legendary just for his ability to use the whammy bar to create melodies when the vast majority of guitarists simply generate a few changes in pitch or wobbles. Using the tremelo to substitute for bending gave him greater control as without the fatigue of constantly bending on the fretboard.
Wonderfully put! Besides his formidable and storied prowess on the guitar he never stopped improving and reaching new heights. The creative fire that was in him continued to burn bright which will always be testament to his dedication to music. Jeff Beck and his otherworldly realm will continue to be an inspiration to the everyone-RIP.
Jeff Beck is a monumental loss in the music world. I can't stress that enough. It's like you said Fil, you think heroes of Beck's magnitude will always be with us, despite Jeff's age, and so it's a blow and a shock when you hear about the death of someone like Jeff Beck. Hearing how Jeff played again just makes me emotional. He left so much silence between notes and runs. I think it helped people, like me, really enjoy an emotional link to the song. So secure in his playing. The guitar was just the end of his fingertips, it seemed. So unique, so good, so missed.

Thanks for this FIL. My very 1st concert was The YARDBIRDS featuring Jeff Beck , with their new 2nd guitarist , Jimmy Page. Saw him with Rod Stewart/ Ron Wood/ Micky Waller. And then maybe six more times in the 70s ( with Cozy Powell , Max Middleton,Jan
Hammer Group and others). IMHO he was at the top of a very large group of monumental talent. His music will now be appreciated by millions more. Best Wishes.

He's a very esoteric guitar player.
He chose his own mountain.
He chose his own path.
A path that few guitar players could follow at a pace that was difficult to match. I'm probably going to listen to him now more than ever. I can never appreciate him fully because in a way he is an acquired taste. I was never hungry for his sound. No question about it he is one of the great guitar players. Rock and roll is a theatrical production. Jeff definitely gets your attention and he asks you to listen. Godspeed.

Great analysis Fil. His death is such a loss but of course the music lives on. Haven’t seen an analysis that demonstrates such a close appreciation of the techniques he used. Great stuff but what a pity he’s gone as, and many have said this, he was still on top of his game.

Thanks for talking about Jeff, mate. I knew you would. One of my heroes for decades. Better with his instrument than all of his peers. An alien and genius. I got to see him from the 3rd row on the Guitar Shop tour. Everyone's jaws were dropped. Steven Ray Vaughn should have played first. Everyone needed a rest after Beck, and with Terry Bozio to boot.

Sadly, too much of the music-listening world missed out and much of his finest work has largely been unheard, like the stunning 'Final Peace', the two sublime solos in 'Seasons', the romping remake of 'Rolling & Tumbling', the pseudo salacious 'Dirty Mind', the swaggering swing of 'Hammerhead' and evocative emotion of 'Nessum Dorma'.... His ability to tap into any style and bring to it his own unique voice without compromising the legitimacy of the music was another key quality. And what a fabulous guest was was on record or stage with the likes of Pavarotti, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, John McLaughlin, Pete Townshend, the Stones, Joss Stone, Robert Plant, Brian Wilson, Nitin Sawhney, the Big Town Playboys.... From opera, to EDM, to the blues, funk, fusion, country, rockabilly, hard rock and heavy metal...he could do anything and always deliver the inspired energy and shape-shifting sound like Jeff Beck.

He was truly a master of his instrument. Every performance was a "painting" with sound, matched perfectly to the sounds created by his accompanying musicians, and especially the vocalist. I am not a musician, so I really appreciate your insight into what is going on here, because it aids me in appreciating the performance even more. The delicate nuances of these performances really make me think of a masterful painter creating an image on canvas, only in this case it is a master artist "painting" a picture in sound while exploring the nearly infinite potential of his instrument. These performances are like reading a great book for the second or third time and discovering new beauty within the words. I have heard some of Jeff Beck's performances dozens of times and never tire of them because they always sound fresh as I perceive subtle sounds I did not catch before. I will NEVER get tired of listening to "Beck's Bolero," for example.
He used his hands to paint and sculpt the music.

Was freshmen in high school 1975, when Blow By Blow was released. It was played to pieces and is forever a part of my musical DNA. Jeff Beck was such a unique and profound talent. Was so brilliant just massaging melody and injecting endless tension and release, producing such dynamic, full sound coming from some magical electronic ether. Genius, the real deal, and a sweet humble guy as well. Huge loss, this one hurts.

Saw him in Birmingham, UK 1981, brilliant singing by the crowd. I sing more like our cats so I hum. However, I used to go to discos quite a bit and the number of times Jeff's Hi Ho Silver Lining was used as the last song was in the majority. RIP Jeff thanks for the music.
Your description of JB’s talent and innovative approach is so very special. I’ve listened to his music for years and was saddened by his passing. But when I read the write-ups and obituaries over the past few days, they were all filled with cliches and clearly the writers new little about him and less about the guitar. Thank you for getting it right.

Fil, your introductory remarks completely echoed my own feelings about Jeff and his untimely passing. It just doesn't seem possible that he has left us. Condolences to his widow and all others who loved him.

Had a buddy in high school who had an 8 track in his car and he turned me on to many great artists. We would drive around listening to music smoking pot. 1969 or 70 he popped a tape in and he said you have to listen to this guy. Rod Stewart was lead singer and I think it was called The Jeff Beck group but the guitar playing caught my attention. Very impressed all though I knew he was great he definitely had his own sound. Driving around in a blizzard in Minnesota in 1969 toking up and wow. First , I thought my buddy did it again another band I’d never heard of an second we were young idiots as we got stuck on a back road and luckily we’re in walking distance of another friend who lived in the country. People died in that storm. We definitely had a lot to learn but what a memory. 53 years ago. And Jeff Beck how privileged we were to have the music they now call classic. Oh yeah

Fantastic episode. I’ve enjoyed JB’s music for years, but your detailed look at what made him so special really adds to my appreciation. I just saw a version of “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” by Tommy Emanuel on acoustic in concert and was amazed at both Tommy’s playing and his respect for Jeff.
I got to see Mr. Beck at his first show after being inducted into the RRHoF the second time as a solo artist & I’m so glad I did. He had bassist Tal Wilkenfeld with him & he did a cool thing playing the top portion of the neck of her bass while she did the bass part itself & the very bottom where the neck connects to the body. It was an excellent show. Shalom sir. You will be remembered & very much missed. You were unique & set a standard that will be unmatched for an indefinite amount of time. 🥀
