  • Volcano update from Iceland. June 8, 2024. Only one crater is erupting now. The smaller crater to the north died. Lava moving north west ofthe crater, towards Sylingafell mountain and might push towards the road to Blue Lagoon (road 43). Theere is much less lava in the only erupting crater now if compared with 4 days ago, so activity is subsiding day by day but might keep going for a few more days or even weeks at very low rates. Icelandic volcanologist Thordarsson belives that the eruptive series at Sundhnukur is coming to an end this summer (judging from the declining rate in magma supply from the deeper reservoir). This is likely to be the last eruption at Sundhnukur crater row. However the volcanic activity phase on Reykjanes is to be continued at new location (according to Thordarsson), perhaps in a year or two. Those are good news fro the residents of Grindavik!
5th Volcanic Eruption (8th since 2021) of Reykjanes Volcano started on May 29th, 2024 at 12:50 just north of Grindavik, Reykjanes Peninsula. As for 16:00 May 29th the erupting fissure was 3.4 km long and the lava ran over the road no. 43 (Grindavik road) for the 2nd time in that location (first time back in January) and also over road 425 (Nesvegur) west of town. By the evening of the first day activity subsided and was concentrated along some 2 km stretch, more or less at the same location as back in March, around the old crater. As for today, June 3 we have two distinct cones erupting close distance to each other, emitting lava flows in the opposite directions: the northern cone emits lava to the east, while the southern one (bigger one) sends lava to the west where its facing a mountain (Sylingafell). Southern cone also emits lava to the south via a tube, where we see a lava pool.

The reason that gases have a stronger effect on birds isn't because of small lungs. Its because birds have a much faster metabolism. They burn a lot of energy flying and have to breathe in a proportional amount of oxygen to sustain themselves. That also means that the amount of toxic gases in they inhale and metabolise will be proportionally higher.

Human "intervention" does help if done right, as it was done with the building of those lava barriers. Intervene early, and catastrophes can be averted, as opposed to intervening during active periods. TY Roman for the update.

There are a lot of these old butes in Oregon where I am from as well as in all the western U.S.. They all look to have originally erupted from fissures and become single cones eventually. It's interesting to observe this pattern in a real volcano there in Iceland.

Nature is not random, that is a foolish statement. Just walk around the forests and observe plants, leaves, bucks, seasons of the year etc., movement of sun, planets. Structure, perfection and organization are obvious. One most be really blind not to notice (don't take it as offense:) Regarding exposing lives to danger on that I might agree with you. We should not do that without necessasity. But in this particular case what was the danger? Volcano breaking up? Lava moves like a turtle. Have not heard anybody of 200.000 who visited eruption site in Icelsnd die from lava. One can always walk from lava. Gases, yes can be dangerous but then that depends on the wind direction. So it wasnt as dangerous as some imagine. Otherwise I wouldnt be there. It doesn't mean I advise people visiting erupting volcanoes. Volcanic eruptions can be of various types, even here in Iceland and most are indeed dangerous to be next.

When speaking the word "flowed" pronounce it as one syllable "flow'd", and you'll then be speaking that word as a native speaker. Also the word "considered" is pronounced "consider'd" by native speakers. Not as "consider-ed". Very few verbs that form a past tense using "ed" have "ed" pronounced as a full syllable in its own right. Most of the time the "e" is elided, just pronouncing the consonant. Another example: to "Master" forms the past tense "mastered", but that is pronounced "masterd" (with the "r" also often elided, depending on dialict).
Do this and you'll sound more like a native English speaker. :) "Closed" is also pronounced as "Close'd" (the "e" being silent, but governing the pronunciation of the "o").
