Don't you need to be in AE and exhaust to start on shopping spree? Or is there a work around im missing?

You are right, you have to be in Alter Ego and can't do it with Hero actions like "Multitasking". If you have some AE actions you can prevent the exhaust, e.g. when you have thwarting options like "Disguise" or "Gambits Alter Ego Action".
