While listening to the first part of your podcast, I immediately thought of the story of the teenage West German amateur pilot Mathias Rust who flew a rented Cessna from Finland and landed near Red Square in Moscow in 1987. The flight caused an alarm within the Soviet Air Defense Forces, leading to the dismissal of a senior officer. The exploit earned Rust a four year sentence to a Soviet labor camp, of which he served 14 months before being pardoned.
Howard Foote received an Other Than Honorable Discharge, NOT a Dishonorable Discharge. There is a huge difference. A DD would have precluded him from going to Embry-Riddle University or getting a pilot license later in his life along with several other penalties. An OTHD doesn't carry any of those penalties. Foote was never actually court martialed (which is necessary for a DD), but was punished through Article 15 of the UCMJ.
Miltary justice is a thing apart , they own you , ect . They serve it is enough :. How they got out , evade , scoff : should be kept tightly in context .
My grandfather used to stay wrong way Corrigan every time he or myself got something backwards. I still use that saying to this day even though it's a bit out of time.
In March 1972 I was flying out of the Akron Municipal Airport, Akron,OH to add multi-engine fixed wing aircraft to my commercial pilot's license. My instructor/check airman was Ruby Monsching. She had her training at the airport using her 150 horsepower Piper Apache aircraft. She and her fellow instructor Ruth did all of the training and issued the rating. Ruby had been a WASP during WW-2. I had done something wrong during my time in the left seat and said,"that's probably the way “Wrong Way” Corrigan would have done it." Ruby immediately said, "I flew with him, he was not very nice." She would not add to the story but I understand he worked with the Ferry Command during WW-2. When you consider the problems that the WASP pilots had with men it seems like a real condemnation.
It was around 1930 and by army troops, under the Command of Gen. Douglas McArthur whose chief staff officer was named Dwight Eisenhower. Not highly publicized but done pursuant to the command of higher authority The bonus marchers had been promised the bonus and the Govt. failed to honor its promise.

Those dismissed included Defense Minister Sergei Sokolov and Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Air Defense Forces Chief Marshal Alexander Koldunov.

The conversation at the end reminds me of one I've heard: "He who says it can't be done shouldn't interrupt the one doing it."

For your grandfather, pass it on to your kids. 😇
