After watching maybe 20-30 of your videos, I can clearly see why people really don't like you much. It's the same reason that I'm subscribed. No matter how much salt you season it with,, the truth leaves a really bad taste in the mouths of the most arrogant and prideful hunters that will not admit they are or have been wrong. It's embarrassing, humbling and sometimes even shameful to realize that we've made fundamental mistakes, but there are physical laws that scream out "There is a better way.' But here's the reward: You are helping this of us that really want to be better, more effective hunters, become better, more effective hunters. Your one of the best science teachers I've studied under. I'm taking notes . Thanks Troy

@@ScottWConvid19 I wanna start off saying I love all the RF stuff and even before RUclips ever existed, have always shot similar setups. What I want to say is if we already know it’s hard to admit, humbling and embarrassing, then are we really accomplishing anything by degrading the light arrow shooters? There might be some out there who don’t actually know and the first time they feel made fun of turn it off before learning anything.
Just something to think about. If we really want to change someone’s mind, making them feel like an idiot probably isn’t the best place to start.

Got me some Sirius Ranch Fairy Apollo’s on the way. Cut to length, 4 fletch with 100 grain inserts. Going from Rage flappers to Black Hornet Ser Razors. Good stuff RF - I've been doing this for decades heavy arrows many double arrow inside an arrow to get the weight and always strong steel broadheads - it is great to see some of the long known practices of Big Game Traditional Bowhunters get out to the rest of modern archery. I have taken less than ten quartering Too shots last 30 years but I've never had one fail - ALL hit the dirt Quickly!!

Troy has lead the viewers to water, but that doesn’t mean they will all take a drink 😆
If you are a conscientious ethical hunter, with a decent mechanical aptitude, you will understand Troy’s message. Some will pay attention due to personal experience losing an animal while using a flapper broad head, and are seeking a better solution. Sadly, many animals will be waisted, due to others falling prey to the hunting industry’s mass marketing of flimsy inefficient broad heads. Thanks for your dedication to research and testing RF!

Sounds like your bow has plenty of power but the arrow shafts were crap.

The arrow entered at the mid-point of the neck and exited in front of the opposite side rear hind quarter. The deer ran up the hill away from the swamp and died on the edge of the field 50 yards away where I easily drove my truck to pick it up... bang.... dead. impossible to get double lung on that angle. Would have to centerpunch the heart. Single lung would be a lost deer with a pass through.

  • @deanbalouris330
    @deanbalouris330 Год назад

From Human physiology and experience as a Respiratory Technician, the lungs do as you state have multiple lobes and the critical vessels connect the heart and lungs, exchanging carbon dioxide in the blood from venous circulation, oxygenating in the lungs before being pumped back out to the body as arterial blood. When an arrow or other object passes through the chest cavity, it first pierces the pleura, a sack that surrounds the lungs, enabling them to keep the lungs expanded. When the pleural sack is pierced, the lungs will loose their ability to stay expanded and consequently oxygenate arterial blood. This is important knowledge for hunters, because ANY SHOT THAT PIERCES THE PLEURAL SACK WILL RESULT IN DEATH. It might not come instantly, but when the lungs loose their ability to expand, oxygenation will fail to occur and death will follow. The lungs aren’t two balloons, but rather thousands of tiny balloons that rely on a sealed lung cavity that is pressurized to stay expanded.

I passed the exact same shot as the last shot you showed on that hog animation. Had my target buck at 5 yards quartered too from a stand at full draw with 2 days left in the season. I badly wanted to put the arrow in the crease between the neck and his shoulder but I let him go. Few weeks later he broke off one of his main beams and I have not seen him since. I have been a rage hypodermic shooter since they were made, they have yet to fail me. But you are right, I feel limited. I am going to be building some of my own arrows and cranking some FOC into my set up, I have not decided if I will put the Hypodermics aside or not yet...but what you have shown through your channel is convincing. I think I may have honestly not had enough drag/steerage from the fletchings I was using. I was also using micro diameter arrows and the outserts and collars were a pain to get true. Easy button package are arrows from Sirius made to Troy’s specs. I’m going with the Vulcans cause I’m done with messing with half outs and collars and those shenanigans. A plain 100 grain insert suits my caveman intelligence/mechanical aptitude better.

First season hunting. Got a shot at a nice buck first hunt of the year (early muzzleloader). Buck was perfectly broadside I got some bad advice to not shoot in the v but a little further back. Got good blood but the deer ended up crossing a river (then to get shot by someone else). Hunted about 10 more times without getting a shot. Fast forward to late muzzleloader and I had a doe come up to me quartering to pretty hard, actually stomping at me. Ended up aming for the exit along the opposite front leg and she didn't make it 30 years. Entry looks too far forward in the picture but it was a double lung with a perfect exit.

The sole reason the mass bowhunting public does not go for the ( heavy arrow, high FOC with good fixed blade broadhead) concept is that they are not willing to accept the increased arrow drop - plain and simple.... I get that... It's definitely is something one needs to get used to. Nothing a good range finder can't help you with though. The benefits of a good heavy arrow set up which allows you "shot forward" placement easily TRUMPS the decreased arrow trajectory in my books.

Need to be more confident first as I do not want to leave a wounded dear to bleed out for hours and hours. I have wondered on a quartering to shot, why not punch them in the chest? It was good to see on your pig diagram that it is a logical shot placement, but with so many variables of string jump is it a viable shot in reality?

I figured this out by accident on a public land buck (ground hunt) a few years back. The deer came in quick slight quartering to and I didn't have time to think. It was the last weekend before rifle season and no buck yet so I just reacted and shot my wasp jak-hammer two blade about 35 yards. The buck just trotted off a little after impact then wobbled and dropped in like 3 seconds dead - no kicking around on the ground or anything. I tried to tuck in behind the shoulder but missed badly all the way to the front side of the front leg/shoulder. The arrow was poking out the other side behind the opposite front leg and it was a crime scene of blood. Shooting in front of the front leg to exit behind the opposite front leg is a deadly shot off the ground.

I’m reading a book called “the war bow”. It’s about the medieval long bow used in war. There is limited info about the arrows, however they were using 1400-1800 grain arrows with solid/heavy heads. They knew back then that weight kills. How did we forget?

I've only killed one deer quartering to me and the setup at the time was admittedly marginal. 570 grain total weight but with a mechanical on the front. Near shoulder was back so I tucked it in front, smashed into the offside knuckle, sliced the top of the heart.
I'm going to build a heavy setup with my 59 pound recurve for 2021. Based off previous tunes I'll likely have XX78, way less bendy than XX75, 2317 aluminums full length with 150 or 175 grain points. Total weight 705 to 730 grains. Should be around 180 feet per second of my bow, helped by having an almost 33 inch draw length.

The State of Michigan Parks Department published a review of recovery of WT deer and elk from different shot angles back around 1980-1984. I was the Legislative Chair for the LSBA back then and participated in teaching the NBEF course in archery at Camp Bullis in San Antonio. The aforementioned article’s data for recovery (assuming total recall!) was: broadside-50%; quartering away-80%; quartering towards-20%. The reason broadside wasn’t 100% was because hunters POI was anywhere from head to tail, front to back of the animal... cause bows weren’t as good (only stick and string or 50% let off) & set ups weren’t tuned like they are today. Quartering away to the offside arm pit with the animal’s head down had the highest pass through heart and lung hits and as RF points out quartering towards had the lowest recovery rates for the reasons he states. Broadside shots in elk had higher recovery rates than WT deer and quartering away shots in elk lower recovery rates than WT deer. The chest vital zone is simply larger on an elk with a broadside shot and the guts and rumen filled with vegetation on a quartering away shot often led to entire 30-32” arrows behind found inside the wet grass mat acting like a bow practice target... the arrows never got into the boiler room on the other side of the diaphragm. When I was taught about bowhunting and BHs... the Rothaar Snuffer (175 gr,1,5” cut) was popular. I was told that “if I could find a BH that would cut that animal in half on impact... that’s the one I would shoot!” Bows are more expensive and great set up info is all over the place. Shot selection and placement and the physiology hasn’t changed! Enjoy bowhunting! Great info RF!

We need one of these studies to add 650+’and single bevels as a test group.
They also don’t keep pass throughs vs other “hits”.

First let me say that I shoot longbows only and have for nearly thirty years. I’ve shot most of good two bevel heads about three years ago I changed to to Grizzly 150gr.head and I shoot wood or aluminum arrows in the 480 to 550 gran range out of longbows that or 40 to 45 lbs and get pass throughs. Great stuff on here.

Great info, definitely had passed a shooter buck quartering to at 50yds. I’m shooting roughly a 560gr arrow @70lbs, 28” DL. I didn’t feel comfortable with that angle. It was a little too much quarter to. Love the info, maybe I will have to tinker with a single bezel broad head

Another good example is when Warb from THP shoots an elk full frontal with the Born and Raised guys. That elk goes 50yrds and flops. The arrow does a pass through because it is a “big boy” arrow. Keep on educating RF. The proof is in the kills.

Practicing my stroping technique so relaxing. I'm using a cereal box front on a table. Its actually working but it seems it kinda leveled off on sharpness or I just need to keep going I did it for an hour practicing and its working forsure becuase i did shoot a foam target. Its cutting paper but not as good as it should. I'll eventually get a nice strop but I heard about the cereal box thing and tried it. Wanted to say thanks again this makes it even more special to me get that edge finish just right ✅

It's bone chisel, shoulder wack and crack time. Grizzly single bevel with steel insert, FOC 19 percent is on deck. Have lost single lung hit deer before with lighter arrow set ups and heads too large for the task of making it thru bone to cross thru both lungs. Large broadheads that go in 3 inches and stop mean nothing. This is fixing to get interesting.

Got my arrows upgraded over the summer because of RF. I’m only at 565 grains but have shot an 8 point and a hog this season, neither made it 40 yards after the shot. I’m shooting 3 blade vpa broad head but stepping up to single bevel next season

Shot placement! I Liv in Tennessee now and i have never seen so many posts asking for a guy with a dog to help find deer! Poor shot placement and too many unturned bow arrow setups and probably Walmart arrows! I'm all for a heavier set up and stout heads but as you show in these videos even with the best set up out there if the shot isn't placed well doesn't matter how heavy or well tuned the setup is. You speaking the truth about all this and people giving you crap about just shows how many poor hunters and sportsman are out there!!!!

I understand exactly what you're saying. What I haven't heard you say is, shoot them IN FRONT of the shoulder or right between the front of the shoulder and bottom of the neck. Would that be a heart shot or vital shot also? Seems like it would be easier to penetrate the vitals here instead of trying to go through the bone. Maybe it's a SUPER tough shot for the majority of bowhunters, therefore you don't mention it? Help me understand what I'm not catching, please. Thanks man, and from a beginner's view, you're doing an awesome job, keep it up!! Jerry

    • @RanchFairy

depends on the angle i.e "how quartered to". The heart doesn't move around. So sometimes what you said will be the angle. Sometimes not.

Hi Troy, I’ve always shot 300 spine arrow before I started watching your videos. I don’t weight the front of my arrow heavily like you advocate but I plan on changing that... I have a lot of energy with a 31.5” draw. The last two bucks I killed were on public land in PA and I shot them both through the shoulder/upper leg slightly quartering... only got about 10” of penetration on each but neither one went more than 50 yards
