The Grey parrot, popularly known as the ‘Einstein of the bird world’ is one of the most intelligent companions you can ever find. Grey parrots are one of the smartest birds on the planet. They are also known for their talking abilities.
Grey parrots are native to rainforests of central Africa. In recent years, much research has been done on the mental capacity of these parrots by scientists around the world. The bird has great cognitive skills equivalent to that of a 5 year old human child. They are capable of learning vocabularies of up to 1000 words. They are known to have a long lifespan of up to 80 years.
African greys are among the most popular pet birds in the world. But there is a darker side to it. Hundreds of thousands of these birds are caught and trafficked illegally for pet trade. They form close human-like bonds with their owners. Due to their social nature , it makes them relatively easy to catch. Most of the wild caught birds die during transit. It has now been listed as an endangered bird species.
