- Honestly, there's no better time of the year to make sugar cookies than during the holidays. These light and airy cookies are made with a bit of citrus, which is perfect for winter. And when topped with a royal icing, they're a festive treat!

INGREDIENTS
For the cookies:
- 1 cup butter, room temperature
- 2 oz cream cheese, room temperature
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp almond extract
- 2 tsp orange zest
- 1 1/2 tbsp orange juice
- 3 cups flour
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
For the royal icing:
- 3 oz egg whites (about 3 egg whites)
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla powder (or vanilla extract)
INSTRUCTIONS
For the cookies:
- In an electric mixer, cream the butter and cream cheese until smooth, 1-2 minutes. Add the sugar and cream until light and fluffy, 3-4 minutes. Mix in the egg, orange zest, orange juice, vanilla, and almond extract. Add the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well and scrape the bowl to ensure everything is incorporated.
- Wrap the dough tightly in plastic wrap. Chill for at least 30 minutes or overnight. The dough may also be frozen for up to one month.
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Once well chilled, roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/4- to 1/2-inch thick and cut with desired cookie cutters. Place on parchment-lined baking sheets. Place in the preheated oven and bake until slightly puffed and just beginning to turn golden, 10-14 minutes.
- Once baked, remove from the oven and cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes. Transfer to cooling racks and cool completely. Frost with favorite icing or try royal icing (instructions below).
For the royal icing:
- Mix the egg whites, 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, and vanilla powder together until smooth. Add the remaining 1/2 cup of powdered sugar until the frosting is thick and like a ribbon when pouring out.
- Separate into bowls and color with food coloring.
- Use pastry bags or a plastic cookie decorating bottle to decorate the cookies.

I'm a royal icing cookie decorator and I have a great tip for making that icing not only taste better...but actually be delicious!
2 lbs of powdered sugar
5 TBLS of meringue powder (I like it better than using egg whites)
1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup plus 2 TBLS of warm water
1 tsp of cream of tarter
1 TBLS of clear vanilla extract
It's a total game changer for royal icing! Plus, it's Christmas time, so I'm giving out my own personal recipe!
Merry Christmas!
OH!!! ONE MORE THING!!! (and most importantly!) I just absolutely love you! You're so fun, light, and adorable! I hope your Christmas is as SPECIAL and WONDERFUL as YOU are!! ❤

Okay so I just made the dough, AND THE ORANGE ZEST!!! OMG!! Never knew I needed that citrus bite in a cookie dough, but I'm glad I tried this recipe. She's the star of the show.
You are so right about that! 😆

i'd imagine it'd be so satisfying to see someone really enjoy your cookies with gusto, but not so much as cookie monster where it's all on the floor 😀that's probably too much fun...
Love your copper collection. You should do a video on it (how you've collected, where you purchase, etc.)
I love peppermint candy cane sprinkles!
I wish you were my neighbor! I 😘 love watching your Christmas traditions 🎄 I love cleaning up the kitchen with the German shiney tradition🥰 I really wish there were more people like you in the world. . . I'm doing your magic in my kitchen with my kids 💖
You are a stitch! Love your recipes! I too collect Martha's cookie cutters when they were first released so many moons ago! Haven't used them in years so maybe I will pull them out for my granddaughter to make some cookies!!

You are hilarious!! I am sure Martha *knows* she’s your bestie!!! 😁🤣🎄🎄🎄
OMG...I have a bell cookie cutter EXACTLY like that. I have a Gingerbread Man cookie cutout too made out of tin like those. They were my Grandmothers. She was born in 1896 so she may have bought them in the 30's 40's...no matter...they are old and I LOVE them.
Like always your work is Beautifully done and those cookies look amazing I made some for my grandchildren and great grandchildren but I did the just a little sprinkles and sugar on top but I am going to re-create some for Christmas day and I am going to try with the royal icing and the bottles and your artistic ability Ha ha ha just beautiful thank you so much have a blessed Christmas
I have never used royal icing but I will now! Thank you for showing me !
Oh what fun it is !! you make it look so easy - great helpful hints for those of us who are baking challenged !!! that's for sharing and inspiring us to just get in the kitchen and bake !!
Loved Martha's TV show from the 1980s. I learned so much from her. 😊
Great tutorial, beautiful kitchen and you’re too much fun
Those trees are so cute!!!
My mom always used the sprinkles and silver candy decorations. I think it was to avoid the added mess actually using icing with 5 kids would have made. I wish we would have done this.
You're so fun to watch. Merry Christmas!

I love your cooking and gardening videos. I would love a good gingersnap cookie. I've tried to make them but cannot seem to get a good crisp gingersnap, only soft ones. I wish you would make a video on gingersnaps.

Caleb, I’m a new sub, I wish I had found you much earlier! I love all of the videos! You are a joy!!! I want plant some amaryllis so bad, but I’m afraid I’ll kill them! I may try…
I Absolutely LOVE YOU! I am so happy to have found your channel at this Christmas, 2022! I Love your recipes, But Mostly, the way that you teach, and your beautiful flamboyant personality!! You are now my FAVORITE CHEF! Thanks so much! I live in Winter Park Florida, and I hope to meet you some day!!!❤🎉😊
This cookie looks like it's going to be crispy. This I have to try. I have my mothers recipe given to her (Erickson Family Dutch) that calls for lemon extract but it's a heavy cookie. Watching Wyse guy (I like the play on words) makes you want to spend time in the kitchen. Bravo!
Santa Is Coming!!! 🎄
I would make cookies without my grandlittles underfoot and freeze them. Then when they would visit, I’d get them out and they would do the icing.
I've not seen powdered vanilla before. I would probably have to order it online. I do have the clear vanilla though.
I bet your friends love coming to your place to eat i know i would
if you get eggshell in the cookie, just tell them it's a special winter crunch :)
Hi, where can I find your lemon/orange squeezer? Do you have any recommendations!? I got All of my ingredients and realized I don’t have the squeezer!!!! Will one work for both, lemons and large oranges?
Where can I find those x large cookie cutters? Most are 3 to 4 inches. Do you have a link to share? Thanks 🎄❤
Wld you plz do a Red Velvet Roll video
Don't get mad... 😁 Sometimes, I can't be bothered pulling everything out and well, I cheat. I use sweet short pastry and use cookie cutter to cut out heart and star shapes then bake. LoL. Ice when finished. Makes my life easier when the grandkids come around.🤣😅😂
Can this recipe be doubled?
Did you renovate your kitchen?
Merrymaking 👅👍
Kaleb when you get a shell in bowl use your finger to remove it
🥰🤶🎅🎄🦌✅
Fun video. We put the orange zest in the cookie dough and the almond flavoring in the frosting.
You are so delightful. I fear, however, after baking & decorating a batch of cookies that would not be able to stand up straight. Your baking counter seems very low for your height.
I watched this yesterday and made them today. Omg, delish
