Sir Laurence Olivier's acting is masterful in this segment. The way his eyes react to Cordelia responding "I think it was papa" is the type of acting only a premier actor of his stature is capable of pulling off so convincingly. To show with expressions -- not words -- the gravity of realizing his daughter's opprobrium toward him, then for the first time beginning to truly fathom the depth of his own sin.
It is interesting to me that people tend to think that "fighting for freedom" means their own personal freedom, when it is more the freedom of governments in control to freely exercise their agendas. It becomes personal freedom only insofar as one identifies with the nation as it functions qua "nation."
What a superb series this is! Faithful to the book too. Although the genre is so different, it reminds me of Granada's Sherlock Holmes series (with Jeremy Brett) where the same trouble was taken with period costumes and scenes. It's the sort of quality one associates with the BBC, and is very impressive coming from a commercial TV channel. Wonder if such a production would be done in the States? Don't think so somehow.
Michael Gough. One of the greats. He had his own masterful turn as a complicated, conflicting paterfamilias a few years after this in To The Lighthouse. It's hard to find online but worth hunting down.
@lizclegg Telling Sebastian won't bring him home as he is too weak to travel ! Remember, when Charles went to tell him that his mother was dying Sebastian agreed that he was too weak to travel then. So now it won't make much of a difference becuase he will be even more weak . Giving him the news of his father's death would make him only more depressed !
Always a mystery how living a life of luxury, no stress, the possibility to eat & live healthy that they so often grow old prematurely and die young. All these godbotherers are tedious. Everyone wants to impose their will even Charles. Nobody asks "do you want a priest"? And then respect his answer.

A good acting lesson from Lord Laurence Olivier at 4:00
I have long been fond of the actor who plays the doctor. he's lovely.

Yes, the only thing more irritating than a religious fanatic is a fanatical atheist.
Everyone questions religion! Not only Catholics! I question mine all the time.
It is a wrestle that is part of human nature.
julia was so complex and yet so basic
one knows not whether to make to love
to her or alas kill her.
