  • OPEN ME!: There's nothing like the arrival of August to send me into a bit of panic. But it's all good. In this vlog I talk about cover sketch progress, not being ready for August (and the fall semester), why being a good editor makes you a better writer, the realities of busy work, and my difficulties at the moment with reading. Is it a reading slump? I don't know. I also have some technical issues but instead of getting upset it just makes me laugh. I hope you enjoy! :) xx

    I feel you with this heat. It is currently 97 and MISERABLE where I am. I so admire your ability to laugh through the struggles of being a writer and I love that you edit your mom's work! Truly a family affair! As I am making content for my channel, I often find myself giving advice that I needed to hear myself and when I go back and edit the video, I'm like "wow Cody...why can't you give yourself that advice?!?" Best of luck with gearing up to start a new school year! Your students are so lucky to have you! :)

      Ugh, the heat is the worst. I'm so over it. I'm hoping that at least the mornings will start cooling down a little in the next few weeks or so. And omg, yes, I love being a vlogger because talking to you all helps me talk through stuff and learn so much about how I approach things. :)

    I just wanted to say I love your nails! I also notice them when you're typing. The nail shape is perfection

      Oh my gosh, thank you! You have no idea how happy this comment makes me! I've always struggled with my nails and felt so insecure about them, but over the last couple of years they've been doing better and I'm really liking how they look now. Most days I just have a bit of nail strengthener on them and don't feel like I have to put polish on them to look nice.

    I dont read as much as I should - Time really doesn't permit picking up a physical book to read. Thank God for audio books and my Kindle e-books :) Favourite books so far: The Secret Gift by Bethany Atazadeh - Read it all in one sitting on my Kindle while waiting at the eye doctor's office.
    Also need to mention the Anne With An E audio book - Listened to that 2 years ago and it has always stayed with me. Love immersive descriptions! Not sure if you're familiar but Anne hates her red hair and names everything from the trees to the flowers to the river. I also hated my curls growing up and greet the birds and butterflies outside my window :)

      Audio books are awesome if you have time to listen but not time to sit and read. And I really need to read the Anne books, I should look them up on audio. :)

    I'm at 119 books so far this year. Two of my favorites have been The Phoenix Crown & Legends and Lattes.

      That's amazing! It's only August! Legends and Lattes has been on my list for a while.

    I went through the roughest reading slump of my life this last year. I'm finally out of it but I have read almost entirely re-reads. Of the previous 23 books I've read, 20 have been re-reads. Mostly guilty pleasure re-reads. I'm playing that stupid game with my library app where it sends me books from my waitlist at the worst time and I just don't feel like reading them at those times. I gave up with some and just took them off the list. I'm such a mood reader! I'm at 26 books this year but that's only because I got sucked into a guilty pleasure series that's 15 books long. Without falling into those again I'd be at like 10. Reading slumps suck. When they go on for too long I know I'm just feeling too overwhelmed and "stressy messy".

      @AndreaJSeverson  Месяц назад +1

      I feel like rereading Deborah Harkness's books are helping get me out of the slump, so I feel you on the guilty pleasure re-reads. And I'm such a mood reader so I feel you on the library delivering books when you're not in the mood to read them. I've delayed delivery on so many books but I'm also just taking some off the list and tagging them to one of my TBR lists instead.

    📚 Hi Andrea! I have been trying to get back into my reading habits by reading the 6 main Jane Austen titles, Phantom of the opera by Gaston Leroux and i am currently reading Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. As you can see it's an eclectic mix haha 📚

    • @AndreaJSeverson
      @AndreaJSeverson  Месяц назад

      That is such a great mix of books! I haven't ready Leroux's Phantom in years. I read it back in high school and loved it.

    Editing is sometimes hard for me as a writer I think due to not creating anything new. I love drafting so much that when I am editing it feels more like work than writing in general does. Hard to say that would be the same for business writers but maybe that's why they don't edit. My favorite books I have read this year (so far) is Delilah Green Doesn't Care or Imogen, Obviously. Both super cute!

    • @AndreaJSeverson
      @AndreaJSeverson  Месяц назад

      I like the early stages of editing but by this point I'm just getting bored with it lol. I'm so ready to be done. At this point it doesn't feel creative anymore, it does just feel like work. And both of those books sound so good!

    So far I have read 70 books,I don’t have a goal, I just read 😊…..one of the BEST books I have read for 2024, is The Women by Kristen Hannah… I absolutely love that book. I also enjoyed the Chestnut Spring Series by Elsie Silver…and The Billionaire Series by Lauren Asher 📚📚📚

      70 is awesome! I think next year I'm just going to give up on setting a goal. Or set it to like 5 on my tracker, so that it's so low I know I'll hit it. I haven't read The Women but I loved her book The Nightingale.

      Honestly I'm thinking next year I'm going to either not set a goal or set it really low, like 5 books. I like tracking what I read but I'm realizing I don't think I like having a "reading challenge".

    I think everyone who writes should self-edit as best they can,. I've read through my unedited stories and ugh! It's not pretty.. haha I'm also on team 'send to editor' if you can afford it but that's because I don't have a PHD. I'm smart enough to know that I don't have those skills.

    • @AndreaJSeverson
      @AndreaJSeverson  Месяц назад

      I'm lucky that I have the experience to edit my own work, but I would love to work with an editor if I could afford one. But every writer benefits from learning how to edit as much as possible before sending it to an editor. :)
