I think this type of issue with pop bumpers can be fixed by loosening the two screws that hold on the spoon assembly. Only loosen enough to jiggle the spoon so it’s centered and comfortable with the stick on underside of the bumper skirt. Getting that stick part in the center of the spoon makes for even response to the ball, no matter where it ouches the skirt.
After watching this channel and “My Brother Donnie”, I have a huge urge to wanna hang out with you guys!! Seen like a bunch of good ole southern boys! Have a great weekend.
It does my heart good when you bring these early solid states back to life Ron. I played a ton on Stars back in the day. The right spinner was key to big scores and they would jack the back legs to max plus angle the left flipper up a bit to reduce clean spinner shots at 1000 points a turn... of course we’d crank the back legs down a bit when no one was looking :-)
hahaha that's pretty funny. I have this one jacked up too I like how fast they play like that but it might be better to slow this particular one down :) Thanks for watching Scott we appreciate it!
Its so good to come home from work each day and hang out with you fixing pinies and arcades. My knowledge on fixing a pinball has gone from 0 to something watching all of yours and T.N.T.'s videos over the past couple of years. I was wondering if you put a sticker or a mark of such similar to t.n.t. in that we would know and be proud to own a machine that has passed through your hands. Thanks for all of your uploads.
I haven't but I may start doing that in the future :) I think most of them you can tell because they always have wear or some kind of identifying mark, and we take a lot of pictures of each game when we get done.... Todd's the man!
It came out beautiful your work on these old machines is always outstanding. I love the sounds of the bells and chimes the clicking counters twinkling lights it is truly magical when it all works, Great job! And thank you for sharing it with us.
That tiny time slice of "solid state but with physical chimes" was a magical thing that will never happen again. It needs to be cherished and preserved.
Haven't read all the comments, but you need to turn the match on in dip switch settings. Also there's another dip setting that makes the bonus countdown count in multiples or singles. Looks like it's on singles. One other weird setting on the first couple of Stern games is you can make it a 2 player game via a dip setting. Apparently there was a 2 player backglass but i've never seen one.
It might scream 1978, but it would fit into a modern arcade just as nicely now after what you did to bring it to life. This is a really great and fun game. I like these older games that didn't theme themselves based on movies and the like. Even if some had similarities :) I do love the chimes. I don't know why, I just think chimes are better than any of the more modern sounds
Yeah I wish they would make more games now with independent themes, all the licensed stuff gets so cookie cutter. I like them too ultimately, but I really like the original ones.
Great game. Love the videos, hope there is a repair video on this one I'll be searching. Just sayin, i think of you were to replace the center post with a truck tire you would still find a way to pass the ball by it. In other words, you kind of stuck at pinball. Love the electro- mechanical aspect. 👍🏻
You mentioned on the playfield cleanup video that they put ceramic disk capacitors on the switches to lengthen the pulse, could your issue with the pop bumper be a faulty cap?
Maybe.... the cap kind of sends the signal to the board that the switch is closed (it makes the pulse longer)... and the pop bumper is being triggered, which means the board knows that the pop bumper was hit, so you would think that the board would also know that the pop bumper was hit, to give you the score for hitting it too. I can't figure out why it would do 1 thing (kick the ball) but not the other thing (score the points) when the trigger for both is the switch being pressed.
Yup. It's a great history of pinball, basically Harry Williams started Williams pinball in the 30's.... then hired Sam Stern to run the company at some point, Sam Stern eventually bought half of Williams and the company was sold in 59 or so... In 76 or so, Sam Stern and his son Gary Stern bought Chicago Coin, and turned it into Stern Electronics. They made pinball machines but also arcade games (as Chicago Coin had).... After they went digital, they actually talked Harry Williams, at this point well into his 70's, into coming out of retirement and designing pinball machines for them! So the old man, the FATHER OF PINBALL comes back after having designed 180 pinball machines in his lifetime, and designs a few more for Stern including the great Flight 2000. Stern eventually goes out of business, and Harry Williams passes away... but Gary Stern ends up as president of Data East, then Sega... and when Sega goes under, buys Sega out and creates the new Stern Pinball company which is thriving at the moment.
@@LyonsArcade In a previous video during the solenoid test you mentioned the knocker was disconnected. In this video you posed the question of why it still said ball 5 in play at the end of the game and that's why I just asked if the Match feature was turned off.
If the legs are new or in good shape usually you just have to put the leg levelers the same distance out of each leg to balance it, unless your floor is uneven.
Hey Joe...I have a short video of our cat Orion chasing the pinball around on the TV screen while watching you test this Stars machine thought you may enjoy it..Is there a way i can send it to you ?
That's pretty cool I never knew that! Their first one was called "Pinball".... so they made "Star Pinball" and followed it up shortly with "Star Stars"
The free ball with no score.... probably is just in case the ball does not make it up the hill to the shooter so it kicks it again :) the shooter lane probably does not have a rollover :P
@@LyonsArcade LOL.. No serious question. I'm not like that. All of your videos seems to play much faster than my Hokus Pokus machine. The manual on mine says 6.5 degrees which i find odd... 6.5? Is seven degrees the danger zone or something?? Might raise mine up and see if i like it.

You appear to have turned on your magnetic belt buckle :) Great pin save and great set of videos
Ron, nice looking game and artwork. Yep, looks difficult but looks fun to play. Thanks for taking us along for the play.
Well done Ron, excellent job. Never occurred to me that pre 80 machines had no way of generating sounds so had to use chimes.
That tiny time slice of "solid state but with physical chimes" was a magical thing that will never happen again. It needs to be cherished and preserved.
Space is the place! Fun fact: Stern is the german word for "star". I'm sure nobody pointed that out, ever :P
I never heard that pretty interesting!
It's pronounced differently though, something like "schtare-n".
Another successful surgery Dr. Ron!
It's getting there :)
At first glance you wouldn't even think those machines came out in the same decade, let alone less than a year apart.
Technology was changing!

I would never be able to play a pinball game that angles the ball straight down the middle so much.
You watched the whole video and that's your only comment? Must mean the rest of everything was GREAT AND PERFECT, THANKS!!!!!

I"m the greatest pinball player in the world!
“Pinball” belies the amazing giant pinball on the back glass. It’s amusing.
It seems that the Pop Bumper isn't sensitive enough. Is there any way to make the switch trigger easier or faster?
We did that and talked about it in the part of the video you skipped.
I have a Stern Magic pinball machine in that era. Have you had one?
I have not, unfortunately!
You mentioned on the playfield cleanup video that they put ceramic disk capacitors on the switches to lengthen the pulse, could your issue with the pop bumper be a faulty cap?

2 player version of Rawhide is Stampede. I bought one with no backglass a few years back very cheap and never ever could find a glass.
Brutal game but I love brutal games. Those really test your skill.
Yes it does! I might have the bands on too tight though :)

Match feature turned off or not included? Did you repair the knocker solenoid?
Todd why are you going out of your way to find what you think is wrong with the machine and then ask about it? Deny it, then think about it later.

Are you having a bad day Ron? Why are you attacking some of our comments?
Question.
How do you balance of pinball machine?
I know it's dealing with the end of the legs.
But how you know it's balanced properly?
If the legs are new or in good shape usually you just have to put the leg levelers the same distance out of each leg to balance it, unless your floor is uneven.

Rock Hill rocks!
By the way did you ever figure out what the "white crud" was that was stuck in the glass channel on the left side. Was it drywall?
I'm not sure but I do think it was Drywall :)
It looks like there was an "A" revision to the ROMs, maybe it fixes some of the scoring issues.
Could be!

Would be interesting to see how it performed with an Alltek Ultimate MPU board installed.
The Alltek board uses the exact same code as the original game....
Chicago coin any good ? I can get one local works but it's missing 2 score reels price is right though
I'm not the one to ask, I like all of them :) If the price is good i'd definitely buy it, you can get the parts on ebay.
Was that a NBA fast break next to rapid fire?
