I don't think I saw this one at the time, a very hard fought match with lots of action. Perhaps less finesse and quality than either side would have liked, but I think that reflects that they were both closely matched and desperate to win. The penalty shoot out was rather exciting too, plenty of misses and saves. I hadn't taken note at the time how close Bulgaria had been to going out at this stage, it could have been Mexico vs Germany in the quarters.
After watching the highlights, Bulgaria played better and had better players. Bulgaria deserved to advance no question about it. I mean they knocked out the defending world cup champions Germany from the tournament.
@@Trancymindnahhh México played better …..the only reason, Mexico didn’t beat Bulgaria in play time was because the referee unfairly red carded their best forward (Garcia) on the pitch on the 50th minute. Mexico played with one less man for 70 minutes and Bulgaria couldn’t beat them with one man down. If anything Mexico continued attacking and creating chances. If Mexico had not received a red card in the beginning of the second half, the legendary Hugo Sanchez would have came in in the second half and that team would have been unstoppable. Mexico played with two forwards, but with one man down, they had to play with one forward. Apart from that, Mexico played with the home advantage since Mexico and the US are neighboring countries.
@@BarranquillaWestonBaron didn't like Hugo Sanchez. It is the main reason why he didn't wanted to use him at all after the second game at the world cup.

Recuerdo mucho este partido y fue una moneda al aire, cualquiera pudo ganar y la suerte fue para Bulgaria quien ganó los penales, lamentablemente siempre nos preguntamos en México porque el D.T. Mejia Barón no hizo cambias antes de terminar el juego, no metió a Hugo Sánchez, ni a Carlos Hermosillo quienes eran expertos en penales, además de la expulsión de Luis García, habían otros jugadores que tenían mejor capacidad para definir y al final optó por quienes no debieron tirar un penal, está selección mexicana tenía para más ya que venían de ser subcampeones de la Copa América 93 y Bulgaria apartir de este juego fue cuando se creció más y llegaron lejos en este mundial.... Bellos recuerdos 😌💭⚽
De hecho, el cambio adecuado no era para meter ni a Hugo ni a Hermosillo, era misael el indicado, porque los búlgaro estaban cansados, terminaron por puro orgullo, entonces pensemos: voy a meter a un delantero fijo? no creo, mejor a un extremo fresco que generara juego por las bandas, pero sobre todo para terminar de reventar físicamente a los búlgaros….

El mismo mejía barón dijo que sí quería meter a hugo sánchez por benjamín galindo, pero como hugo se negó a jugar en media cancha ya no quiso mover nada, y tuvo razón, si metía a hugo capaz que éste hace lo que se le pega la gana. El error fue el orden de los tiradores, primero debió ser benjamín Galindo, luego claudio suárez (el único que anotó) después aspe y los demás (capaz que tiraban menos presionados)

Why did the Bulgarian player get a red card? 4:25
To be honest, there was no reason. In my opinion, the subsequent red card to Luis Garcia was given by the ref to even the playing field because I believe the ref had an attack of conscience for sending off Emil Kremeliev for no reason. I understand the ref too was sent home after this game, just like Swedish referee Bo Karlsson, who was sent home by then-FIFA president Joao Havelenge after rashly booking Nigeria's Sunday Oliseh for a foul committed by Augustine Eguavoen in the game between Argentina and Nigeria, the only game he officiated. Havelenge had no patience with erring referees and during his administration, several referees had their licenses revoked or suspended. As a result, the refs in the mid-1990's upped their game, and many were brilliant, with the legendary Pierluigi Collina setting a standard that most of today's referees are struggling to live up to.
You can tell the referee was 100% pro mexican. I saw this game live and there shouldn't been a yellow card nor a foul. I was shocked when the bulgarian player received the 2nd yellow card.

Al-Sharif i remember of the name of the worst referee with Corver and Moreno. The match wsmas boring but not violent but this syrian gave full cards without reason. The red card for Kremenliev and Luos Garcia aee a joke as the penalty for Mexico.
And i know a few mexicans who wonders alwys why Meija Naron (Mexico coach) hadn't a substitution in 120 minutes. He had Hermossillo or Hugo achez on the pitch and his team was tired after 1 hour.
