Benchmade: new 710 Axis Lock Springs measured to see how will the Flat Omega Spring perform?

  • This is the nerdiest video that I have published to date! I am measuring the spring coefficient differences between the original, omega spring and the new flat omega spring. I am taking a look at their stiffness and toughness to predict the expected performance.
Additionally, I’m looking at some of the design misses that are common to most Benchmade knives. Again!

I appreciate your engineering and machinist objectivity when you evaluate these products for functionality, durability, quality, etc. No one else even comes close! It is documented, and usually data driven. Thanks for that. When you talk about aesthetics, however, (although I often agree with you), it's fun, but there is no right or wrong. I enjoy your site a lot!

Thank you for showing the differences with the New Omega Springs for the New Benchmade Folders. That spring does look a lot stronger. I've broken the old Omega Springs in my SOCP 391BK, twice... :-) I purchased more Springs on eBay; most likely Chinese Aftermarket Springs, for $10 for eight Springs. I installed them and Lubed them with Lithium based Gun Grease. I never had anymore issues. The reason why I think I was breaking the Springs is because I wasn't using two fingers on the Axis-Lock to open and disengage the Blade. Great Video! :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

I like the basic stone wash pocket clip best. I don’t feel it needs to match the blade finish. I like how the basic version will sort of disappear to the knife, and I like how it looks when it wears. I’d be interested if benchmade makes a 3” blade version of the 710 as well.

I've had to send a bailout & Osborne 940 back to Benchmade for new omega springs while my Ritter Hogues with way more milage still feel perfect. I have a couple kizer & cjrb with similar axis lock style locking system but I've hardly carried those BUT I will say the tension necessary to operate those locks are MUCH stronger and take more strength to operate which actually feels pretty good in hand.
When it comes to factory edges, the last two Benchmade that I've purchased both came with very lacking, toothy edges. Both my freek and mini freek edges were very disappointing while all 5 of my Ritter Hogues came with practically a mirrors edge.

I will not be interested in testing a Shiro or even buying one. I watched 3 very long Russian-language videos in which the owner gave a factory tour and he convinced me that it is not as custom of a knife as they prop it out to be. Nor is there anything in its performance that would make it more appealing to me. For the price, there are much better US-made and South African knives. I know, Metal_complex keeps the buzz up but it’s because he dumped a load of money into his Shiro collection.

Do you think this Axis Lock spring configuration is the best yet, the Anthem’s, or perhaps another design? I’d hypothesize that coil springs, even with smaller cross-sections, might handle more cycles before fatigue failure-but I’m no engineer.

It is my belief that the popularity of knives has peaked and is now on a slight downward slide. Or possibly due to the increase in Chinese and other world manufacturing of knives the market is reaching a saturation point. Popular knife manufacturers rode the wave and now that they are selling fewer, (my opinion), are raising prices both due to inflation and to keep profit at the same or higher levels. In the scheme of things owning knives costing hundreds of dollars is a luxury and inflation certainly pinches the knife budget of many people. I’ve noticed the increasing emphasis of knife reviewers on RUclips toward budget knives. So, paying the “butterfly tax” doesn’t appeal so much. I appreciate your interesting and different content. Thanks for pointing out the flat omega spring and specifics.

    • @21_Cabbage_

Safe queens and Knife Selling companies created this buzz word called "Fidget Factor" that you're not thinking of. Some idiot slamming the blade back and forth all day for a prolonged period of time will put a life times worth of abuse on a spring compared to someone who just simply pulls their knife out, cuts something, and puts it back in their pocket. Don't blame the company on that, blame the user.

I think Benchmade’s quality has dropped while their pricing has skyrocketed to absurdity. Especially when compared to Spyderco, Kershaw, Hogue, Microtech, etc. They are charging Sebenza prices at nowhere near the quality. They have lost their libtard minds.

    • @squirts1
      @squirts1 27 дней назад

Quality is the same. The "Benchmade tax" has always existed. This is not new... and has nothing to do with politics.
Spyderco also has significantly inflated their prices. Capara S30v lists at $264 (compare to bugout S90v and CF at $270)... base Para 3 lists at $160 (compared to a bugout at $165)...
Spyderco also has some knives at "sabenza prices" that should be half the price. Stovepipe at $410? Drunken at $490? Paysan at $644?
Microtech? What? Are you talking about their ram lock? the FRN knife priced at 250$? 🤣
Kershaw is cheap because their knives are cheap...
CRK are among the most overpriced and overrated knives on the market.

Why do you do these reviews like these knives are anywhere close to worth what they charge? Are you a sponsor for benchmade? And that is a real question. These knives are so overpriced, It doesn’t even matter what the features are. And did you just say they pay attention when their customer say something? People have been making these complaints about bench made for years and years and years if not a decade. Nobody thinks a benchmade bugout is a bad knife for $75. But when you charge 3 times the worth to 50-60 year olds in sporting goods stores it ridiculous and should be stopped.

I mean come on this guy spent like half the video bashing benchmade saying,”yeah it’s a cool knife but it’s not worth it”. It like your mongoloid brain couldn’t comprehend this entire video. Either that or you’re a caveman that has no idea how to watch a video on RUclips because you clearly didn’t watch it. Interesting that you know how to comment though. Regardless am I a benchmade fan boy? Yes. Are these knives worth it? No, unless discounted or second hand. The 710 especially is not worth it, it’s crazy expensive but at the same time so are gucci glasses but I don’t see you complaining about that. Benchmade isn’t the only knife company that’s overpriced countless other companies knives are overpriced yet people choose to think it’s only Benchmade that is overpriced.
