  • Welcome back, everyone! I've made some progress on the CNC machine. I got the top plate on and consulted Reddit for some advice. Many suggested avoiding heat to prevent hardening the stainless steel. So, I decided to bend it manually instead.
I created a little tool to get inside the stainless and bend it at the weld joint. This method worked pretty well, and I managed to reduce the warping significantly. It's tough to eliminate all the warping due to the nature of the shrinkage, but it's much better now.
Next, I installed the bolts. In a previous video, I mentioned these little tools I made to mark the bolt positions. I clamped everything down to keep it flat, then used a hammer to create divots in the stainless steel. These tools are one-time use, and I made sure to thread the bolts in fully to avoid damaging the threads with the hammer's impact.
The front still needs some work. I'm thinking of using M5 stainless steel bolts to secure the front and make it look nicer. The welding process left some rough areas, especially where the top and bottom pieces overlapped. I used Solar Flux Type B to try and prevent sugaring, but it left a nasty black residue that I'll need to clean up.
For those interested, I made the tools from typical Ikea Allen keys. I used a diamond cut-off wheel to avoid debris and a flap wheel to shape the tips. It was a bit time-consuming, but it worked well for this purpose.
My main goal now is to get the machine back together and running smoothly. Thanks for watching, and I'll see you in the next update!

Comparing the welding I did to the bottom chip pan to this top skirt, the aluminum chill bars made a huge difference keeping the chip pan from warping. On the chip pan it has no visual warping and much less blowouts. Regardless I just care about its functionality so will keep it for now until I figure out something better. It’d be nice to find a local place to me that can bend the 18ga lengths as I could also put a vertical lip on the very outside perimeter.

For holding the stainless… it’s pricey but 3M VHB tape. They have a special variety for panel mounting.
