  • "How I" built my campervan "Van Life" bed. But first I had to build the 'Toilet / shower room' frame work to enable to install my bed, which houses a garage underneath the bed.
    UPDATE!
    The mattress will not be sat directly on top of the bed base it self! I still have a aluminium frame to install to raise the mattress away from the bed base, to allow for air circulation😉👍

    Great vid! 'half a mile of tape' and 'apply the ply', entertaining as well as informaitve. It's all a really good build, the bed insulating base a lot of van builds miss doing I bet. I've subscribed because this is a strong practical build, well thought thru at each bit, and you are physically able to build it all very well and mentally able to figure it all out first. You're a good interesting bloke, I wish I lived nearby, I would enjoy helping out if an extra pair of hands were needed. Best wishes, Alan, UK (Norfolk).

Then I film it.......But not in my next video (I'm editing and filming right now) about the shower /wet room.... It sort of gone, a bit Pete Tong! (back on track now though bud 😁). Luckily for me nothing has gone majorly wrong (besides the finger incident) ohhh and this shower 🚿😂😁👍👍👍

      There is a product used in the sailing industry called DRY-mat to go between a solid bed base and the mattress. It’s basically a honey comb material but allows air to flow through between the bed base and mattress. 👍🏼

    ahhh the first build I have seen insulating between the mattress suppourts and the "garage" adding a cross flow under, pretty much stopping cold bridging that most forget about, its cold bridging that causes condensation. You've done what I would of to tackle that. Are you also adding an air flow on top with some slats etc.

    • @Iveavan
      @Iveavan  5 лет назад

      The side beams bent slightly? There tilted up slightly due to the curvature of the van 🤔. They are thinner at only 25mm x 30mm screwed into the 5mm plywood board, and behind that board is a 75mm x 30 mm that runs along that full section of the van as an anchor point for the bed matey 😉👍👍👍

    Hey Mark, greetings from Germany. Your van conversion is a great inspiration, you're really doing a fantastic job. We are currently also planning a conversion on the same Iveco model. May I ask you what the measurements of your bed are(preferably in cm)? Until I saw your videos I planned on building the bed lengthwise in driving direction, since I always thought I wouldn't fit into the van sidways. But it just takes too much space with a total length of about 1,90 - 2 meters. I'm 1,84m tall. But as of your bed construction and maybe with the wall covers built deeper into the wall like your white "leftouts", I should easily fit in there.

    • @Iveavan
      @Iveavan  5 лет назад +1

      Hello over in Germany and thank you 😁👍, to truly answer this question, I'll have to get back to you tomorrow night, (I'm away from the van) but I can answer the length at 182 cm but that's with 2. 5cm of insulation each side (the white inserts). But I'll measure the width and height to enable to give a guide matey 👌😉👍👍👍

    • @Iveavan
      @Iveavan  5 лет назад +1

      @Sandwurm2000 the bed height, bottom of the bed base, from the original van floor is 77cm in height, and 129cm wide from bulkhead to bulkhead. I hope that helps 😉👍👍👍

    • @MagellanXX
      @MagellanXX 5 лет назад +1

      @@Iveavan Thanks so much for your replies. Now I know why you have so much space left in the van :) I need at least a width of 140cm in order to sleep comfortable (my girlfriend may be smaller then me but she needs a lot of space while sleeping :D ) But as soon we have our van and start building I will also try to build the bed sideways, since it will safe a lot of room for the seating area and kitchen.

    Did you need such a strong base if you're putting an aluminium bed frame with sprung slats on top anyway, half the white wood ( 2x1 ) would have worked and no need for the 1x1.
    You're doing a great job Mark, just wondering now was the aluminium bed frame with slots an afterthought because of commenters on the subject of damp mattresses?
    My van no damp or mouldy mattress and no slots. Greg Virgoe didn't bother so it will be good to see how his worked out when he's back.
    Lol I think there's a lot of drunk piss the beds that like the safety net of airflow under the their mattress or people spilling drinks while lying on the bed, heavy sweaters as well I guess.
    I'm certainly not knocking slots, I'd probably fit them in a conversion myself but I'd also duct a diesel heater outlet under the bed as well, 2" gap all under the bed but blocked off from the garage, open duct and heat for 20 mins before bed, also kills any bed bugs or dust mites and sorts out moisture, I mean why not!

    • @Iveavan
      @Iveavan  5 лет назад +1

      Yes bud, I'm only going to use the sprung lats slightly raised off the base, the aluminium frame will not fit in there with out cutting it up matey, plus the thickness of the wood was to accommodate the 50 mm insulation, it can't weigh any more the 15kg as it is bud 😉👍👍👍

    • @pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN
      @pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN 5 лет назад +1

      @Iveavan  5 лет назад +1

      Cheers matey 😉👍, I was going to use it bud, but by the time I'd chop the bugger up to fit it, they where no point mate. I kinda agree with you on the bed base scenario though, I might not even use the lats yet as duvan beds don't have ventilation 🤔.... We see bud 😉, I think the mattress might even have to go through the skylight yet 😅😕... 😉👍👍👍

    • @pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN
      @pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN 5 лет назад +1

      @@Iveavan I think foam mattresses may pose a bigger problem than sprung type as sprung type are usually pretty hollow and allow airflow but who knows lol.
      My bed at home is getting old and so is the mattress, box type base with no ventilation, a sprung mattress and no damp or mould.
      Foam mattresses in my van with solid bases and nothing that I've ever noticed.
      Warm air touching something cold condensates it but you took care of that with the 50mm insulation.
      Greg Virgoe on youtube has done a great professional job on his van.
      The comment section is divided by his reasoning not to drill holes or use slots.
      Greg is touring europe at the moment in his sprinter conversion and you may already know him or are already subscribed to his channel but you could always ask him how he's getting on with his solid base, he would be the first to say if he needs ventilation under the mattress Mark.
      Hopefully whichever choice you make damp or mould will not be a problem mate😊👍★★★★★

    • @Iveavan
      @Iveavan  5 лет назад +1

      If any one should know Greg will, seeing he is an engineer too 😉. I'm on the same line as yourself , on thinking, regarding the "bed base theory " , each room will be heated too in my van 🤔. Thinking about it, it certainly makes sense in what your saying and do I need the extra work in dicking around with lats...........No bud😣, sod it ! Its a sprung mattress and I haven't reached that infirm age ( yet ) where I'm pissing the mattress 🤣, sod it! I'll just going to throw it in, and have done with it.....Like you say, its well insulated! ( Probably over the top, but for all year round use I'm thinking bud) . Cheers for making my mind up on that one matey 😁😉🤫👌👍👍👍

    • @Iveavan

      Hey up bud, no because the mattress will not be sitting on the bed base it self, there's a frame going in with sprung lats in it, to keep it off the base mate. I can't fit it yet due to needing to fit the deviding wall between the bed room and the shower room, plus overhead cupboards, it probably be the last thing I will fit to be honest bud 😉👍👍👍

    • @Iveavan

      I can only just squeeze 6ft out of it, hence the cut outs in the wall, they will serve no purpose at all but once the matress is in ( with frame 😉 ) the bed will measure 6ft just to get it through the DVLA matey, the bed came out of a caravan and that does fit across the van 😁👍👍👍
