Bewitched Reactions to Being a Witch

  • Samantha Tells Darrin Stephens in the pilot episodes to Bewitched in 1964 that she's a witch. Although Samantha's magic is far beyond what even most Siddhars can perform, life amongst Muggles to quote Harry Potter's fictional realm is still met with shunning amongst the ULTRA SPIRITUAL.
Those who are truly gifted are not welcome.
Pay attention to how Darrin's best friend, Dave (Gene Blakely (1921-1987)) doesn't listen to a word and the bartender Al Paul Barselou (1922-2017) thinks his wife is a REAL witch.
Notice how Dr. Koblin C. Lindsay Workman (1924-2012) blows off Darrin completely.
Samantha was portrayed by Elizabeth Montgomery (1933-1995)
Darrin Stephens by Dick York (1928-1992)
The series is still great fun after all these years. It's great for seeing how people dressed, talked, even walked and interacted.
    Darrin Stephens: You're a what?
    Samantha: I'm a witch!
Darrin Stephens: That's wonderful. We'll talk about it tomorrow.
    Samantha: Now! I am a witch. A real broom-riding, house-haunting, cauldron-stirring witch.
Darrin Stephens: It MUST be the champagne. Now, darling, it's been a hectic day for both of us. This getting married is tougher than it looks.
Samantha: Would I say I am a witch if I'm not?
Darrin Stephens: I don't know. I have an aunt who thinks she's a lighthouse. Whenever it rains she insists on climbing up on the garage roof to warn the sailors.
Samantha: How do you know she isn't a lighthouse?
    Darrin Stephens: Huh?
Samantha: Maybe you were the one who was looking straight at a lighthouse and thought you were seeing an old lady on a garage roof.
The dialogue has a lot of metaphysical nuances. I highly recommend binge watching the old episodes. There are scenes worth revisiting.

Love that episode. I even bought a navy blue sailor dress similar to Samantha’s. Happy memories of seeing the show with my family when it first came out. ❤🙏

The 1️⃣st clip was when Endora sent them.(Samantha & Darrin) back to before they were married to get his reaction when she tells Darrin that she's a witch 🧙‍♀️. All the other clips are from the 1️⃣st episode.

I remember how we couldn't wait for the next episodes of Bewitched and/or I Dream of Jeannie. Looking back, you have to remember the fear people had back then. Witches and Jinn - the very idea of magick with a "k" was just on verge of coming out of the deep past. Notice how Darrin says he can't tell his parents even though his aunt believes she's a lighthouse and goes up up the roof whenever it rains.

Watch the entire video. This first half is an excerpt from the pilot and the second half is the excerpt from the first episode that aired. As I kid I saw both. There's a lot of nostalgia - notice the green refrigerator in the apartment. The jokes about getting a drink in a dry state sent me back in time to my dad bringing a traveling cocktail suitcase with us.

One of my favorites. Maybe it was better that Sam didn't tell Darrin that she is a witch, until after their marriage. This is a "what if" episode, and Darrin acts differently when she did tell him on their wedding night than he does here. Of course, he didn't remember it.
He freaks out in this episode, while Darrin was more shicked when Sam first told him. But in the original event and this "what if" episode, no matter what Endora tried, Sam and Darrin loved one another too much to cause a breakup.
As Endora had to admit to Hephzibah, after all the things she'd done to Darrin over the years, she told her, "He loves my daughter." ❤

I always liked that even Endora had to admit when pressed that he really did love her. Why else would he stick around and endure all that craziness?

The first half is from the pilot episode and the second half is from the first episode. What is so cool is the screen chemistry and incredible comedic timing. Did you know that Agnes Moore and Dick York were best friends? doyouremember.com/142009/bewitched-dick-york-agnes-moorehead-friendship

@@barbaracampbell8751 Well, this episode is totally diffeeent from I, DARRIN TAKE THIS WITCH, SAMANTHA. It's a "what if' episode. Yeah, Dick York and Elizabeth Montgomery did have a nice on-screen chemistry here. I also know that Moorehead and York were good friends.
Do you know that Agnus Moorehead was also upset when Dick York had to leave and she took it out on Dick Sargent when he came onboard? Liz blew her cool and told her to apologize. Moorehead did, in front of everyone on set. But she still didn't treat him right for two years. It hurt Dick Sargent, but they did become friends before Moorehead's death.
Fortunately Liz and Agnus didn't let the incident affect their relationship.

@@kerrykeene6471 YES! Back in the day, I used to have a book about the series with all the gossip and all of the episodes written out. With the Internet, I think I donated the book. I grew up outside NYC so i watched the show on Channel 7(ABC) . Gosh everyone loved it. I had just started 5th grade on September 17, 1964, and it ended while I was a senior in HS March 25, 1972. The show started to degrade towards the end as did I Dream of Jeannie but in the beginning they stood through time as some of the most creative script writing ever. And clean. You could watch it with any age group and laugh. I can't say that about today at all.

@@barbaracampbell8751 yes I heard they were best friends. They both shared a spiritual /religious chemistry that take friends to a nice level..Was said York left the show because of a ongoing back issue that made him not to mobile during the later seasons she was in.. Agnes must have been a good support very good support for him doing those difficult years of pain pain pain terrible thing to go through when you're so young.. he probably resented Sergeant for taking over and also I guess because he was gay. I don't know if he was open or not but it probably rubbed Agnes the wrong way sadly..

THAT"S HILARIOUS! Dark Shadows aired June 27, 1966, to April 2, 1971. Samantha and Derwood got married presumably in 1964 so unless Samantha knew of or was somehow related to Angélique Bouchard Collins, I"m not sure how that would have turned out!
