I've got some auditions coming up and I decided it was time to dust off the old Mendelssohn Scherzo from a Midsummer Night's Dream. Historically this has always been one of my weakest orchestral excerpts, though I have striven to change that in recent years! As much as this excerpt challenges me, I'm still thankful that the clarinets don't have to play the flute part!

Cool to see how you approach these kinds of excerpts and cannot get over the beautiful woody sound you have on that tosca 👌👍

    I should swab more 😅.
Question. I'm getting much better at getting passages and phrases under my fingers but memorization is so much slower when I'm reading sheet vs trying to recall it, but the recall slows progress a bit.
In pieces like this do you just let the memorization come in time or do you also spend time trying to recall it? Or at this point does memorization come easily?

Thanks for watching Russell! For this one the memorization came over time, but over the pandemic I’ve been working hard on actively memorizing pieces even in the early stages of playing them. It was difficult at first, but after making a conscious effort to work on it everyday after a while the process started to become a little more second nature! It will get easier!

I practice paganini capriccio numero 5 every morning, that takes care of this piece as well.

I'd love to see a detailed explanation of how you use practice rhythms. I have Russianoff's sequences for duple and triple meter passages but without dissecting what's here it seems to be a bit different?

Sure, in my next video I’ll do a break down of all (or at least most of) the practice rhythms I use for quickly learning technique!

It’s a custom barrel made for me by a friend, I am afraid he doesn’t sell them!

@@ParkHouseCreations where did you do your undergraduate. I feel that you videos were a bit targeted towards me. Was in the semi-finals for BSO pre-pandemic - clarinetist turned flutist. Baltimore is so historically rich. Would love to chat it up. The negativity online is atrocious.
Your sound is beautiful. We have such similarities.
