I have autism but wasn’t diagnosed until I was 40. When I was 16 I met a girl from London who blew me away and I didn’t know what to do. This song reminds me of her.
"I should have kissed you by water" Still gives me chills after all these years. very relatable idea of what "could be" in relationships and missed opportunities
This combined with "I'd have let you if you asked me" really nails those mixed feelings you get when you look back at what could have been. On one hand you hate yourself for not making a move, but on the other hand you're wishing they just made the first move and it would have been easy. Sometimes we just don't know what to do in those situations and the opportunity slowly dissipates. Regardless, the memory stays with you forever; "I still remember".
I am convinced this song is about a potential homosexual relationship. The main singer claims the song was about a man. He is also very “dodgy” about songs about his sexuality. I think he is Bisexual and doesn’t really fit into the straight/gay boxes that people want to put him into.
I get chills every time with this song. Kele (the lead singer) wasn't out when this song came out, and after he came out it had a totally new layer of meaning for me. Such a beautiful heartbreaking song.
He was, I can distinctly remember we knew he was at least bi sexual even with the first album, he didnt like to talk about it in interviews but everybody sort of knew he was gay buy didnt really care enough to push the issue I suppose. This song was openly about a same sex attraction between teachers
Sorry, but this song is about 2 teenagers not teachers. It's not only in the lyrics (teachers are not likely to be writing their names on ever train during a teacher training day while the kids are all off) but he's spoken about it loads. I was Bloc Party fan back in the day, they were one of the few good indie bands that came to West Coast of Ireland regularly He came out publicly about the time of the song, likely to get ahead of the Tabloids doing it. It may have been an open secret before that for your average listener, it wasn't known (or cared about) widely. Again, he's spoken about this quite a bit, you don't have to take my word for it. Regardless, wonderful song
If this song doesn’t conjure up in in your head a montage of a all the firsts of a teenage love then… I don’t know what will. Still can’t believe this song was released when I was 15 and it still stirrs up all the same butterflies now, about the same guy 😌 madness! Will always be one of my favourites!
I Still Remember Bloc Party I still remember How you looked that afternoon There was only you You said it's just like a full moon Blood beats faster in our veins We left our trousers by the canal And our fingers, they almost touched You should have asked me for it I would have been brave You should have asked me for it How could I say no? And our love could have soared Over playgrounds and rooftops Every park bench screams your name I kept your tie I've gone wherever you wanted And on that teachers' training day We wrote our names on every train Laughed at the people off to work So monochrome and so lukewarm And I can see our days are becoming nights I could feel your heartbeat across the grass We should have run I would go with you anywhere I should have kissed you by the water You should have asked me for it And our love could have soared I would let you if you asked me I still remember
In 2019... I still remember. This band, this song, this sentiment, what I felt when I first heard it. This is one of those songs that just about everybody can relate to, and think of someone who fit the description - if not at school... somewhere.
This is an excellent song but it is also a brilliant lesson in production and song dynamics. The way the song builds (particularly the intensification after "I should have kissed you..") is exemplary.
This song sums up my university years in the 00s. That innocent happy sad nostalgia of chasing love interests and friends only to eventually see everyone move away after college, but yet looking back at those fun, care free years of early adulthood. We were freer then
I forgot how good block party were and how many great songs they made and how many great memories of days I wish I could re live. Until I started listening to them again in February 2023 🤘❤
It is just that their debut album set the bar so high with true gems like "banquet" or "this modern love", that when this one came out.. People where disappointed but over time you realize that it is just as good. Overall the entire album is solid.
Naomi Prendergast For me it's nostalgic in both senses of the word though. It may not be super old, but when you're young 5 years ago is a long time ago.
J'ai l'impression de me prendre dix ans d'un coup et de voir ma prime jeunesse défiler instantanément. Cette chanson a le don de susciter la nostalgie !
A song about close calls and missed opportunities. Haven't we all been there? It sucks, but great songs do come out of the experience. Thanks Bloc Party!
This song is swooning - how the heck does it have so few views, compared to songs like Banquet or Helicopter? Apparently, romance isn't among the Bloc Party fans...?!
wow, thank you for that. As a black guy from london and living in new york, i get those comments all the time, if more people thought like you, the world would be a better place.
Such a sweet, nostalgic song. Should have been a monster hit for the band.
It’s a monster in my head !! Been on my play list since it was released . 😉✌🏻
I think It was a hit at the time

It was a hit for me, have listened to it at least once a day ever since it was released 😂

Was the first sentence related to the second?
There's always that one song that brings on a kind of happy sadness
This is it
I agree. The words "nostalgic" and "bittersweet" come to mind.

It's like the end of the days of actual good bands on mainstream.

Shit man, I'm just creating memories.
I still remember her. 14 yrs feels like yesterday, i should have kissed her.
Certified 00s classic. Beautiful instrumentation and production, and the lyrics really do pull at my heart strings. It just sounds like nostalgia
One of the best teenage crush love songs of all time.
Conor, crushes are the worst. I lost a quarter of my life to them! Be careful.
facts
Heard this song today for the first time in over a decade and still remembered most of the words perfectly, honestly a beautifully sad masterpiece.
I love he’s so romantic and the band backs him up
Means alot to me this song. I'm sure some people understand.
I love the bassists voice being put through that distortion... Gives the harmonies a great, unique feel.
0:54 The essential lyric of this song "We left our trousers by the canal."
Yup. The lyric that reveals the song's gay undertones.

I still remember

You said it's just like a full moon
Blood beats faster in our veins
We left our trousers by the canal
And our fingers, they almost touched

We wrote our names on every train
Laughed at the people off to work
So monochrome and so lukewarm
And I can see our days are becoming nights
I could feel your heartbeat across the grass
We should have run
I would go with you anywhere
I should have kissed you by the water
You should have asked me for it
And our love could have soared
I would let you if you asked me

Expertly worded squire..
Now this song makes you live through the emotions, again. Just like that, my heart scars re-open as wounds.
Same.
I fell in love with Bloc Party when I saw them in concert in Manhattan over ten years ago. And I still love their music to this day.
I’m listening to this song in quarantine, someone else doing it? 🤕
This song is just so beautiful, I still remember when my dad gave me a copy of their album back in 2007-2008.
I never really listened to Bloc Party, but damn i loved this song back in the days! 🥰
I love this song from Japan.
This is an excellent song but it is also a brilliant lesson in production and song dynamics. The way the song builds (particularly the intensification after "I should have kissed you..") is exemplary.
This song is a fucking masterpiece! I am saying this as a Beatles fan.
Great band, never got the success they deserved
Takes me back to a time, a place, a person.

This song reminds me of my first love. Probably my biggest love. A regret that im happy to have.
Only 500.000 views, i'm so sad, this band, this video, this song, are amazing, what's wrong?

Still puzzled by how the general public saw their sophomore album as a huge disappointment. Great song btw.
It's just as good as Silent Alarm in my opinion.
Four dissapoints me but is far from average& their new album HYMNS is amazing
A Weekend In the City is like Bloc Party doing a Post-Rock album, it's fucking mad.
I think it's better, deeper more mature themes. This song is an absolute classic and is so underappreciated.
