I just put up drop cloth curtains and totally love them. My suggestion is wash them and time or two first before hanging. I didn't bleach mine. I wanted the natural color that they are. They are great. If you are looking for perfection, these may not be your choice. I am looking for that country warm look and that's what they show.
Also depends on what look you're going for. If you want perfection then yes, this would probably be the wrong material to use, however,if you are after that not so "perfect" look then these make GREAT curtains! Very affordable as well. I have drop cloth curtains that I've made for my house and my daughter's house and we LOVE them. Especially for the farm style look.. perfect!
If the whitening is the only drawback for someone, they might be able to try laundry bluing to get bright white curtains. That being said, one is either going to love or hate the drop cloths for decor. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, as there are a few things I didn't think about. I think the drop cloths are great for a quick fix, to cover your windows quickly for privacy reasons. But maybe they aren't best for long time use? God bless!
The trick is to soak the drop cloths in a laundry detergent that has a white brightener it add some chemicals to it that makes it appear brighter and it works...
Also quite frankly you can paint them white. Seriously you can use cheap craft paint, but I’d go for Blick. Add a fabric medium and voilá. Come to think of it, it would be even cheaper to use latex. However you choose to do it, bright white isn’t difficult to achieve, though personally I prefer pale ecru or cream. It’s easier on the eyes.
Thanks! I was planning on using drop cloths for a room divider so I would need the full width and length. I was going to try bleaching too! Saved me a lot of aggravation.
I'm coffee staining mine because I have a dog and live out in the country... can't stand my curtains hitting the floor; and can sew sooo it's basically just a super cheap way to cover my 32 huge windows... next cheapest option is sketchy cheap duvet covers. Plus whatever is left over gets braided into rugs... cause those are stupid expensive too.
I plan to wash mine with bleach just to lighten them up a bit, as they match my walls almost exactly. I'm also cutting (not folding) them to the perfect height (7ft) for my windows, as well as lining them with some sheer white curtains I already have. Pinch pleating would look amazing, but I already have my fugly bronze clip rings.
#8- If you're going to use them outside, in addition to the previously mentioned reasons, if you live in a windy area you will be spending lots of time finding ways to keep them blowing in the air! I thought the drop cloths would make great outdoor curtains for better privacy, but Pinterest and RUclips was wrong!
Make a bottom seam and put fishing line weights (sinkers) in. Keeps them from blowing around as much. Just be careful in hurricane type winds..lol... can be lethal.
@@mandyrogers6645 I was going to say the same. It really depends on where you live. In SoCal we rarely have winds that will cause a problem. And frankly I either take down my curtains when a storm is coming or I tie them up.
I just found out at today years old ..... A lot of American-grown cotton is now gmo engineered-meaning that it may have an issue as the capability to be bleached, due to its makeup. (It may still be dyeable, but, mileage may vary)......
Wish I had found your channel “before” I hung them for curtains and not washed them first. And….paid a lady to help at $20 an hour. CRAP!!!!!! I’m going to IKEA!!!!!! Hugs From Oklahoma BTW….I love your recliner. We have the same!! Mine hugs me!!!!!!!
But then they cost more than $10 a panel. Really her complaints are that everything she wants doesn’t come as inexpensively or as easily as she would like. There are plenty of solutions to her complaints. But essentially she has different curtain goals than all the 9x12’ drop cloth fans.
@@AButterflyHouse hopefully you will get full use of your hand, it's so easy to get hurt, I cut my thumb on a table saw and had two mishaps with chainsaws,, but they all healed up ok.
I have made throw covers for my dog/cat beds and some for furniture......7 years later......they wash up great, release everything except paint, and get softer with time. They DO shrink and release a lot of lint........so does linen.
100% Linen fabric also shrinks....so does cotton......you don't sew do you? Sorry...you don't know what your talking about as far as this fabric.......any fabric you leave outside in humidity will mildew. If they mildewed IN your house....you got bigger problems. Pre-wash as this fabric does shrink and throw off lint.....so what.....I took off the bulky seams, serged, made a proper hem......they are great.
C’mon guys, not really! Drop cloths are designed to soak up liquid messes not to make upholstery or curtains. Everyone who uses drop cloths for home decor accepts its limitations. If you don’t want to, that’s cool, but then you have to accept that what you want may come at a higher price.
I was enjoying your video up to the point of lost continuity in the B&W version. You put your cast onto the WRONG hand! This means it was only a stage prop and you lost all of your credibility with me.

Cotton shrinks especially if washed in hot water and then put in a hot dryer. :) Cold water wash and hung to dry cotton doesn't shrink much.

Huh, I haven't tried that, and I thought I'd tried everything!

@@rtd1791 Thank you! Will give it a go!
I’m currently preparing to make drop cloth curtains. This video has definitely given me couple things to think of.

So glad it was helpful!
They make great shades.

This is a great point!

100% cotton will bleach and can be died - I love mine - sorry you didn’t have any luck with yours
I actually got a soft Grey by soaking them in latex paint diluted in water - they have held the color for 5 years and I wash them regularly
And here I am making drop cloth curtains 😆 great points!
How did Christian from left to right to left or right again it happened twice in your video please explain I don’t understand it
Thank you for saving me a lot of time and effort!
Thank you! Now I won’t waste time water bleach and money!
Glad to see that You "won" the fight with the evil saw
LOL, maybe. It was certainly in better condition than I was!
Awesome tips Lindsay! The 10 inches really surprised me me
Thanks!
Yes to all you said. I’ve yet to see a no sew version I like. If you pinch pleat, hem and line them they look great but that defeats the purpose.
Wish I would have found you before I spent $80 plus on drop cloths for outdoor curtains 🤦🏻♀️
They do come in 15’ length
But then they cost more than $10 a panel. Really her complaints are that everything she wants doesn’t come as inexpensively or as easily as she would like.

They also have 25' and different widths- Amazon
Mine didn’t come out white either… I need the fairy god mother
how's your hand coming along?? that had to be painful.
I actually severed most of the nerves, so the pain has been pretty minimal. The anxiety, however...

@@AButterflyHouse I’m reading this a year later. Where do I find the hand injury update? Table saw injuries terrify me.
If love your opinion on how washable drop cloth is. Do stains come out well?

Good to know, thank you.
Try making with sheets rather than drop cloths
You want white, use rit dye. That’s what it’s for

I'm convinced!!! That amount of shrinkage is ridiculous.
Agreed.

First world whining.

She just flipped the image. The plant and side table remained on the same side as the injured hand.
I guess you just don't know what the hell you're doing
