    God, for being such a weird choice of gameplay for a Sonic Final Boss. This Boss has such perfect tone for a Sonic Final Boss. The monologue, the music, I love everything about it. The gameplay just drops the ball for me

    Alright so some tips in increasing complexity, starting from those completely new to shmups/bullet hells.
    - Understand how the mechanics work first. When you fire the light shot, the light shots themselves will cancel out white bullets. You will also cancel out white bullets you touch. This works the same for the dark shot.
    - The cancelled bullets will fill the gauge at the bottom of the screen. Once it is filled, you can fire off a special attack that sends out a bunch of missiles at once which then homes in on enemies and cancels bullets in their path. It's not a consistent screen clear, but it's usually enough to simplify a pattern significantly.
    - Aside from the horizontal laser phase and the very simple aimed patterns, I would advise saving your special attack for the difficult patterns.
    - Getting hit by any bullet of the opposite type causes you to lose a life. You only have 2 extra lives to work with here. If you are having trouble with the last phases of the fight, make sure that you don't get hit early. If you do accidentally die early, then it may be advisable to intentionally lose the rest of your lives to restart the fight.
    -The basic idea of this boss fight is that patterns constantly alternate between light and dark bullets, so swap your shot fire accordingly to minimize risk.
    - Patterns in general have three categories: aimed, static, and random.
    - Aimed patterns throw bullets directly at your character. These can be easily avoided simply by staying still while they fire, then moving aside slightly.
    - Static patterns, like the first laser enclosure pattern, have the bullets fire in a predetermined angle; that is why the position slightly to the right of center I take is always guaranteed to be safe
    - Random patterns have a chance to cause problems. You will want to stick to one shot and focus on dodging the other type. Generally I would prefer firing dark shots and dodging white bullets for visibility reasons.
    - The actual difficulty comes from the second half of the fight onward. There's not much help I can offer beyond the strategies I adopt in the video. You will want to remember to position yourself correctly for the horizontal lasers.
    - Once the boss is down to like 5% health, you can no longer damage it, so save all of your special attacks for screen clears.
    - The laser cages the boss fires seems to always start aimed around you, so don't move too much and you won't run into them. Be careful of the reversing movement when they start to move around.
    - For the final frenzy when it fires off walls with the aimed projectiles, you are obviously not going to dodge the masive barrage of aimed bullets, so stick to that polarity. With that in mind, find a path through the layered rings of walls and make sure to get through quickly.
    - There are points in the fight where I am intentionally not using the correct polarity; this is only because I'm trying to deal more damage, since the shots cancelling bullets means they're not hitting the boss, and I've played enough bullet hells to know how to dodge aimed patterns. But don't do it especially if you use the special attacks because that'll be way more than enough damage.
    - I never used it at any point here but if you really want to... you can do diagonal down-left or down-right movement when at the bottom of the screen to move slower than usual. I think this is called dragging in shmup terminology. It's really not needed for a relatively simple fight like this, but I guess it could be useful for the random spam?
    - It is possible to try to cancel bullets of both types by simply rapidly alternating between light and dark shots. But it'll probably hurt your fingers if you do it too much, and it makes dodging a lot more unpredictable so I don't recommend it.
    - I actually remapped my Quick Step keys to Z and X so I could play this fight using Shift, Z, X and arrow keys. Which is typical Touhou keyboard controls lol.

      Especially relevant on keyboard: If you find that you're not able to move in a certain direction when firing, it may be caused by input ghosting, which is a quirk of keyboard circuitry. Try to get around this by remapping keys. For me, Q/E (the default quick step buttons) did cause my arrow keys to not perform some diagonal movements, so the remapping was necessary.
      I don't think trying to control a shmup with W/A/S/D and holding down Q/E is a very good control scheme anyway, so... try that if you're struggling, I guess?

    • @tailsfan11westandwithukraine
      @tailsfan11westandwithukraine 2 года назад

      Impossible

    • @CrestedPeak9
      @CrestedPeak9  2 года назад

      The final two attack phases at the very end of the fight are impossible without switching; the aimed barrage is far too wide and the laser constraints are too narrow to dodge. Your only hope would maybe be somehow rng luckdodging your way?
      Everything else is perfectly doable though.
