Ovf's are awesome!. I use the 28mm ttartisans along with a Olympus epl 3 and Panasonic's 14mm lens, fits into a small bag as my daily carry-on's. Sadly like you said not many are being made. I got my ttartisans as a clearout special and never able to find one again (locally anyway), also stealing the ovf off of old rangefinders are still a pretty penny. Oh well, i guess we're in a very niche market after all..
I’m glad you are back. I was worried I had not seen a new video from you in a bit. A sold all my Leica gear a while ago but kept all my viewfinders. I love using them on my DSLR and mirrorless. Even when using a short zoom, I want to come back to a standard focal length. The viewfinder helps me do that.
Thanks so much for your comment. I recently got over another bout of Covid and before that I had a terrible flu that degraded into pneumonia. Illness, combined with extensive travel, made it difficult, if not impossible, for me to produce any videos. I have lots of additional videos in mind and will be producing them fairly rapidly now that I am well. Glad to hear that you enjoy the viewfinders as much as I do.
For micro 4/3 lenses, the field of view of some of the viewfinders is smaller than the FoV of a lens. For example, brightlines on Olympus VF-1 match perfectly with the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens (40mm full frame equivalent), or Lumix 24mm match almost perfectly with the Leica 15mm f/1.7 lens (30mm full frame equivalent). A brilliant combo is Ricoh GV1 with a 21/28mm viewfinder, which I pair with Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 pancake + proprietary DMW GWC1 wide angle converter. This way, it serves both focal lengths with or without a converter. Also Voightlander 15mm viewfinder match perfectly with the 14mm pancake with a Panasonic GFC1 converter.
Thanks for the viewfinder review. I use the following optical viewfinders: Argus C3 optical viewfinder for use with a 35mm lens (my oldest viewfinder) Olympus VF-1 optical viewfinder for use with 17mm lens on micro 4/3 digital cameras Nikonos Underwater viewfinder for use with 35 or 80mm lens 21mm Contax viewfinder for use with a 21mm lens on Contax G1 or Leica M6 rangefinders When I use very dark filters on my SLR cameras, I use my optical viewfinders for composition. I also use my viewfinders for composition on my medium format and large format pinhole cameras.
Danke, Marc.
Great video! Thanks. I also like using external viewfinder. I have the Fujifilm 21/28 mm one and the TTartisan 28 mm. I prefer the Fujifilm to the TTartisan for the same reason you described.
Wow, I didn't know the DMW-VF1 existed. Thanks! Will have to keep my eye on that to pair with Oly 12mm. I have the Fujifilm VF-X21 that I got for just $30 and luckily right before I was about to pull the trigger on the TTArtisan OVF. Looking to get the Oly as well so that I have 21-28, 24 & 35mm OVF.
According to the info I found, your lens is a 23mm and is equivalent to a 35mm full frame. The Olympus 17mm is 34mm full frame. 1 mm does not matter, so it should work well. www.dpreview.com/products/leica/compacts/leica_x113
Hi, I'm enjoying the video but I think I'm about to show my ignorance. I understand that the 17mm ovf will give a 34/35mm full frame equivalent view on micro four thirds but on the Canon apsc surely it won't match the 22mm (35mm equivalent) as the crop factor is 1.6 on the M6. doesn't that give the ovf a 28mm field of view?
The reflection off the UV filter on the 14mm is astonishingly bad. At first I thought you had a blue lens cap on it! The 14mm lens has a tiny front element, which you have covered with a gigantic, highly-reflective filter. It must be absolutely destroying the quality of any image you shoot towards a light source. I would highly recommend ditching it, or at least buying something of better quality that has actually functional multicoating.
That is really interesting. I did notice that reflection when I reviewed the video. I haven't noticed any problems in the photos. To be fair, I haven't shot it a great deal. I will watch out now if I shoot into a light source. Thanks for your feedback.
I did notice the reflection in the video. I have experienced a problem while shooting, but I will test it in the future given what you have shared with me.
This is the type of filter on the lens. It only has 4 layers of coatings. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KLPM1LP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
@@uncunvenchunalwisdom regardless of whatever the manufacturer claims for how many layers of coating it has, a good filter should never reflect that much. Whatever filter you have on the 12mm lens on the GX1 reflects significantly less.
This guy knows what he's doing, instead of all the other 'street' photographers
Thanks...not sure I deserve your comment, but I do appreciate it.

Seems to me there would be decent market for affordable optical viewfinders that are better than the junky plastic ones on EBAY.

@@uncunvenchunalwisdom sorry to hear about your illness but glad that you have recovered and can enjoy life again.
Thanks! Comments like yours make this experience worthwhile🙂
I've been looking for optical viewfinders for the last few days, this is great thank you.
Glad I could help.
What a great timing for video, i been thinking of getting ovf for camera, might not be practical but seems fun
It is fun!
@@uncunvenchunalwisdom I wonder whether the olympus 17mm ovf have accurate frameline or is it off by a bit? Or a lot?
@@houghwhite411Surprisingly accurate brightlines for Pany 20m f/1.7

1.6 x 22 = 35.2 for the Canon lens full frame. 2x17=34 for the OVF as it is speced for Micro 4/3. It is almost a perfect match.
Thanks!
