@@theogoldberg8919 Oui, effectivement.
I beleive the sheer scope of the music she interpreted must be unequaled in our time. Oh for the days when the designation "soprano" was expected to encompass everything from Bel Canto era through Wagner and Strauss. Lili Lehmann, Lillian Nordica, Adelina Patti, all did this. They would sing The Queen of the night or Lucia one night, then Die Walkure the next. The technique required for this no longer exists unfortunantely. Thank God we had the divine Leyla whose voice was a throwback! Brava!
As one who's spent a lifetime as an incorrigible record collector, I often think I've heard it all;-). But I must admit this gem has passed me by. Now it's the 3rd time I'm hearing it tonight, and I'm still enthralled! I'm wracking my brains trying to think of any other dramatic coloratura who A) also performed Assoluta parts and B) still recorded this in her young prime with a richly colored low and a lovely top still intact and C) with due suppleness for all the passagework! Anyone?
I am sure Leyla Gencer was phenomenal in the theatre. A singer of great temperament with an exciting voice . Callas' voice fell apart for various physical and psychological reasons, but her technical prowess in her prime was stunning, second to none . Perhaps Gencer's recordings just don't do full justice to the quality of her voice? I can respect her immensely, but we all have different tastes and I find I am not moved by her. Maybe one day I will find a recording of her that that changes my mind. I hope so.
Kesinlikle katılıyorum...Leyla Gencer'in özel hayatına dair her şeyiyle gerçek bir diva oldupunu kanıtlayan bir belge niteliğinde. Kitabı okuduktan sonra onu daha çok seveceğinize eminim...
With a voice and singing of this quality I don't mind if she sings it in Martian! I believe that some people, if given gold, would complain that it is too heavy. I rather enjoy these wonders of nature.
Taking into consideration Gencer's, Sutherland's and Callas's recording of this fiendishly difficult aria, it's hard to come up with a "definitive" favorite. Each has its unique gifts and characteristics. To those who say that Callas and Gencer were rivals ....at least from Gencer's standpoint, that was not true. She said that Callas had a "divine fire" ...but added that she felt that she too had it as well..A class act, Mme Leyla!! RIP - Your fire warms our hearts still!!!
What a pity she wasn't hired by an international record company in her prime - she was a great singer, but almost all of her recordings are live and technically a catastrophy.
I was just listening to another of her RUclips vids, this one from Don Giovanni, and she sings most of it full-voiced, and then switches to this same lighter sound for the moving parts.
Actually Patti did sing Wagner, but only arias, those of Elisabeth in Tannhauser and Elsa in Lohengrin. She often sang them in concerts, and also the song Traume from the Wesendonk lieder. This is confirmed by one of her biographers. I include her in the list of sopranos who could and did sing everything., as her rep was very wide, she performed even Aida and Carmen in addition to her coloratura roles. Her active career lasted 35 years. no one today will ever be able to do that.
Yes it is and this just doesn't sound like Konstanze. It sounds like a stereotypical representation of how one must sing Mozart - with great fragility. People tend to think there is no coloratura di forza (just di grazia) in Mozart and they perform it accordingly. She sounds like a pliant and forgiving prisoner in this aria.
I must Disagree! Mozart wrote Operas in Italian Style( La Ponte Operas Giovanni,Nozze) but Entfuehrung aus dem Derail is a German Style written Opera by Mozart like Zauberfloete. For that the singing has to be not Italian but GHerman Style. Gencer as Callas sing it in Italian Belcanto Fiorito Style, listen to Rothenberger on U Tune…that is the coprrect Style for Entfuerung…so did Koeth,Hallstein and Gruberova. I love Gencer she was a far to underrated singer and unfortunately ignored by ALL record companies …THANKS GOD FOR ALL THE PIRATES!!!!!!!!!!!
@tonylinderman Her lower register is terrific, but this version exposes her lack of agility - she wimps out and barely grazes the fiorature, if she even correctly attempts it. Gencer is not a coloratura, and no where near as good as Callas even at her best, let alone in this recording.
She had a very strong a solid top register, and in my opinion better pianissimos than Caballe but why didn't she applied it here? I mean it is not bad but it could have been more precise, she was a great coloratura singer, what happened?
Gencer's instrument was very inconsistent. She had all the elements (high extension, strong middle, dense low notes), and also the ability to multi-colour phrases. That said, she couldn't really sing legato that well and her agility was nowhere near Callas's, Sutherland's, Moser's, Sill's etc.
jmiller05 What? She never sang Nabucco. And how can Lady Macbeth kill her voice when she sang it 23 times! I know Callas fans love coming to other sopranos' videos on top of their high horse and belittle everyone, but at least don't give misleading and wrong information..sigh..
She sang Nabucco in concerts..... where is the misinformation? She also sang killer roles like I Vespri, Gioconda too. She talks about not being able to sing pianissimo after undertaking these roles www.belcantosociety.org/pages/gencer.html And girl, don't try it with trying to compare Gencer with Callas. I like a lot of Gencer's prime performances, but she wasn't close to Callas's technique, musicianship or legacy. Don't be so misinformed or unenlightened yourself.
For some reason the italian version of this aria doesn't really disturb me as the Queen of the Night sung in Italian or worse yet in English. I am much more bothered by Italian operas being sung in another language - big example Lucia in French! Anyways there is no point in singing everything if you sing it unsuccessfully either stylistically or technically otherwise Studer would have to be considered the best soprano in history ;) I don't see this specific aria as appropriate to Gencer.
I listened to the whole thing just because, but it was indeed horrible. Gencer lacked the florid technique, the breath control, the sense of pitch, the style and the temperament to sing Mozart, and certainly not Konstanze. I don't understand why sopranos without a firm, solid, reliable technique attempt this role. Konstanze is by far the most difficult part in all the seven mature Mozart operas, and any singer who tries it on had better have 150% chops, or she is just asking for trouble. Gencer fails spectacularly here, fudging the fioriture, leaving out notes, yelping top notes and giving no sense that she knows the meaning of the text. Simply horrendous.
If she is better than Callas, than explain her EVERYTHING lol. Gencer had potential in her voice that was untapped by an undeveloped technique and undermined by tackling roles that either didn't suit her voice or by singing them way past her prime.
the tempo of this is somewhat slower than Callas. Making the fiorture a little easier.. Gencer was a pretty good singer, however.... no trills either.. (not fond of that at all).
Un grand sens du style et de l'interprétation c'est la grande Leyla Gencer. She is the great diva of the 20th century.
C'est drôle de dire cela de Madame Gencer avec un profil iosono Callas ! Mais que dirait Maria !? Les 2 Divines !!!

Joan Sutherland.
Wonderful!!!

Did Patti do Wagner? She didn't, right?
Adelina Patti you mean? No I wouldn't think so 😂
Orchester etwas schrill... Schade dass Karl Boehm nicht dirigierte...
Italian version is better than German version.
Almanca opera için kaba belkide o yüzdendir :)

What? This horríbile comentary!
She wasn't in fact she was a Spinto, Callas wasn't a coloratura, she was a Drammatico d'agilita she didn't sing as pure a true coloratura
i lover leyla gencer
leyla forever
but this is not mozart, this is leyla
anyway, better then callas in the same aria
She had a very strong a solid top register, and in my opinion better pianissimos than Caballe but why didn't she applied it here? I mean it is not bad but it could have been more precise, she was a great coloratura singer, what happened?

jmiller05 trying to become Callas 2.0 didn't help her voice either
Exactly. Macbeth and Nabucco almost killed the voice off in later years.

Toscanini and Serafin speaking !!!
I prefer German version though...
The coloratura isn't very well measured here, loads of breaks in legato. The extension into the lower voice is good though.
If she is better than Callas, than explain her EVERYTHING lol.
Gencer had potential in her voice that was untapped by an undeveloped technique and undermined by tackling roles that either didn't suit her voice or by singing them way past her prime.

Range vocale poco omogeneo
This aria definitely is not for her voice
Her coloratura di forza is rather poor. Thanks but no thanks.
