One of the greatest and most complete artists ever. She had the right recipe to combine apparently opposed things (delicacy and fiery acting, creamy tones and glottal attacks) and had a wonderful musicality and intelligence. Rest in peace! I hope all Turkish people get to know her, who is perhaps their most amazing artist from relatively recent times. ;-)

GRANDISIMA ARTISTA. Maravillosa.
I had the extreme pleasure of running the rehearsal department of the SF Opera when Leyla Gencer made her debut there. Not only was she a great singer, but a caring person. I was young, and she took me under her wing. I was so saddened to hear about her passing. I hope they enjoy her voice with the angels.
Isn't Leyla fabulous??!! This video is actually a video done in 1976 with the audio from a earlier Leyla recording. Doesn't matter - she recorded this aria several times - and she never failed to have those SUBLIME, EFFORTLESS pianissimi. This was the first aria I ever heard Leyla sing ... and I have been a wild fan ever since then - and have never looked back! Callas, Price, Sutherland were all wonderful in their own way - but Leyla is in her own stratosphere ...in this and so many operas.
Even though she is of course very well known among all truly musical persons she is still one of the most underrated. She should be high up on all lists of the great soopranos.
She is superb....a true treasure of a voice....I imagine Sills, Sutherland, or whomever were the reigning divas of the day paid someone off to keep her out of the limelight more LOL. What a soprano!!!
CARRY ME AWAY~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG...I have never heard of this woman! I was doing a wikipedia search on Norma tonight and ran across her name and how did I miss her???!!!! The great Leontyne Price owned this role IMO....and never since have I heard it sung so beautifully. Brava!!@!!
Brava a la Diva Turca! Stunningly sung, and the diaphonous veil and her reactions to everything make "D'amor" sound as if she's casting a spell. Magnificent!
oh my freakin' god! i keep coming back to this video and now i know why! i just realized this is the most beautiful video on RUclips. everything is perfect, even the wind playing with her black veil is perfect
An incomparable artist of the first rank, One is as always moved by her open emotionalism perfectly suited too early and middle Verdi. She is reminiscent of Milanov and Caballe in this roll. The video is precious. I thank you,
There was no magazine behind this woman, but she had a very strong and beautiful voice. Leyla ( Laila) means night and beautiful woman with black hair...
Seeing her in person as Alceste at the Rome Opera House in 1966 is one of my fondest operatic memories. Her complete command of the Classical style required for Gluck surpasses any other soprano I have ever heard. It is unfortunate that she was overshadowed by Callas early on and basically remained less well known due to that.
Unica e irripetibile...
yes, this a complete Trovatore recorded in 1957 in by RAI in Milan I think, with del Monaco, Barbieri, and Bastianinni, you know, no less, there are video excerpts here in YT and a DVD available, Regards
There is a video which was filmed on a soundstage in 1957. It is in black and white. They may have used the soundtrack from that film in this 1976 color video.
Some claim she could not get credit she deserved since her US debut realized at San Francisco Opera in 1956, (as Francesca in Zandonai's Francesca da Rimini. ) instead of NY Met , Remember she sang in other American opera houses , but never at the Metropolitan!!! Still, "Turkish Delight " known as a fantastic artist and a beautiful person as well. Sincere gratitude for sharing this great recording.
@frsn4 I'm glad to know that. Gencer certainly deserved a lot of recognition, because aside from the Americas one still could get the sense that Opera is a "European-only" thing. Perhaps I was influenced in my question by what I see in Brazil, my country, where our greatest singer, Bidu Sayão, considered by many (including Rosa Ponselle herself) the best lyric soprano of her time, is known only by a minority of the population (even among the more "educated" people).
@Homoclassicus We did : ) Everybody knows and appreciates her, but opera lovers are not many. Sadly other trashy musics (rap, hiphop :S) are getting more popular everywhere which is too disturbing. She is the greatest Turkish artist in of the last century, I agree. RIP Leyla Gencer
Your comment is so right on!! Good grief - listening to this litany of names...we were indeed blessed!! But it makes me sad for the current crop of sopranos ...as you couldn't begin to name that many sopranos. What maybe a half-dozen ....plus le't not forget the crappy productions that they're put in.
This is not the 1957 Il Trovatore which is in black and white and was filmed entirely on an indoor soundstage. This was filmed in 1976 in color and had scenes like this one which were shot outdoors.
@kgarmaker123 for a Gencer hater, you really really like to listen to her don't you? but i understand, she is magnificent... are you coaching Gencer on the libretto of Trovatore? lol she knew this role down to a tee, as you can hear in this spectacular rendition
Excuse me, was this the entire film-opera? And if it was produced in 1976, Bastianini was already dead (unfortunately) by that time, so who played Luna? I am not sure if Del Monaco was still alive at that time. In short, who were the actors that dubbed the voices of other singers, except Gencer? By the way, Gencer is really stunning here, vocally, as well as physically and dramatically.
looks like the dreadful moreno missed this one...phew!!! Beautiful singing, though the video is a bit strange, love the bit where her head pops up at the top of the stairs though. Who is the Manrico, he sounds like Del Monaco?
@leonardovittori1 *while stewing in own juice*: this was recorded in 1957, which as you can probably figure out, comes BEFORE 1960, so there goes your argumentative argumentation

It's so sad. I heard that the audience at the Met did not like her, which is why she was not popular in the U.S.
She is superb....a true treasure of a voice....I imagine Sills, Sutherland, or whomever were the reigning divas of the day paid someone off to keep her out of the limelight more LOL. What a soprano!!!

GORGEOUS!! Why didn't Gencer ever get the credit she deserved?!?
because she is Turkish like me...
Her 1969 "Belisario" from La Fenice is tremendous......

BRAVA!!!! Degna erede della Callas!!!

HORRIBLE EDITING! "Sento mancarmi" is a grand moment, and we don't see Leyla, but a rock wall.
Peccato.... Manca la cabaletta...
