Jim Hall - Careful (live in 1989)

- Back in 1989 guitarplayer Jim Hall (1930-2013) was our guest in our little cozy radiostudio in Hilversum. He played his composition “Careful”. In this masterpiece his use of the guitar as a miniature orchestra is amazing.
The modest maestro, with immense influence, once said: “I find solo playing boring after about 10 minutes. I even got bored with Segovia. So I tried to think orchestrally, like Duke Ellington, to keep it interesting for me, and the listeners.” His introspection, lyricism, spontaneity and risk-taking further set him apart. Hall was highly influenced by saxophonists and pianists. In his outstanding career he played with the best musicians of his time like Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster, Bill Evans and Sonny Stitt.
“Careful” is a tricky piece and recorded many times by the guitarist over the decades. The eminent Peter Bernstein once said: “It’s a 16 bar blues, and if you’re not careful, you’ll make a 12 bar blues of it.” Remember Jim Hall (1930-2013) and also check this new Milestones Serie of a Jazz Legend on Spotify.

Beautiful footage. An era when a mild-mannered bald man in a tweed sports jacket could spellbind audiences all over Europe and the World. Hall was the coolest cat - he knew.
His playing style was IMO unique and understated, often dissonant and yet so melodic at the same time . He was a master at less sounding like tons more. One of my favorite guitarists and I truly miss him.
me too!!!
"Don't just play something. Sit there!" - Jim Hall
🤣🤣
😂😂
Thick Nhat Hanh
One couldn't hope to emulate this geezer in a hundred years.
One of the great jazz musicians I ever saw in person (1991). One of my most favorite players on any instrument. Love every single thing about his playing.
Thank you so much for posting this. This recording has been playing in my head since 1989 when I heard it live on TV. Please note that the quote is not by Peter Bernstein but by Jim Hall himself: “It’s a 16 bar blues, and if you’re not careful, you’ll make a 12 bar blues of it.” I knew Jim personally. He had a wonderful sense of humor.
this is so heavy! under the guise of a mild mannered guitar piece. phenomenal playing and composition
It’s great to see him playing the Jimmy daquisto masterpiece of a guitar ,
Jim Hall plays just a few notes: the only ones that are needed in that exact moment they are played... amazing artist!
This tune deserves a way better place in the Jazz Standards Olympus
I'm not a guitarist, but I really dig his subtle triplet phrasing that he does, seemingly with his left hand. Very deft rhythmic phrasing. Reminds me a little bit of a rudiment or two a drummer would do. He's been one of my very favorite guitarists since my childhood guitarist buddy turned me on to his great album 'Jim Hall Live!' when it came out in 1975.
Yeah, exactly! He was really into legato phrasing with the left hand, to get more colors out of the guitar, like a slur on a horn.
You can tell it's a master by the first note
I saw him at Lincoln Center in 2010. Very old and fragile but what a legend. Unforgettable evening.
Unreal how well he pulled this off
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!AWESOME!!!!!!!!OUTSTANDING MASTER!!!!!!!!!
Wow, this is from another realm.
Absolute master of timbre. His technique is unique and also his sound, so close but yet so distant from Joe Pass's sound.
Loved it! A new guy to my ears who'll I'll have to explore.
You can listen "Something Special", with Larry Goldings in piano and Steve Laspina in bass. Beatiful CD!
Some years (more than I want to remember) I remember seeing Jim do Careful at the BlueNote on 3rd Street in the Village. I remember it was one of the last songs that night and that it was as inspring as it is on this video!
At a Central Park festival, saw Jim rolling his amp up to the Wolman Rink stage years ago. He looked like a shoe cobbler and PROCEEDED TO PLAY ALOT OF MUSIC. Thanks so much for this.
Splendid !. Terrific To See This. Absolutely Fantastic !. A True Original Maestro.
so incredibly funky
This iconic D'Aguisto archtop had a huge sticker on the side with "I LOVE JANE" on it / (Jane was Jim's wife ).
The pick-up was a Guild humbucker.
I studied briefly with Jim about a year before this was recorded, and I even got to play THE D’Aquisto for about five minutes. Fabulous… but to my great surprise, I did not sound like Jim… LOL. (No sticker, at least at that time, just sayin’.) Anyway, that brief period will always be a cherished memory for me. What a fantastic musician and human being. Great video here!
I’ve no idea what the pickup here is. Jim’s Guild humbucker was covered (at least it was when I studied with him). But Jim would sometimes try other things; there’s a great video of him here, playing duo with Bob Brookmeyer in 1987, where he has an Atilla Zoller pickup mounted in this same guitar. ruclips.net/video/vsvan-Q7mww/видео.html

FANTASTIC GREAT GUITAR SOUND, GREAT TUNE, THANKS. RIO DE JANEIRO BRASIL.
18 people got lost and were looking for the gym hall.
It's funny!!! Unfortunetly... Cheers!
Now they are fifty dislikers, it's sad...

Haha this one made me laugh
Ahaahhahahahaja😂😂
Thank you YT !
AND thanks to the person that posted this...awesome.
Watching is Hans style so delicate in such a huge man, the dedication that this man has put in is craft is exemplary.
Were he still with us Jim would’ve been 90 years old today. A sublime musician and a true gentleman. I had the great privilege of meeting Jim and hearing him live many times through the years and I miss him dearly.
i miss him too but glad he was spared these horrid times!
@@djangowoof oh indeed, especially those Trump years. He had a wonderful life and a peaceful and (for lack of a better word) timely death.

Great Jim Hall!! 👍❤
Ending chord, wow! His name is on a building in NYC on W 12th street.
What a great sound
Thank you for posting this. A lovely memory.
This is great! I just transcribed the version of this tune off the Jimmy Giuffre 3 album, The Easy Way. the turnaround is different but the first 12 bars are the same. I had come up with different fingerings, and it's great to see how Jim played it. So, I'm learning his fingering from this. It makes sense and follows some of the things he talked about. Keeping things on same strings sometimes and playing more horizontally because the tone of the string and the legato it makes possible. So glad I stumbled across this. Thanks for posting!!!! I'll play it both ways and continue to explore your exploration in the diminished scale, Mr Hall. Thank you! (yes, i know) and ( I hung out with Jim Hall one night back in 2003 or so after a show. They say don't meet your heros, but Jim was even greater a person than I could ever have imagined. )
Thank you for posting this great rendition of a song I've always liked by Jim Hall. Gary Burton did a nice cover version of this on his 1978 ECM album 'Times Square' (with Tiger Okoshi, Roy Haynes and Steve Swallow).
Thank you so much for this. It's one of the best videos that I ever seen. Jim playing is perfect here.
The Master🙏
Absolutely awesome!
This is masterpiece
Interesting melody and unique style. Beautiful song!
Amazing!! Thanks for sharing!
Incredible,!!!
Jim Hall: Beast.
The awesomest!
So many recordings of this Jim Hall original! This is the first version I've heard that is Jim only.
He made a solo album “Dedications and Inspirations”
que nice blues .. just guitar and soul-pain !
Me da la impresion que es buen video para aprender alguna cosilla.
And to those who find the piece difficult - I did too until Jim suggested I think "Be Careful" because the BE is the pickup note.
A true master at work, odd to see no cover on that pickup.
Thank you for sharing this!
Magnifique , merci .
This is amazing! it would be nice if we can have more clips!
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing.
The thinking mans guitarist.
Yes!
@@Twobarpsi I would say "the loving person's guitarist"!! :)
exotic and groovy
Beautiful D’Aquisto

Fantastic!

Il maestro !!!!!
Love it!
Real jazz needs an element of discord. Well supplied in the right proportions on this recording.
Is increíble men 😊 poco locorectr😢

alternatively Version of "careful with that axe eugene" 👍
Now I know why it's called "Careful." My brain got tangled up in knots trying to figure out which way to listen to this. I was so lost and confused. LOL Note: Not in any way related or affiliated in any shape or form with the thumbs down gang. LOL
think of "be careful"
Wish i could play like this (i my dreams 🔆
Espetáculo!
To the untrained ear, this sounds like what our parents hear when we first played Hendrix; “what’s that noise you’re listening to”🎸🇨🇦
Didn't know J.H got into playing quite dissonant stuff, I've only heard him playing classic jazz/bebop
TV show is called Vrije Geluiden which is Duth for Free Sounds. So they said to mr. Hall: 'We don't mind what do, as long as you play free sounds!'
So, listen to "Embraceable You" live at Village West (third Ron Carter duo album, 1984) and come back to discuss about him dissonant stuff, despite being just a standard...
@@budigarcia I agree, it sounds rather derogatory to call Jim Hall's guitar playing 'dissonant stuff'.
Jim kept growing til the very end. He was never content wot stay comfortable. Always pushing the envelope. Miles too.
His work with Sonny Rollins was pretty aggressive stuff. Rippin’ good!
Donald Sutherland as Jim hall in the upcoming biopic… yeah I’d watch that lol
Clássic!
he just is so sly with those riffs . too cool .
this looks so much like robert fripp, how he sits/mannerism
Similar picking technique too. And both have idiosyncratic approaches to harmony. Well observed sir.
Might look like Frip in some way but that’s where the comparison ends.

Aren't the Dutch weird? They're like quite tall English people... hence their interest in jazz guitarists, I'spose. And dear ol' Mr. Hall.

His strings sound like they haven't been changed in 20 years.
He's Playing flatwounds. And it's an interesting mix of the mic (picking up the guitar acoustically) and the guitar amp filling the room. I think its a great sound for solo guitar. Not my sound, but it sounds like Jim!
Yes, the guitar sounds pretty dead and ugly IMO, maybe on purpose, maybe not. Kind of reminds me of Mary Halvorson's tone.
klapaucjusz1 To each his own, but it’s perfect for jazz.
My sound is kind of a mix between Pat Metheny and Kurt Rosenwinkel.
Is there a transcript of this? I need it.
Que manera de filmar todo en cámaras de mierda... QUIERO VER EL MÁSTIL INFELICES!!
Robben Ford likes Jim Hall, listen to Jim Hall's influence in Robben style.
Robben ford brought me here 🔥
Is this acoustic or plugged in? Amazing stuff
Both. There's a mic set in front of the guitar, then you can see here and there Jim setting his own volume on the electric instrument. Jim has been recording this way tons of times (both live and in the studio); he liked to be free to strum acoustically à la Freddie Green (Count Basie orchestra), then turn up his volume to play lead.
All over the shop with those jazz chords. He badly needs the heaviest overdrive pedal known to metal.
@The Stupid will Inherit the Earth I do. Apparently some don't!
Wheres the bebop 16th note jazz lines lol..Didnt enjoy this piece but cheers Gym Hall
God
If you look at it like this it looks possible 😂
