Liam McCullough is an impressive young man. I wish him the best as he pursues his life dream to play in the NFL.

Thanks for the show guys. I appreciate the discussion. Tim, I think the idea with moving the season into summer is because of the specter of COVID-19 rebounding in the fall, as some health professionals are warning. Anyway, that’s my take. Thanks for everything and stay safe. Go Bucks!

Thanks for helping me get through this quarantine. Liam is too smart to bring this up because he’s hopefully going to be an employee of The Shield but I think a large part of this is the NFL limiting the ability of legal adults to play in their league. By forcing players to be at least 3 years removed from high school the NFL forces colleges and the NCAA to deal with their talent development at no cost to them. Chase Young, Fields, Lawrence, other players who drive money would be making a living off of their skill today if not for that rule. Ideally, leagues like the XFL or the CFL would allow 18+ year olds to play and offer a competitive salary, hopefully forcing the NFL’s hand. That would also separate the value of the individual’s skill set and the value of the brand. What I mean by that is as it is currently constituted, we cannot tell how much of OSU’s football income is driven by player skill versus brand power. Obviously much is player skill, but much is also brand power. My evidence to this would be Texas. I don’t believe the sum of Texas’s players free market value would nearly add up to how much that football team brings into the university annually. Forcing the private, pay-for-play leagues to pay to develop their own talent, (ideally through market competition from XFL, CFL, etc) also allows the universities to focus on their actual purpose, which is education and not necessarily athletic development. This is especially important for universities with smaller fan bases, who’s athletic department already operates in the red without even paying players. Baseball’s system is probably a good guide, although admittedly harder to implement with football.

That being said, as an engineer finishing undergrad, I am allowed to profit off of my engineering abilities. The reason why I go to college is to develop an engineering skill set. The fact of the matter is many of OSU’s players go to OSU with their primary goal being to develop a football skill set. The university has no problem with me making money off of my skill set while I am in college, in fact it encourages it. I think it’s hypocritical that the NCAA/universities don’t allow student athletes to do the same with their skill sets, at least through autograph signings and appearances. However, I would not associate these things with the university or the NCAA and would instead allow the kids to make agreements privately as they see fit with car dealerships etc.

Liam's looks alot like Tedy Bruschi... just my observation. I hope he finds his spot for as many years that he wants to play on one of the 32 teams. I love my Browns but I always root for all Buckeyes wherever they end up after their college career!
