    I'm in my 30's (thank you for calling me "younger" 🙃) and looking at my keepers, they are about 35% vertical, but I can tell you that it has nothing to do with social media since I've never used it, nor do I look at content on my phone. My eyes are usually on the real world (if not on the back of my eyelids.) Sometimes the subject/composition requires some good old verticality!

      Yeah same... I don't shoot based on where people will see it. Some nice horizontal pictures will look like crap on a phone and I'm fine with that. I'll just not share those and just print them. Sometimes you don't have to get confirmation :P

    Complete mix for me. I love unexpected angles and compositions (why I loved Calvin & Hobbs, and Rose is Rose comic strips). A variable tilt LCD is a deal maker/breaker for me. My A7R5 has the best of both worlds… would be very cool of Sony if they very inexpensively licensed that particular patent :-). Was glad to see a variable variant on the Z6iii!

  • @philipsutton2316
    @philipsutton2316 8 дней назад +2

    They should have made two variants of this camera. I'm the antithesis of the young ones you talked about. I've been shooting for over 35 years and NEVER shoot vertical. If I want vertical, I crop. I shoot two Z6ii's for all my paid shoots and personal stuff. I shoot 85% of the time from the hip, so a screen hanging out the side is worse than ridiculous. Love the Zii's to bits, but was waiting for the Z6iii so I could update the AFC. Once I saw that horrible screen on there, I knew I'd been thrown under the bus. I don't know what to do because I'm locked into the Z system with 7 of their lenses. The Z 9 is too huge and heavy, the Z8 is too big and expensive (6.5K here in Australia), but these are the only two Z cameras with the screen that I need. I would try a Zf but it still has that ridiculous screen. Oh boy??

  • @michaelkammeyer
    @michaelkammeyer 8 дней назад +1

    I'm 30, I shoot mostly horizontal. I find even when i shoot compositions and subjects that make sense to me in a vertical layout, i tend to prefer a horizontal shot that gives space on either side or cuts off part of the subject. I'm really not sure why. I should try using a 5x7 or 8x10 crop like you do, I might prefer that.

    I noticed the remote flash use. What set up were you using for those shots? I use z9 and the vertical grip is helpful for vertical shots. Also recently got z6iii and it’s an improvement over z6 especially focusing. I agree flipping screen tougher to get use too. I like your images and style of photography. You do great job nailing white balance and composition. Keep up the great work.

    I don't know who said it, I think i was Peter Hurley, Anyways he said he shoot only in horizontal and then he could choose to make it a portrait. If you shoot only in portrait mode you can't make it a horizontal. Of course you can't make that a binding law but it's worth reflecting on. I like your photos and your channel. Keep it up. I'm 25 and I'm shooting mostly horizontal, but I'm starting to include more and more vertical as well since I bought a micro 4/3 camera. The 4:3 aspect ratio for verticals is simply awesome and the camera has a flip out screen, so much easier to do.
    I will admit most of my Z6 shooting is horizontal because the screen does not articulate for vertical view

    I'm definitely NOT a young photographer, but I'd like to think that I am young in mind and open to new experiences :) My work is primarily published to Flickr, which I guess counts as social media. Most folks on Flickr consume the photos via their phones. (I think around 85% from stats). I shoot both vertical and horizontal, depending on the scene. I try not to restrict myself to specific aspect ratios, so I crop whichever way the image "wants it".
    Lastly, the screen on the Z6 III is something I've ALWAYS been looking for. I love to have both options!

    • @Thirsty_Fox
      @Thirsty_Fox 8 дней назад +3

      It isn't bad, just lower than it was in the Z6ii and other cameras with slower sensors like the A7 series. It's a tradeoff for getting fast sensor readout (required for high framerate video, bursts, etc). Other brands have to make the same tradeoff if they want faster sensor readouts. Some have argued that APSC crop sensor dynamic range values (which this has) gives up too much IQ in the pursuit of speed., while others feel it's more than enough DR and worth it for the speed.

    I found it really advantageous recently, I was on the edge of a cliff with my camera horizontal on a tripod pointing to the right at the waterfall I was shooting (my no water video), I couldn't stand behind the camera either (another cliff)...but I could have the screen flipped out and stand to the side of the camera and compose/take the shot. (If that made sense)
    I'm finding more and more uses for the flip out screen. 📷😎

  • @MikeMena

    I don't think it's an age thing, it's the social media thing. I started shooting way more vertical photo/video for rock/metal bands because of insta! Since younger folks live there too, it makes sense. Plus, not only that, they like video in vertical to so it doesn't force weird crops on their social media pages when they just want to post a bunch of stuff at same time. So now bands might ask for video that "looks big on phone", after a while I just started shooting that way 90% of time.

    I'm not a young photographer, but my cell phone did dominate the early slope of my learning curve. I probably take more vertical photos than landscape. I think it makes sense when the subject is taller than it is wide, which (most) people are.

  • @stephenbodi
    @stephenbodi 7 дней назад

    I have been asked by clients to shoot more and more vertical video specifically for use on social media platforms. It felt a bit weird at first because my 25 years of muscle memory shooting video was horizontal. I have managed to adapt. Having a 2nd monitor I can flip vertically for editing has been super helpful. I also have the DJI RSR and transitioning between horizontal and vertical shooting on that is really quick and simple. I have also had clients that wanted both vertical and horizontal video. Mostly, I have just been shooting everything twice for them. I will be experimenting with shooting in 8k and framing to be able to crop for both. I am hoping to get the Z6iii soon to pair with my Z8 , but sadly my car needs a Z6iii with a 50mm 1.4 worth of repair work at the moment.

    I think it would be cool for a camera maker to make a square sensor camera, in combination with a dedicated crop toggle button. Press the button to toggle between horizontal and vertical crop. Hold the button and spin a command dial to switch aspect ratio. That way you would never have to rotate the entire camera to switch from horizontal to vertical orientation.

    I am in the mid 30's, hobbyist since 20'ish. Vertical for me works great if the background can be used (even if blurred) to be part of the composition with leading lines. Also as a way to get close to the subject allowing to show more of the bust section since horizontal and close proximity will crop a lot of the person's body and have more background.
    Also, just like your photos of the model seating with the 2 rows of trees, it's great to show depth in the picture. Horizontal here would not be as interesting.
    I do use both horizontal and vertical, mostly horizontal but I try both

  • @wongwu

    I work clubs and my work is going to be shown on social media, mostly IG. So I'm shooting vertical photos 99.9% of the time. That practice has bled into the way I take photos in general and I find myself doing a lot of vertical shooting even outside the club.

  • @randombitsofreality
    @randombitsofreality 8 дней назад +1

    Omar, thinking that shooting vertically is the new thing and horizontal shots are for dinosaurs, means you truly believe people will spend more time looking at a vertical than a horizontal shot. In a world of tiny screens, which allows the consumption of several photos per second, nothing about your photo matters. Most people can't distinguish between a professional photo, taken on a five digit DSLR, versus one taken on a cheap Chinese phone with crap "AI" blur around the subject. Nether colors, sharpness, distortion, fringing - anything really - matter anymore.
    At this point, photographers are taking photos for photographers and they will view and enjoy them on a large horizontal screen at home - as outrageous as this sounds.
    So keep shooting horizontal, if that's your thing, unless you think the vertical tiny screen ADD people are your target audience.

    When I switched from a fully articulated screen (X-T200) to flip screen (X-T30 MK. II) I pretty much stopped taking vertical images. I usually take pictures of nature and landscapes and to take a picture of a mushroom or just something laying on the ground... doing this vertical with the X-T30 MK. II would mean either laying down in the mud or just guess it (take a lot of images, without seeing the display, then check the results). So, with the X-T200, going through my older images, I'd guess about 35% of them are vertical. With the X-T30 MK. II I only get about 5% of vertical images and those are mainly taken standing upright.

    A few old man thoughts, most young people, like older people have 2 eyes placed horisontally to each other, this gives them a wide field view horisontally, making most vertical pictures and video very limiting. I've also heard that you can tilt your phone 90 degrees without it exploding, but I'm not sure if that is true though.
