One of Illbleed's fundamental flaws is that the trap animations are all unique and fun and you want to see them, but playing the game correctly means marking them, which disables the animations. It's like they're rewarding you for good play by gating off content. I think there's a trap early on in the first level or the hub's tutorial area where you still get the animation if you mark it, but with no blood, and doing that with the rest of the game's traps would have been a big step up.

Tbf it makes a good deal of sense for Eriko to be the best character. As established she basically had childhood training for these types of traps. Though it does beg the question of why they did the character stuff in the first place if she was the obvious best choice thematically

    • @benvictim
      @benvictim Год назад +53

Thing is, Eriko isn't the best. She's the mario and the most balanced, but that doesn't mean the best. TBH Michel or brainless randy tends to be better characters. Michel (especially if you pump all the upgrades into her) allows you to cruise through whole levels marking everything.
A good example is: with brain upgrades: she can mark every trap in woodpuppets and the shopping mall while eriko can't. Eriko can get close, but she needs some encounters to recover adrenaline. While the speedy ladder upgrade also makes escaping from fights kinda moot. Like Eriko's HP is 250, while Michel's is 200. Not a big difference. While adrenaline for Eriko is 540 and Michel;s is 720. That's for 50 hp you get nearly 200 adrenaline. Especially since the whole game is about avoiding traps.

I'm guessing my comment got filtered but hey, I'm Retro, I speedrun the game and I run the Illbleed speedruns discord. I know Lani Minella and Jorg Tittel two of the absolutely wonderful and lovely people who worked on this game.
To answer a question you asked. Currently SEGA doesn't own the rights to Illbleed and Crazy Games dissolved as a company after Nishigaki San had passed away. So, chances are game isn't owned by anyone.
I've wanted to do work for it but, I've got too much on my plate right now. Thank you so much for bringing more attention to Illbleed. I'm sure if Nishigaki San was alive today he would be endeared and so happy to see that people could spend this long talking about Illbleed as he chose to make this over Blue Stinger 2.
I hope you have a wonderful new year and thank you so, so much for bringing more attention to Illbleed 💙

Oh awesome! I remember seeing you mention this on twitter and hoping there would be an episode on it.
Also, the erotic magazine has one use: If you bleed for too long (but not at a bad enough rate to kill you), your heart rate goes down and eventually causes you to flatline - you can avoid this with the magazine. Of course, it doesn't really help with the bleeding so you're likely to end up in the same situation pretty soon.

Over a decade before Sonic.exe was a thing, there was Zodick the Hellhog, and then almost a decade before Zodick there was Fun is Infinite, Majin. Seriously at this point they may as well make it canon that Sonic is satanic XD
That said, I do think Zodick's design is kinda dope, considering they didn't JUST make him a demonic version of Sonic, he looks like he could be his own character.
My favorite thing about the boss fight is the spin dash animation, which is exactly the same as the jump/spindash animation used in Sonic Adventure 1, and has never been used since, a shame because it looks really cool...

Illbleed is my favorite game to hand out random snippets about. It makes everyone think you're making stuff up.
Remember that time in Illbleed when...
...you get skinned alive and turned into a wood puppet so you can run through electrical traps?
...you get chased by a giant zombie across a lake but then find out it was an animatronic controlled by a brain damaged worker, who you then kill and also turns out to be an animatronic?
...a monkey steals your item by pulling it from the GUI?
...you get arrested for killing three eggs after they made fun of your girlfriend dying?
...it turns out the final boss is your father, who is a purple alien, and you expose him by walking up naked in front of him?
...the farmer raises his giant mutant worm like a baby and after you kill the worm there's a sequence where they go to hell together?
...a Woody parody named Cork walks the green mile and gets saved by a talking rocket just before he gets hanged?
...you fight Sonic the Demonhog in hell (not the same hell as the one the farmer and worm went to)?
...you can pick up free healing items but you have to fight them all at the end of the sequence?
You can do this all day and it all happens in the span of 6 levels and a bossfight.

Obscure (2004) seems like it’s be up your alley in survival horror, with local co-op play and having characters with unique abilities (though some aren’t that great). It’s also a little bit perverted, but I think it captures the ps2/OG X-Box era survival horror with its own mechanics. It also has ideas seen in later survival horror video games that came out in the later 2010’s. Not perfect, but definitely fun.

Halfway through the video so far. There is an item to help the other characters get over their fright called the Shock Brace in every level. With it, they won't be on the ground crawling all the time. Eriko doesn't suffer from it because her father practically desensitized her.
Yes, Eriko is the best character overall, but there is a way to make the other characters viable, albeit a bit more challenging. I do agree that the way multiple characters were implemented wasn't executed well enough, but they did have answers to the glaring issues.

Edit: Can confirm that 2064ROM used the drink as a reference from this game and Blue Stinger.

About using characters as lives(28:53), I went and played the game because of this video and there are a couple things he missed. One, the cost to revive a character you died as is way lower than the cost to rescue a character you never saved, and two, there are some invisible checkpoints where reloading as another character will save you some progress vs going back to the save booth. The only one I know of is in the woodpuppets level right before the woodcutter gauntlet, but there's probably a couple more I never needed. I think the cost to revive Eriko was around 75k which is steep but not that terrible, and since it's part of the ER you can use a discount ticket on revival costs too.
Edit: re-watching the vid and there's apparently a save halfway through that gauntlet? Don't remember that, either I somehow missed it or just forgot it since I only died the once, but I'm pretty sure the invisible checkpoint I remember is for the start of the section.
