  • At the end of the work season this year I put in a new track to aid in the switching out of cars that are stored in the lean-to building. The lean-to will hold 4 freight cars, and as with anything I usually need the car that is behind all the others. Previously all of the cars needed to be switched out on to the main line to access the cars in the back, but not anymore. With the new tail track I can push the unneeded cars right out of the building and out of the way easily to access the car I need. As part of the this process, the switch that is used to access the lean-to track needed rebuilt as well. It still was using some C-channel as points which needed to replaced with actual rail to eliminate derailments. I found no ties under a lot of this track, it probably has not been worked on since it was first installed in the late 70's. So after much work, the new switches and new track were completed and now we are ready for enhanced service in 2020. NOTE: There is no sound on this video. Hope you all enjoy :)

Thanks, I've moved away from the picture format and on to more descriptive videos with narration now as everyone was pretty curious about the details. More to come!

where do you get the rails or do you fab them?

Most of the rail came from abandoned mines or factories.

Wow! That's quite a lot of work you've done there! I suppose I don't know for sure when you were working on this project, but if this took place between the last video, and now, then I'm really impressed you managed to get it all done before the ground froze!! And unless I'm mistaken, the RRVT seems to have a few more flatcars than it used to! Will the new 'shunting track' require a new bit of overhead to be built when you extend it?

Good observation, I have added 10 flatcars to the roster in the last few years. These were acquired from a defunct brick plant. They have really helped with moving material around, even though they are creating a bit of a traffic jam until I install more sidings... I am working on a video with photos of all the equipment out there, so stay tuned. Additionally, I just started building some new trucks which will eventually be used for 2 new cars that are in the planning stages. One car is round bottom hopper type, and the other will be a gondola of sorts for hauling large loads of old ties. The shunting track will not be electrically powered, no need for it as the cars are empty when they are on this track and can be moved by hand (aka the 0-5-0)
