The classic 935/936 cars were amazing. They had lap records that lasted even part way through the 956/962 ground effects cars of the 1980s. These cars were wild with tons of turbo lag and in some configurations, were faster than some Formula One cars. 230+ MPH on Mulsane Straight at lemans was commonplace in this era. Too bad I was not alive during this great time of motorsports.
You have to remember that this was when turbo technology (especially with Porsche) was really coming into it's own. 230 mph wasn't unheard of. that why those chicanes had to be added. The speed of the cars was years ahead of the safety.
Loved that onboard camera and driver's view from the Porsche 936-78....the Mulsanne straight run looked like it would be a certified thrill to actually experience first hand.
Best is Porsche 917/30 ... 1973 ... 1500+ bhp in Q, 1100 bhp in race ... 1.9 to 60 mph, 10.9s to 200 mph. First car to break 400 km/h or 250 mph in Le Man ... With 258 mph or 414 km/h.
Can't believe that there's hardly any armco along the mulsanne straight, very unnerving at that speed! Having said that this is a great piece of footage, still reckon the porsche 936 could hold its own against the modern open-tops which look really ugly and have zero character.
Yeah, they really were hitting 230+mph down the Mulsane Straight. These cars were probably a bit shy of that, but the 917 was estimated by one of the factory drivers (based on RPM and gear ratios) to be going right around 240MPH.
This isn't Barth. It appears to be Jacky Ickx? Barth had a white helmet with a visor, Ickx's was dark blue (appeared black on onboards). What I don't get is why Jurgen is commentating when Ickx is driving? Or did he borrow his lid for the practice session? They both raced for Porsche that year, but Ickx was actually on the other team and got transferred to Jurgen's team midway through the event. So what is the story behind this? Anyone?

I'd love to see the Martini livery come back with Porsche for 2014. That would be a return in STYLE!
