The Trooping is showing the Regimental Colour, the flag, to the soldiers so that they recognise it. It has embroidered on it in gold the names of the battles that the regiment has been involved in over the centuries. In olden days soldiers gathered at their flags on battlefields, so they had to know what they looked like, & each group of soldiers, regiments etc had different flags, as did the officers of different ranks. The ceremony takes place each year on the Monarch's birthday, with different regiments each year. The ceremony has been going on for at least 200 years in just this way, but comes from even earlier traditions. Some of the soldiers may have been in the army for just a few weeks, others for some years. This video shows only a small part of a much longer event including the cavalry, guns, & foot guards, all parading past the Queen (now the King). There are seats which you have to pay for, but you may watch from the street & parkland across the road for free, if you can find a space. It takes place on Horse Guards Parade, a large square in London not far from, but not next to, Buckingham Palace.

The large open area is called Horse Guards Parade, the building surrounding it on three sides is called Horse Guards, and was the headquarters of the British army during the 18th and 19th centuries. The trooping part was where the Escort to the Colour marched it between the ranks of the other 4 companies on parade. Although it started in the 1600s so each regiment would learn to recognise their own colour in the smoke and confusion of battle, it's been used since 1748 to honour the Monarchs birthday. After this part, all 5 companies march past the Monarch twice, first in slow time, then in quick time. After that the Foot Guards Band is replaced by the Horse Guards Band, and the cavalry you can see lined up on the open side of the square, plus the Kings Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, will parade past the Monarch twice, first at the walk, then at the trot. As for the different uniforms in the Foot Guards Band, the ones at the front in kilts are pipers (bagpipers) most of them are from the Scots Guards, but the four with the plain brown kilts are from the Irish Guards. The four men in front of the Foot Guards band in gold are members of the Horse Guards Band, and are wearing the ceremonial uniform of the Horse Guards Band.

Not quite. The gold-coated men in front of the band are the Drum Majors of the Guards' bands. The gold coats are the royal livery, dating back to the time of King Charles II (1660s), also worn by the mounted band of the Household Cavalry.

Regiments are presented with their colours by the monarch and every time they distinguish themselves in battle they earn the right to add the name of the battle to their flag.

An infantry battalion traditional had 2 colours. Colours are flags that represent the battalion. The Kings colour represents the country. The regimental/battalion colour represents just that. Together they made it easier for a unit to reorganise.

Hello, I think you'd really like to see the later part of this ceremony, where the Household Cavalry parade in front of Her Majesty, in the same way as the foot soldiers do - the "Life Guards" and "Blues and Royals" are a superb sight, and the many horses look fanastic!!

  • @seanmc1351

the colour is the flag, in simple terms, its the flag of the regiment, back in the days, you knew where your regiment was because of the flag, to be protected at all times, every year the regiments take turns in hosting the trooping of the colour, look at the buttons on the tunics and spacing (red coats) keeping it simple while you learn

Most countries have ceremonial or state guards in Venezuela the equivalent would be the Presidential Honour Guard. Although the UK guard regiments are much larger and have a wide variety of responsibilities in Venezuela the main focus is on preventing the President being assassinated and suppressing dissent and insurrection.

Hi Fran ,The "Colour "or Regimental Flag ,(same thing ) was originally paraded up and down lines of soldiers regularly so they would recognise it on the battlefield and know where their regiment was on the battlefield, in the fog of war it's easy to become disoriented , especially before modern day communications . The Trooping the Colour Ceremony is held every year to mark the King or Queens "Official Birthday ",it's not held on their real birthday , that last year was November 14 th .❤❤ Ps ,hope this helps a little,it's complicated for sure.

The ceremony of Trooping the Colour is believed to have been performed first during the reign of King Charles II (1660 - 1685). In 1748, it was decided that this parade would be used to mark the official birthday of the Sovereign.Cheers and stay safe young lady.If you like drums please have a look at Royal Marines Corps of Drums and Top Secret Drum Corps ...The Royal Marines are part of the UK Royal Navy and the Top Secret drum corps are from Basel in Switzerland. And corps is pronounced core. And the origins of the ceremony actually go back further than the 18th century, when it was used on the battlefield as a rallying point. Ensigns would march slowly through the troops with their colours showing, so that the soldiers could recognise them.Cheers young lady and stay safe, all the best from England.

The ceremony of "Trooping the Colour" celebrates the monarch's official birthday. One regiment each year is awarded a new regimental flag. Once they have their new colour, the soldiers. "Troop it" (show the flag to the soldiers so they would be able to gather round it in a battle)

It was the Scots Guards who were trooping their colour, hence the presence of pipers in kilts. Although four of the pipers, the ones in saffron coloured kilts, were Irish Guards.

The first " Trooping the Colour" was during the time of King Charles II, in the late 1600s. The Guards Regiments began wearing the Bearskin Hats after the Battle of Waterloo 1815. Again it was a battle honour after defeating Napoleon Bonaparte.

The "colour" is the Regimental Flag, and for these guys, the Scots Guards who trace their history back to 1642. The colour is given to them by the Monarch and used to be the rally point on the battlefield. The colour is considered to be the "heart and soul" of the Regiment. The Scots Guards have 93 battle honors, 44 of which are listed on the Colour. The "trooping" is marching the flag through the ranks of the Regiment so all new recruits are familiar with it. Totally ceremonial in the modern age, but a vital part of the esprite de corps of any Regiment. This is just one part of the full Trooping, the Household Cavalry and the Kings Troop of the Royal Horse Artillery are also part of the full ceremony.
