9 dc in the start , then( 5 chain stitch for the shell style (chain 2 , skip 2 , make 5 dc , chain 2 skip 2)
For this pattern
You can 9 , 9 for corner and mid level . 5 stitches .
Calculations like this . ( 9 + 5 + 9 ) + 2
For more (9+5+9+5+9) + 2
(9+ 5+ 9+ 5+ 9+5+9) +2

For any beginners wanting to do this pattern… it makes absolutely now sense and my beginner brain does not compute 😂😭 I’m on the 5th or 6th row and frogging this whole thing… for the third time 🙃

At the end of row 2, you crochet 8 DC, then, when you turn to start row 3, there are only 6 DC on row 2. 🤔
I tried my best to find at least person explaining and i didnt find anyone helpful. I am sure the author was trying their best to explain, but sorry it was still confusing and not clear. So for those who are confused as i was: chain around 59 +2 according to width needed, dc each chain, r1: 9dc, ch2, 1dc, ch2, 13dc, ch2, 1dc, ch2, 13dc, ch2, 1dc, ch2, 9dc
R2: 7dc, ch2 sk4, 5dc in 1 chain, sk4 ch2, 9dc, ch2 sk4, 5dc in 1 chain, ch2, 9dc, ch2 sk4, 5dc in 1chain, ch2, 7dc
R3: 5dc,ch2 sk4, 5dc in 1 ch, sk3, 5dc in 1ch, sk4 ch2, 5dc, ch2 sk4, 5dc in 1 ch, sk3, 5dc in 1ch, ch2 sk4, 5dc in 1ch, sk3, 5dc in 1ch, ch2 sk4, 5dc….

Sorry don't know how to show you.but have followed your chain 40 (chain 10) + 2 which gives me 36 cm.you don't give chain to make larger or smaller.

It's means . You can take multiple of 20 stitches 10 + 2 is compulsory
This 2 chain for the 2nd row
Like we consider it as a double crochet
And the 10 chain
Is for the 2nd edges of the mat.

@@haniacreativebox I checked it. Can you tell me how many shells and how many sections of 9 DC do you have on row 2 please.
First you should start with 52+ 2 (2 for 1st double crochet / someone make ch3 for 1 double crochet) it's up to your chain length.
After finishing your pattern, you said to do dc in all stitches, but that is not right if you check the pattern in your post, also the 9 dcs made in the last row will distort the shape if you do dcs full. You have not followed the pattern as per picture in your post. Confusing!!!

First of all. Thanks for following my pattern, I want to guide you where you found the confusion. You just do the same as your 1st row where you take doubles crochet in all stitches.

If you add the row of dcs, don't you see the distirtion in the design? Also you will not get the same number of dc from the beginning, it will be increased. Seems like you don't know how to do the pattern. Better to follow the picture of the complete design, as I can gauge from the picture the stitches to be made. Also, in the picture the first stitches should be the 9 dcs then the 5 dcs.... so you are not guiding us in the right way.
In this tutorial She left out the row where you start with 7dc and then continue with 13 dc to complete the pattern
