I was alone in the wilderness with Sunflower when it came out in 1970. I ordered it on an 8-Track and it seemed to take forever to come in. This was the low ebb in popularity for the Beach Boys, but ironically when they produced some of their greatest music. Sunflower is a masterpiece. Slip On Through, This Whole World, and Forever are some of the greatest Beach Boys songs of all time. It does my heart good to finally see Sunflower receiving the respect that it always deserved. I really enjoy your videos which help me understand the structure and chord changes in Brian's (and Dennis') songs. Keep up the good work!!
Fantastic analysis- best I've ever heard about this song (and an important element of Dennis's composition style) and in 5 minutes. Hope you can make videos about every Brian Wilson/Beach Boy production ever recorded because your insight is deeper than any article/post/book/video I've ever read or seen on this topic. I'm still waiting for the day when you play drums!
Thanks for the very kind words -- drums are definitely coming. They are among the hardest acoustic instruments to get to sound good on a budget, so it has been a struggle to get them to sound up to the standard I require. But they'll be featured soon.
@@joshilynhoisington You might want to try an electronic drum set- I recently played onet in a music store and feel it might be ideal for a video made in a small room: a real drum set would, I think, be very difficult to control in that environment- I was a professional drummer/timpanist for 15 years until tinnitus stopped me. May I make a request? "Sandy, she needs me", which I think is one of Brian's greatest achievements, even in it's unfinished (1965) form. Thanks, you've gotten me out of a blue funk I've been in lately, and I hope you can get that book published, though DVDs would be great also!
Thanks, Joshilyn--this is a wonderful insight to assist us in seeing how Brian's unusual chord habits migrated to Dennis' work, which suggests a stylistic continuity that brings it into the "musical mindspace" of the Beach Boys--and helps us to understand musically what is working on us emotionally (which is enhanced and elevated by those unique chord habits). One suggestion: consider (if it doesn't prove to be too time-consuming) to finish the video with a full version of the song. It might seem repetitive, but I think folks will absorb the examples that much more in that way. (But only if it's not too time-consuming for you to do it!!) All I can tell you is as soon as I heard the chords, I immediately wanted to hear the whole song! This might be most optimal when you're using the piano to present your analyses (more "bang for the buck" chord-wise with the piano). Thanks again!
Nice vid. I would have liked a little talk about the syncopated (?) rhythm of this track too. It’s not a standard 4/4 time, right? Also, I believe (although I have no proof), that big brother Brian chipped in on all the early DW songs w uncredited help. What do you think?
You are an intriguing woman with humongous musical intellect. Such an inspiration.
Good news, you’re back. The way you played it, it sounds a bit like the Wild Honey changes.
What a great song!

@@joshilynhoisington Things work out the way they do. Onward...!
Just discovered you. Very glad I did!
Glad to see you uploading again. I'm still waiting for my imported Japanese set to ship. In the meantime, your videos will be fun to watch.
Those voicings, and bass figures played on your piano have a Wild Honey feel to them. Especially on the the chorus.

It is in 4/4 time, but the vocal melody appears in different places to throw you off. I wish she mentioned it too, it's a really neat trick.
You're piano sounds cool. It's all acoustic?
Yes, it's a Yamaha Grand from the 70s.
@@joshilynhoisington cool. Happy new year. You're an awesome musician btw. I know one when I hear one.
