    Thanks for your video! I’m sorry about how it went with your Etsy shop! My story is kind of similar, I had a booming Etsy plant shop that I started from my backyard. After 2020 big nurseries and greenhouses started selling on Etsy, saturating the platform with large amounts of plants. Since then it’s just hard for me to compete against these big companies. I also am an artist with an art shop that has struggled as well. I believe the true artists get lost in the sea of cheap digital wall art that has taken over Etsy.

    Wow. Just wow. I can’t believe they are even allowed to run their business that way… it’s so unfair to the artisan! I bought a couple of handmade items from Etsy last summer and I think that’s the only time I’ve used Etsy. I like to browse but I’ve found it’s not as nice as it used to be because it’s not restricted to handmade items anymore. Now my heart goes out to the artists / handmade sellers on there!! I watched a couple of videos a few months back by artists who said they were leaving Etsy due to changes but they didn’t go into great detail. Hopefully you’re able to find an option that will work for you.

    I wholeheartedly agree. I stopped supporting Etsy when they started allowing Manufacturing Partners. Like you, I used to be a jeweler, so I already knew what it would be like to compete with competitors from places like China. No American can afford to live on Chinese wages. What’s more, our overhead if many times greater than a Chinese jeweler’s!
    As for the fees, you may as well go to a gallery and pay them the 50% commission-at least they take care of marketing, advertising, sales, fulfillment, and customer service for you!

    I started selling earrings on Etsy in 2020, was doing decent that year and then swiftly tanked in 2021-now. I kept my prices lower than they should’ve been and it still didn’t help. After many tears and feeling like such a failure I officially quit making earrings about a month ago. A weight has been lifted and I’m much happier. I didn’t even realize how much all the changes affected my business

    Great information. I have been on Etsy since 2010 and it has changed so much. I still sell on there but what I sell does not have high overhead and it is mostly paperie and ribbons. I still feel like it is not a worth while place to sell anymore. Thanks for this great insight.

    Thank you for sharing your experience. Wall Street happened. Publically traded stocks and investor profits are more important. I ran into the same thing with eBay sales after the pandemic hit the shipping went really high and the fees just kept adding up. That was a time frame that a lot of thefts were going on in the stores and I couldn't figure out at first how someone could sell products for below wholesale prices (which I couldn't compete with). So I too finally closed down my shop and got out of business. I am in the process of doing art mixed media and scrapbooking. I will probably do sales locally and word of mouth. My daughter had a handmade business and she has never recovered her sales back to pre-pandemic levels.

    I tried to open an Etsy shop as a yarn dyer around 2020, it was impossible to make it work. People were selling similar items for way below what they were worth, making it hard for me to charge a true living cost, plus as a new shop nobody found me, the only sales I made were from people I had driven to etsy myself from a youtube channel I had and from IG. Then the etsy fee's made no sense, I had fully researched them but what they were charging me didn't match with the advertised fees and the way they separate them on the reports makes it very hard to track. In the end I gave up, and if I ever set up again I will eat the cost for my own site rather than go back to Etsy, especially since you get no advertising or promoton from them as a new shop.

    Damn, that black diamond ring story 💔 Etsy is now a publicly traded company, which means it's all about making investors happy - either by growth of the stock or the dividends they pay out. I knew this would happen, when they went public. It was the right decision to leave. That's why they accept dropshippers now. A ton of new sellers, a ton more revenue for Etsy, which they communicate publicly quarterly to investors, this attracting more investors. It's a wet Wallstreet dream.

    Art fairs! Of course you would need your own website too - with art fairs you will have to keep at it since people like to develop a relationship with their investment. I used to sell my husbands ceramics and it took 2-3 years of returning before things became more consistent and reliable. Many artists do Patreon and get support that way as well as drive their traffic to their sites through their vlogs - again it takes patience though. You did a great job with this video. )

It wasn't until I started selling costumes, that I saw the demons come out of the woodwork! Holy moly! And it just continued to get worse in all of my shops. And I learned that 90% of everything on Etsy is actually dropshipped from China. Including art. I used to be soooo stressed out when I had those Etsy shops. The sad price of globalization and our addiction to getting things "cheap", not to mention large corporations getting so big they just crush the small operator. Funny too how things always seem to only work in their favor. My only advice is whether you do it on etsy (I haven't used them) or elsewhere build the brand around you and focus on quality and the unique. A lot of the stuff that comes from places like China is going to be crap, often not even the real thing (say if it's stones or gold etc.). Alternately if you can't beat 'em join 'em start selling premade items from a dropshipper. Just my 2 cents, you've probably thought of these things anyway....

    Confused on the requirement for including shipping. I see many products on Etsy that charge for shipping. Keep the faith. Hopefully your teaching will lead to growth and a future web based business.

    • @winterwoodsstudio
      @winterwoodsstudio  Год назад +5

      You can charge shipping but they charge you a 6.5% fee and give listings with shipping a lower rank in their seo engine, which means you appear lower in search. So where your listing might have been on page one, it might now be on page 11, which happened to me. Thank you for your kind words!❤

      I'm confused too. Because there seem to be an awful lot of items in my category that charge shipping yet show up in search long before my item. I really can't figure it out.

    • @winterwoodsstudio
      @winterwoodsstudio  Год назад +4

      There are other factors that go into an item's search ranking. Hundreds of them. Like if you are a star seller, how many negative reviews your shop has, the click through rate of the item, how clear the photos are, the length of time a store has been open, etc. It's not just the shipping. Hope that helps!

    I sell digital art and just this year my sales have dropped so low my shop is basically dead. Digital sellers are being out priced by AI art and people from other countries where their cost of living is 8x lower than USA so they’re happy to make .50 profit a sell. Same with Creative Fabrica. I don’t even bother putting art on there anymore. Why bother? I went a got a part time job this week so I can make ends meet while I switch my business to physical art prints because they can’t compete with USA shipping costs. Sucks.

    My graph looks like yours, just a few years back, it was a nice completion to the home income. The ROI was getting smaller and smaller with the years, starting 2015. I am an international seller, and was down in exposure at some point, it is another reason i couldnt use many other sites as an option, some dont do business with other countries. Their search logarithm is heavily manipulated to their needs. Sad, but thats reality of modern businesses. Take care ❤️

    It’s not your fault that the shipping company lost their package. What kills me is usps holds no responsibility if they don’t do their job properly. An Etsy seller’s responsibility should stop at putting it in the mailbox. If the customer wants their money back if their package gets lost then they should upgrade to priority shipping. Etsy is not Amazon and these are handmade items. Being punished for a mistake that USPS made is not fair!

    I was horrified to hear your story! Producers in third world countries are increasingly being granted fair-trade deals to ensure they receive a fair price for their goods, and yet greedy corporations such as Etsy are now taking advantage of skilled artists without fair recompense. It is disgusting, and I for one will be boycotting Etsy from now on. I purchased from them thinking I was supporting independent artisans like yourself, but now I feel completely duped. Thank goodness you made the break. You deserve so much better, and I wish you and your future ventures all the very best. 💕💕

    I sell vintage items on Etsy for about 3 years now. Used to be only for vintage and handmade items but now a bunch of mass produced junk and digital downloads are what I see. My sales are very slow and I was contacted by an Etsy Rep who offered me my own website, when I gladly accepted, I never heard back from her. I'm not sure what's going on with Etsy but it sounds like they have completely forgotten who helped get their platform off the ground and have become very greedy. So sorry to hear about your hard work for nothing, that is so disappointing and unacceptable.

    Etsy has become such a dumpster. Its also over saturated with third party sellers. I'm constantly having to cross reference if I make a purchase there to make sure the shop I'm in isn't selling stuff that doesn't belong to them. Its like wading through a sea of amazon crap. I'm unsatisfied as both an artist trying to sell and a supporter trying to buy.

      yeah, I forgot to mention that in the video. It's not even just manufacturing partners, people are just outright buying crap from cheap wholesalers and then selling it on Etsy.
