- I will be making a checker board and turning a bowl into it.
I use the bowl from a board method. Sometimes called a band saw bowl but I made a special jig for holding my parting tool and cut the rings on the lathe. LINK BELOW
For me this makes the glue up easier.
Finish used: Minwax water based sanding sealer Minwax Polycrylic
Acks Abrasive Paste and Polishing/Restoring Paste
Tools Used: Bowl gouges Negative rake scraper

I echo all the sentiments in the other comments and have no idea why you don't have more subscribers; your craftsperson ship, innovation and time taken to explain and share is simply brilliant and appreciated. Thankyou.
Thank you very much. I appreciate your comments and for watching.

When a meteor hits a chessboard exactly on squares d4 ... d5 ... e4 ... e5 ...
And now seriously, well done for the brilliant idea, the perfect execution.
A relaxing and perfect video.
ART!!
Thank you very much Tamir and I loved the meteor comment!
Happy you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching,

You are a great turner and I have learned a lot from you. I am teaching my grandson to be a turner.
Thank you James and nice to hear you are teaching your grandson. Something he can enjoy for a long time.
Take care,
Gary
If somebody else made this bowl I'd be surprised. But seeing how that you did it I'm not. You have impressed me from the beginning and I have learned to realize when your video comes up, it takes priority of all other turners, next to Ogle. I love both you guys turnings.
Well thank you grampa shorty! I appreciate your fine comment.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful and unique bowl. A lot of work, but well worth it. Thank you Gary.
Thank you very much and thanks for watching.
Gary
It doesn't LOOK complicated, Gary, but just to conceive of such a way to make the bowl while maintaining the integrity of the individual square shapes makes you a genius! Very well explained and demonstrated. You make it look easy and since you've done all the work, it will be easy for anyone that follows your guidance. Very nice, elegant piece, professor! Keep'em coming, buddy! 😊
Phil
Thank you Phil and you are right. It is a pretty simple one to do. I have been wanting to do it but was just not sure how it was going to look. I almost wanted to leave it a flat board and call it done LOL.
But the more I looked at it I will have to use your word and say it does look a little elegant. That was fun to say because I am 180 degrees from being elegant myself.
Thanks for watching and take care my friend,
Gary
Hi Phil! I hope you are doing well. I don’t know any details, except you are “laid up” for the time being. I pray it’s nothing to serious. I miss seeing you. Take care friend. May The Force Be With You! *✨Roma 🌲💚🌳 💜🎃🖤👻🧡🧟♂️
Absolutely beautiful! This is another gorgeous masterpiece of art! I love these illusion pieces you have put together! Awesome work! Bravo!

Awesome Gary. You can almost have a game of checkers in it.
Thank you Jack, I was thinking about putting some checkers on it for the picture but they may have slid down into the bowl LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Another very original idea. I suppose with every next project You impress yourself, Gary 👌 Lots of advices from You are priceless. First time I have heard about this tip with denaturated alcohol to remove hot glue. I need to check this one and this with slow and gentle cutting off the rings with parting tool. I will test it at first and if I will make it it will help me with my project on which I'm working now.
Great work You have made on this bowl and I can't to wait next ideas 👍
Have a wonderful weekend, Brother 💪
Rav
Thank you Rav, I have to admit this ended up looking better than I was expecting. I used to try and cut the hot glue off with a parting tool but it would just gum up. This really does a fine job.
For sure if you listed to the sound of the cut you will know you are probably less than 1/16 inch from cutting through. Sharpen up and little pressure.
Take care brother and looking forward to your next video.
Gary
Awesome piece, Gary. You should try one with the corners undercut and turned down from the top. I think I’ll try that myself.
Thank you Lamar, I have done some with the corners turned down but to keep the look of a board I decided flat would be nice. For sure try one with the wings down and let me know how it goes.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful Piece and interesting process. Full View and Like 👍 God Bless
Thank you Allen I appreciate you watching.
God bless you as well,

Hi Gary...
Beautiful bowl and very well executed... great tip on removing the hot glue... I've never heard of that... must try and remember that one...
Great video as always...
Take care...All the best.....Andy
Thank you Andy, I have even used it to hold things down on my CNC mill. Works great there as well.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I'll watch it later but I know I'll have to try this one, too.
Well of course you will Josh!!! LOL And I know it will look great like all the other things you have tried.
Take care,
Gary
I think that's the first time I've seen the denatured alcohol trick for removing hot glue. Enjoyed as always, Dave.
Thank you Dave! If you do not have finish on the turning Acetone works great as well. But it is hard on all the finishes I use. So I stick with DNA.
Thanks for watchign,
Gary
Fantastic Gary it is absolutely stunningly beautiful.
Thanks so much Kobie, happy you enjoyed it.
Take care,
Gary
Great choice of woods for this piece Gary, love the sharp contrasts. Always enjoy your segmented turnings, there is SO much thought goes into them, eg, I don't want to lose the effect of the squares so I will only go two thicknesses deep. Desired result achieved, as always. The finish you achieved on this piece is superb mate making for a fabulous result, such a pleasure to watch. Cheers, don from South Aust.
Thanks so much Donald. I did a lot of thinking on how deep to make this and happy I decided to keep it fairly flat. Perhaps I will do another and see how it looks much deeper. But I know the squares with get a bit oblong looking. Same as a tumbling block bowl does.
Take care,
Gary
Another winner!
Thank you Jeff and thanks for watching.
Gary
Perfect!! Gary, anyone who did not see this video would think you made it from a board at least 3 inches thick. 👏👏 Another fantastic job from your workshop, my friend. Thank you so much for the shout out. I really appreciate it, buddy! Keep having fun in your shop! 😁😎😁
Happy turning,
…..Gord
Thank you Gord! It was lots of fun to do and I have been having a great time in the shop. But today I got this crazy idea of moving one of my work benches and started clearing things out. Then I decided it may not be such a great idea so not I have things all over the place. Dang! LOL
Take care my friend,
Gary
Thank you fo the tip on getting the hot glue off. The bowl looks great!
Thank you Rick. It is so easy on my turning before this I forgot to show it. This time I made sure I did.

Thank you Philip. I have always loved woodworking of all kinds since I was in grade school shop class. Many years ago!

This bowl is a bit of an optical illusion. 🌀🏁😵💫 It’s quite…quite…what word am I looking for? 🤔 It seems it needs a more masculine word than ‘elegant’. 😉😝 It’s “pulchritudinous” 😂😂 I cheated with that word.😆 I looked at an online thesaurus. HaHaHa. Whatever word you and/or Phil choose to use, it’s wonderful! I love it! Once again, thanks for sharing your talent and skills with us! Take care and be safe. That is very cool. Reminds me of the cover to the first edition of Keith Laumer’s “The Glory Game” that I read years ago. The cover had a checkered board with a finger poking in and the board poking out elsewhere. I can’t post a link, but an image search should let people see what I mean. This gives the same impression.
Thank you Mark, happy you liked it. I will see if I can find that picture.

Hi Gary,
Very nice piece! It looks like an optical illusion from some angles!
This video came at a good time for me as I'm attempting to make a checker board and checkers. The checker board is pretty much straight foreword but I haven't figured out how I'm going to make the small 7/8" diameter checkers yet. I want them to have a little "texture on the edges! I always have one part of a project that sends me for a loop! LOL
Thanks for the video,,,
Tom
Thank you Tom and I liked the look so much as a flat board I was tempted not to turn it.
As far as checkers I had thought about that as well. You could turn a spindle and setup a router to cut texture along the length. If you have an indexer on the lathe pick how many groves you want. Then part the checkers off and sand them up. Just a thought.
Take care,
Gary

Thanks Gary,,, another option to consider!
Good evening, Gary. This series of bowls has inspired me to step out and try other designs. Your clear directives give me confidence to get busy. First, get the jig made. Excellent video. See ya later.
Hi Ray, happy to hear you are wanting to try some other designs. And for sure this has been a series. I did not setup to do that but it just happened. These are so fun to make and so many things you can do. As a matter fact there is one more part of the series in the makings. Hope I can have it done for next Friday but if not I have a simple little Walnut crotch piece already done.
See Ya Later,
Gary

Thank you very much Chris. Enjoy that lathe I know you will have lots of fun using it.

What a great idea for a bowl. The expert way you keep every thing lined up is the key. Thanks for another great video.
Thank you Kent, for sure having all the straight lines really helped in the lining up of the pieces and the rings.

Great piece Gary. Isn't it funny how we take big pieces of wood and cut them into little pieces of wood so we can glue them together to make big pieces of wood and then......Hahaha. well done my friend. 👍🏻
Thank you Dave! For sure we do tend to make big pieces little just to make them big again. I seem to have an addiction for doing that. I wonder if there is a cure? I hope not LOL

That’s just beautiful Gary. I have always loved the combination of maple and walnut together. I have really been enjoying this board to bowl series, as someone else commented saying such, that you have been doing lately. I will definitely want to make one of those jogs that you have. Great work as always Gary.

Impressive!
Thank you very much!
I recognized your cutting and gluing technique as I have used the same procedure making cutting boards. If you rotate the final strips 90 degrees so the end grain is up in the final gluing you can make a knife friendly cutting board although it would present some problems as a wood turning. I do enjoy your videos.
Thank you Bob, I have thought about making cutting boards myself and for sure they need to be end grain. I make tumbling block bowls and they would look great as cutting boards. I may have to do that one of thee days.

I enjoyed watching the whole process, Gary. Such a nice precision to every step, most importantly, the final result. I can start to see the many possibilities of that one board bowl method. I've appreciated this recent focus or series.
Thanks so much Jay. Yes it is sort of a series. It is a simple process and I am trying to focus on a few of the steps in each video.
There is another coming but a little more involved so it may not be next week but hopefully the following.

Thanks again for a fantastic video Gary. I am learning so many usable techniques from watching. The chuck you made was very impressive and I wouldn't mind trying to get a hold of something similar.
Thank you Bruce! Very happy you are liking my videos. Are you talking about the large MDF one or the small one that goes in the tailstock?
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I'll jump in here on this one, Gary. I'd like to see your description for making that big Longworth chuck. I've thought about making a Cole Jaw chuck, but I've seen more and more uses for the Longworth. By the way, I began my teaching career by teaching junior high (8th/9th grade) Industrial Arts (LOVED it--and was even named IA Teacher of the Year back in 1976), then had a stint as middle school Principal, and then was recruited to teach at MS State University--so I've taught lots of teachers how to teach; thus, I am wanting to tell you that I absolutely LOVE your thorough, gentle, direct teaching method. Although I've been subscribed only a month or so, I'll be around a long time. I'm 72 years young now, so I plan to make lots of wood chips between now and the day I check out of this Earth.
Thanks for all you do, Gary! Your style really resonates with me!
