    My Dad (38 yr retired LA. County Sheriff) taught me when I first started driving 2 things. #1. If you CAN NOT see the person in front of you ENTIRE TIRE on the ground, at a stop/red light, you DON’T have room to maneuver around them in case of car jacking/emergency. #2 If you CAN NOT see a Big Rigs MIRRORS, they CAN NOT see you either!!! Stay safe out there!!

      Another couple of tips for ‘big rigs’ they are huge and they are heavy and they cannot stop or maneuver very quickly. It seems obvious but people just don’t seem to get it! Cutting off a semi will get you killed! If you get hit by a semi the semi will always win no matter what car/truck/SUV you are driving!
      Also, don’t drive next to a semi or their trailers. If they blow a tire it sometimes shoots the rubber from the tire straight out the side. My dad is in his late 60’s and has driven semi’s since he was a teenager on his dad’s farm and has driven long haul for 40 years. Both of my grandfathers drove semi’s too starting at 18 for the military. And then later one for his farm and the other drove long haul for different companies. He’s seen and been involved in a lot of messed up accidents where people died and there was nothing he could do to stop it. This eats at him every single day because he still holds himself responsible even though he was in no way responsible for any of them and was only a passenger in most of them.
      He was following a semi and a small 4 door car was driving next to the tires of that semi. The semi blew a tire, the rubber from the tire blew out the side and hit the front passenger door of the car. It blasted the car off the interstate into the center grassy area and it rolled several times. The driver of the car did not survive.
      Another time a small Ranger sized pickup being driven by a drunk driver rear ended the semi trailer while the semi was going 65 on the interstate, my dad’s partner was driving and my dad was in the sleeper. The driver of the pickup was decapitated. A few years ago on a 2 lane highway heading home and only about 45 minutes away from his destination, the yard, my dad was hit head on by 2 teenagers who were looking at their phone and not watching where they were driving. They swerved across into oncoming traffic and my dad nearly rolled his semi trying to avoid them but ended up hitting them head on. He said they never even looked up but that it all happened in seconds. Both the driver and the passenger were 17 years old and both were killed instantly. The accident was investigated by several police agencies (state, city, county) and all found that he had done everything he could to avoid the accident and he was in no way at fault. The boys’s parents even met my dad and invited him to the funeral and didn’t blame him at all but he still is eaten up by it. He wishes he would have rolled his truck so they might have stood a chance even though all the investigating agencies said it wouldn’t have done any good and he may have been killed also.
      Just be careful, for your sake and for semi drivers safety and mental health, give semi drivers some room! They’re working, let them get where they need to go, stay out of their blind spots and for gods sake stop cutting them off! There is good reason for the gap they leave between them and the car in front of them and it’s not for other cars to fill up. That big gap is how much space they need to be able to stop in time if traffic comes to a halt! Also, what’s with the number of idiots cutting off semis and then break checking them?! Do that many people really have a death wish? Or do they think they actually have a chance of surviving it with only minor damage and then suing the company who owns the truck for big money? That crazy behavior is only going to get someone killed and most semis have traffic cameras installed all over them so the crazy person’s family will get nothing when they sue because they caused the accident!
      It infuriating! I don’t know how my dad and grandpas never snapped and went postal with the number of idiots on the road purposely trying to make their lives difficult!!

    Okay, here's an easy thing to remember about mirrors vs windows. Mirrors are *hung* on walls; windows are set *in* walls. If your "mirror" is set into the wall and your fingers touch, it's probably a window tinted to look like a mirror. You can always check by turning off the lights, using your phone light or a flash light, and press your face against the glass to see if you can see though it.

    As someone who works in a jewelry store, here is a tip when you have swollen fingers: usually your hands are down, that means blood etc. is flowing to the tip of your fingers more easily. Try holding your hand fingers facing the sky, so blood etc. is flowing down and the fingers shouldn't be as thick and rings can come off easier. I've had many times where people put on a ring too small for them and they couldn't get it off. Yet, with this little trick it worked everytime! No soap and water needed.

    I worked in a jewelry store in college and the one trick that usually worked to get stuck rings off was windex. I didn't believe my boss until I witnessed it with my own eyes lol. We always made sure to have a bottle of windex in the store purely for that reason. In my store the windex was not for cleaning the glass lol. Also, if your ring is stuck and it's not an immediate emergency, don't have the ER cut your ring off, go to a jewelry store. Whoever cuts your ring off at the hospital likely isn't going to care to, or know how to, cut the ring off in a way that makes it easier to fix (not blaming them, it's not their job or concern). If you go to a jewelry store though, we're gonna do our best to get the ring off, while also trying to make sure it's more easily fixed once it's cut.

    • @transsnack
      @transsnack Год назад +2

      Another thing to note. If your skin is damaged as well as swollen, or if you're elderly, don't try to yank off the ring. That's how you deglove the finger. It's easier to cut off a ring than it is to surgically reattach your skin. I've seen too many older folk who were too emotionally attached to a ring to damage it try to pull off the ring and end up in the ER.

One of the suggestions is to not hitchhike lol but also- that any time she goes/rides anywhere with a person, to take a selfie with them, and post or text me (or the group chat) the pic with their name and vehicle. That way we have facial recognition with a name of strangers she encounters along the way. This was a very challenging moment for me as a mom. I am so genuinely happy she is traveling and living her best life, but I have a little anxiety knowing she is so far away. There was a really good video calling out that lady with the money on the car tips as just scare tactics. It mentioned about how the vast majority of human trafficking victims are trafficked by people they know, not by being snatched off the streets. Also how they are usually vulnerable women, like immigrants, runaways, etc. If your well off enough to have your own car, it's more of the basic creeper/attacker you have to worry about. So the usual principals of parking in well lit public areas if one can applies. The chances those types will mark a vehicle are low.
    A better tip would be to let people know that most key fobs will only unlock the driver's side door when pressed once, and all the doors if pressed twice. So it would be a good habit to only ever press it once while in public, so people can't open other doors when you get in. This is an actual safety feature built into the door unlocking mechanism based on preventing carjackings and other types of auto based crimes.

It seems like fear mongering as you would need prolonged exposure or at least inhaling for most common drugs to take action. Even chloroform that is very popular in media needs to be breathed in deeply to take effect and it would stop working minutes after removing the cloth.

Walking as if depressed, injured, on your phone (distracted) etc marks you as an easier victim, so does meandering around like a tourist. It may not deter everyone but the smart muggers will go for easier marks first. Size also does (unfortunately) make a difference. If you're smaller usually you're seen as weaker & more vulnerable. Imho as a taller women (some) shorter men can even be intimidated by you physically. I've also gone for the muggers who tried me but I live in a country where it's unlikely they have guns so attack was the best defence. Don't think I'd try it in the USA.

      for the mirror thing the gap depends on what kind of mirror it is. Like a normal mirror is glass with a layer of silvery film for the reflection(normally aluminum but silver for old timey and fancier ones.) There's a gap because you're poking the glass part of the layer. In some cases the glass layer is extremely thin or the reflective layer is actually on the surface which is why there's no gap.
      When it comes to testing if it's a one way viewing glass... there was a case years ago where a woman accused the bar she went to of having a two way mirror in the girl's bathroom and she like, smashed the mirror but turns out it was a normal mirror and she had to pay for it so yeah, if you're unsure the flashlight test is a safe option. Please do not go breaking mirrors in fancy hotels because they are expensive af.

  • @zuzax1656
    @zuzax1656 Год назад +4

    The mirror trick is real, but not always nefarious. Regular mirrors are panes of glass with the reflective material (usually anodized aluminum, but sometimes silver) on the back side of the glass which is then coated with light blocking paint. The gap is the glass between your finger and the reflective surface.
    Cheap mirrors and two-way mirrors are basically like silver auto window tint on the front facing side of the glass, but usually sprayed on. Since there is no light blocking paint, they are cheaper to make.
    The tornado one is because the bathroom is usually the smallest room in the house, therefore the structure is strongest there. In tall or multistory buildings, the stairwell is the strongest area. Often the stairwell is used as an actual structural support in the design of the building.
    The tips with the money on the windshield, etc. are good, but with the money, drive away first. If it is under the wiper, it will stay there until you can get out of that area. Even then, use gloves as it could be dusted with Fentanyl, with is easily transferred into your bloodstream by merely touching it. Same with the objects stuck into the door handle. There have been several overdoses from people just picking up a small bag of it.

    • @catelynh1020

      Regarding fentanyl:
      Source: ohio state university "can you overdose from fentanyl from having it touch your skin" written aug 4, 2022
      "ACMT and AACT repprt that if thr palms of your hands were covered with fentanyl patches, it would take approximately 14 minutes to recieve 100 mcg of fentanyl (using a body surface area of 17,000cm^2, palm surface area of 0.5%, and fentanyl absorption og 2.5mcg/cm^2/hr)."
      "The above calculation is based on fentanyl patch data, which overestimates the potential exposure from the drug in tablet or powder form in several ways."
      "[E]xposure to fentanyl by touching is unlikely to harm you, and fear of fentanyl exposure may prevent [health responders] from doing important work."
      "Our nation's leading toxicology expeets have concluded that 'the risk of clinically significant exposure to emergency responders is extremely low' and accidenrally getting fentanyl on your skin is 'unlikely to cause opiod toxicity.'"
      A number of videos have been posted of cops falling unconscious or falling down when near (or thinking they're near) fentanyl. Although the drug is more dangerous when airborne and inhaled, those videos show classic signs of trauma, not toxicity. In other words, by being told how outrageously dangerous fentanyl is and having to face that fear, their body goes into safety mode. "Mind over matter", if you will. Like if you think/worry that you ate something poisonous, your body will react as if you had. Or if you think about fishbones getting stuck in your throat while eating fish, your throat may start to hurt. Or if you and someone else talk about yawning and suddenly you have to yawn.

If you get hit from behind you have less chance of hitting the vehicle in front of you (which may save you from being held responsible for their damage.) 3. If you need to change lanes you can safely do so without having to reverse.

    Leaving "exit" space at a red light or stop sign in uncertain situations is something my father taught me decades ago. We lived in a reasonably safe town, but he had to drive through questionable parts of a nearby city to get to work. Drivers behind me may honk their displeasure, but I really don't care. I am also appalled by the number of people who straddle railroad tracks while idling in line. I keep well back from them, in the event that the safety guard starts to go down and they need to reverse, because they have pulled up to within inches of the bumper ahead of them. I have had people behind me honk or shout or flip me off for costing them that extra couple of seconds by not closing the gap. Too many people are afraid of offending other motorists to drive responsibly.

    For the college text books, you can usually find a few copies at the school library. If your school has more than one campus w/ a library you can request it be sent to your campus. Also, if u have your classes all selected for an upcoming semester, you can always check out the used bookstore. Ask any of the students getting ready to sell their book from last semester to you for much cheaper than the store. It's a win/win for the student whose taken the class as well as the used bookstore is liable to give them maybe $20 on a good day. Having to pay $25 for a $175 book is never a bad deal.
    Edit: I myself have gone to the used bookstore to sell my books and gotten such a crap offer, I gave it to someone in the store about to spend $100 on the same book they'd just offered me $5 for. I felt so much better giving it to someone who needed it, rather than the store ripping us both off. I'm sure there's other ppl who have or feel the same way. If you see someone in the trade in line with a book you need definite just ask them. 9 times out of 10 they'll just give it to you.

      An EF5 has winds of over 250 mph. The family would have been sucked right out of. They must have been a distance away from it. How many family members would a standard tub hold? I would think a claw foot would withstand it. Those tornadoes can drive grass into a wooden wall.

Also, if someone lives in a multistory building, they should be trying to get to the lowest possible floor to safe areas from the storm. For single level homes, if the bathroom is along the outside walls of the house, close all doors to the hallway and hunker down. If possible cover with a mattress. When I went to driving lessons to get my driving license I and well at least here in Finland everyone are taught to leave at least six feet away from the car in front of you. That way if someone crashes into your back you are less likely to hit the car in front of you and cause more and possibly severe injuries. As an example I know someone who didn't leave the safety gap and someone drove hard onto the back of her car and caused her to slam into the car in front of her, which the impact broke the front of the car and broke her legs in the process. Making her end up getting stuck into her car and unable to get out. Thankfully the car did not catch on fire and the fire department was able to cut her out of the car.
    It is also important to keep safe distance while driving on the road, not just when you are on idle and waiting a light to turn green or when you are behind a stop sign. Depending on your driving speed on the road you should always have a hundred meters in between you and the other car, and if you are in high way you need lots of safe space due to high speed if you need to suddenly slam down the brake. Such a simple safety measure has saved many lives and it will continue to save lives. I am unsure if this is something you get taught in most of the European countries, but I hope that it is also practiced in other countries. It is such an important and common sense rule that protects your life and the people around you.
