Same thing here. I speak Russian, Latvian & English fluently, and it helps me a lot in both my work & everyday life. People who don't learn other languages limit themselves & have less opportunities.
It is actually kind of true that a lot of latvian residents doesn't speak or understand English. That's because the majority of them, of age 40 and up, were studying in schools while under soviet occupation and English was not the top priority back then. Basically everyone of age 30 and less can hold a conversation in English.

Im Latvian too, thank you for making this video! At the start i thought, that Latvia is a small and slow growing country, but when you made this video i was starting to search youtube ALL OVER and found SO MANY videos how Latvia is great, and how our language is amazing. Thank you for restoring my faith in Latvia when i thought i have to move to a bigger country to be seen, but now i will stay in Ltvia to make my home town proud!
You know you can find latvians in this comment section. But i found you. Hi from Liepaja! (Čau no Liepājas) and i dont think latvian is that hard. Im better at english tbh.
Magical latvians and where to find them: quiet, don't do small talk but secretly love it for a short period of time, like outside, found everywhere (literarely), run from confinment, likely to rebell against supression and rules. Also likes beer.
I speek l Latvian everyday, jo esu latviete. Aple is ābols not ābele cuz ābele is koks where aples grow. Lot of peple speek english too. Like if u are from Latvia. Laikojat ja esat no Latvijas.
Scott Brickman Best of luck to you, Also props for that, many people who have lived in Latvia since the USSR had occupied Latvia, and haven't left, still decide not to learn the language, and many people find this disrespectful.
I really enjoy the "Nine Reasons" series, especially when you showcase a smaller language. All languages and cultures have things that are really neat about them and it's fun to see an off-the-beaten-path language get some love.
I want to learn Latvian because the person I love lives there and I want to be able to show them that I am more than ready to share their culture and language.
Well, about articles... No, there are no articles, but there are different endings for adjectives used somewhat similar to "a" and "the". For example, a comparison of English, Latvian and Russian: a red apple - sarkans ābols - красное яблоко the red apple - sarkanais ābols - красное яблоко So, you see, it changes in Latvian, but there is absolutely no difference in Russian, so I really have troubles to explain to Russians how this should be applied, that one thing mean something in general, while the other means one particular thing, or I just say it's like English articles "a" and "the"... if that helps. XD
Probably because in this case, to talk about "in general", we would use the plural. "Красные яблоки". However, I do not see any problems with understanding other rules in other languages.
In riga almost everyone knows english but outside riga not many people do because there are a lot more old people that lived when latvia wasnt a part of europe union
Yeah, that's why there are a lot of guys from India, Middle East and Germany I see in public transport near my place. Lately I also meet Chinese guys quite often in the local mall.
I really sudgest to come to Latvia its soo fun. We have a lot of historical facts. My grand grand grandpa was german but he married a Latvian months befor the war started but he helped Latvia. I love living in Latvia its sectrets and history is soo intresting
I was adopted by a Latvian couple and was speaking Latvian as my first language - that was many years ago and recently when I visited a Latvian coffee shop, I was embarrassed at how many words I'd seemingly forgotten. I guess because I've spoken nothing but English as my primary language for 50+ years ... I enjoy hearing Latvia and miss the language and culture in my day to day life.
My grandpa immigrated to the US from Latvia, and one of my favorite memories is of when he used to teach me different words in Latvian like apple, hello, and pig, there are more, but I was young and dont quite remember the others. Right before he passed away, one of my aunts had gone on a tour across Europe with her husband and invited my grandfather, but he refused because he didn't want to have the horrible memories of when his homeland was destroyed.
Hey 👋🏻 I’m from Latvia and you know,it’s pretty good that people like you are talking about Latvia and latvian language. Your video are amazing and inspirational ♥️
This makes me so happy. My mom was born there and came to the US after WWII and some years in a refuge rehousing process (with her parents and sisters). I heard Latvian spoken between my mom and her family, but she has only one sister left and they only speak periodically. I miss hearing it spoken. A visit is on my bucket list the target is 2020 (for the summer solstice). I will try to learn a little, but my nieces plan to learn.
another interesting thing is that Latvian and Lithuanian are the only languages in the world like this. They derive from the same roots from which no other language derives from so they're quite unique and not created as a mixture of some other languages for example. a rare language we can say
One of the best reasons to learn Latvian is that it has some of the most beautiful songs in the world. Their choral literature, in particular, is fantastic. They host a Song and Dance Festival in Riga every five years, culminating in a grand concert with 12,000, or more, singers on stage. They bring together the best singers, instrumentalists, conductors and choral compostions to create a spectacle of surpassing beauty and emotional power. Check out the entire 2013 Song Concert at: ruclips.net/video/7IFFEO4UD4o/видео.html There are many highlights, but don't miss "Gaismas Pils" (The Castle of Light) by Jazeps Vitols, found at: 5: 41: 35. This is probably the most moving of all the numbers, and one that has special meaning to the Latvian people. The song relates the legend of a Castle of Light that sank into an ancient lake and would only arise from the depths when Latvians were once again masters of their own land. For a people under the domination of the Evil Empire for 50 years, and that became free again in 1991, this has special meaning, and it is reflected in their singing. It is also the inspiration for and the name of the National Library of Latvia in Riga--how appropriate as the name of a library--a Castle of Light.
I'm from Germany and went to Riga back in February and fell in love with Riga and Lativa. Now I wanna learn Latvian to explore more of this beautiful country and maybe even study there. Pateikties for this video :)
In latvian you speak exactly the way you write, there are literally 4 easy exceptions, dz (just mash them together in one sound) dž (you need to know what ž sounds like, but after that it it the same) and the pronunciation of O (there are two pretty similar ways)
Lived there for 2 years (until July 2018), picked up only a few words of Latvian, used Russian for pretty much everything. I can't justify learning a very difficult language that's spoken in a tiny country, whereas Russian is useful all over eastern Europe. That said, I am all in favour of them protecting and promoting their language.
1) Polish also have 7 noun cases, and they are exact the same as the Latvian ones :) 2) Polish also doesn't have any articles. So, should I start learning Latvian? :)
(I'm Latvian) Oh my god it just warms my heart that you try to speak Latvian, but the thing about our language is that we mostly pronounce the words as they are written.
Iam from Latvia - I am from DOBELE, I really like how you tell everyone how mutch ectualy latvia is seenable in earth! You should visit lilac garden, close from the DOBELE is nature park, where allmost everything is made from trees, and latvian shools learn the English from first grade ! And Iam in the fifth grade, and summer hollyday, we start in 1 june to 1 september ! And Iam not that good at English and lots of latvians learn the- English, Germanees, France, Russian !
I don't thought about these reasons, but now, they're in my heart too :).I love to learn it because of how it sounds, they have lots of similar words to Portuguese (which is my native language),for example:the number Trīs,it's Três in Portuguese. Also i love the graffic accents, macrons give it a beautiful look.
Speaking as one of those Australians with strong Latvian heritage, who grew up speaking it at home and went to a second language school, I think it's important to note (and kind of interesting) that Australian Latvian, which comes mostly from refugees post wwii, is oddly different to the current language in Latvia because everyone there honestly has Russian accents due to the soviet occupancy (plus a lot of Russian and even American influenced vocab that we don't have here). I grew up speaking a mishmash of Latvian and English, though I definitely lost a lot of my fluency as I grew older. And while I can perfectly understand my dad who speaks to me exclusively in Latvian, listening to Latvians who've grown up there often throws me for a loop simply because the way everything is pronounced seems so weird to me.
My boyfriend is Latvian and I really want to learn to impress him. His fully bilingual in Latvian and English as I am fully bilingual in Spanish and English. I find it really cool that both of us are bi cultural in that sense because we’ve spent many years in both of our respective countries. It still blows me away to hear him speak Latvian so easily when he speaks English flawlessly as well. 😊
I'm very interested in the Baltic countries and I'm studying a bit of Lithuanian and Estonian so far. Latvian has to wait until I reach a decent level in Lithuanian
I'm an Aussie living in Riga. Love it here! I speak a little, but not much. I've never had lessons, but try to learn a bit on my own. It's a very nice language.
Your latvian is good! But I want suggest some more interesting facts : 1. While verbs in languages like English and German have 3 modi ( modus indicativus, modus coniunctivus, modus imperativus) we in latvian have 5 modi. 2 . Latvian has 3 intonations for substantives. " Zāle" up to intonation may be "hall" or " grass, herb." " Dzert zāles ( " to drink the herbs") " - " to take a medicine." What about intonations, latvian is compared by scientists with ancient greek language.
