Special Thanks to Nauris Lukjanovičs :D
Latvian / Lettish (Latviešu valoda)
Native to: Latvia
Region: Baltic
Ethnicity: Latvians
Native speakers: 1.75 million (2015)
Language family: Indo-European (Baltic)
LATVIAN is an Eastern Baltic language spoken in the Baltic region. It is the language of Latvians and the official language of Latvia as well as one of the official languages of the European Union. There are about 1.3 million native Latvian speakers in Latvia and 100,000 abroad. Altogether, 2 million, or 80% of the population of Latvia, speak Latvian. Of those, around 1.16 million or 62% used it as their primary language at home.
As a Baltic language, Latvian is most closely related to neighboring Lithuanian; however Latvian has followed a more rapid development. In addition, there is some disagreement whether Latgalian and Kursenieki, which are mutually intelligible with Latvian, should be considered varieties or separate languages.
Latvian first appeared in Western print in the mid-16th century with the reproduction of the Lord's Prayer in Latvian in Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia universalis (1544), in Latin script.

thanks
Thank you!
Im latvian
Latvian is one of the best sounding language in the world, not even exaggerating
I was born in Russia, so I'm considered Russian, but I have roots in Latvia and always was very proud of my family's history.
For a very long time I had a little dream to learn Latvian once but didn't really have a strong reason to do it.
Now I'm thinking about to apply for a repatriation in Latvia, and it gave me motivation to finally start learning this language, even if it's not obligatory for the procedure, I really want it!!!!
Latvian sounds very difficult in pronunciation, and the rhythm is quite fast.🥲
But it's okay....it worth it🇱🇻
It sounds like a weird hybrid of finnish morphology and slavic phonetics, where to me,as a native slavic speaker,it seems like a slavic language at first when it's being spoken but the more time passes it starts to resemble less and less, until you see the transcript. Very intriguing language.
Its like hybrid from German, Russian, Poland, Swedish and some new words are from English
If I'm correct, Latvian descends from Proto-Balto-Slavic so that's probably where the similarities come. It is escentially a very distant cousin of Slavic languages
Fun Fact: "Pāris" in Latvian means "Pair".
🇫🇷🤝🇱🇻
It also can mean "some" as in - a couple [of things]
and pair in English is a fruit.
@_ Andrius otrais is similar to "other"
Me a casual latvian browsing youtube :
Sees video about Latvia
Me: Well shit i have no choice now
Amen

This definitely gives me Sanskrit, Babylonian, Sumerian and Byzantine vibes. The similarities with Sanskrit are quite intense both in intonation as well as even some words.
As a Latvian myself, im super confused as to why people are so memorized by this language
same here, though i do love that they are
Well, for us, latvians, its easy cuz wr hear other people speak latvian almost everyday, but for others, pur accent is interesting, our languige is smooth, luke a song in some moments, and so on and on
Ja es zinu man nepatik latviešu valode man patik krievu valodu
Idk it just showed up in my recommended. Looks difficult but interesting
Same
One of My favorites :)
I wish that language was one of the most common languages in the world
Aww, thank you, it is popular, and its easy to learn, but if you have a british accent, then it can get a bit hard
This language is very interesting and beautiful. I love the way it sounds, with the long vowels being dragged out a bit and the short vowels being quick, it creates a very interesting sound and rhythm. Thank you for sharing! I would love to visit Latvia someday.
Surprisingly many cognates in Finnish as well, apart from obvious ones such as kola, mango, banāns and so on.
māja - maja (usually refers to makeshift huts kids make)
burkāns - porkkana
sīpols - sipuli
gurķis - kurkku
sēnes - sieni
katliņš, kastrolis - kattila, kasari
ziepes - saippua
kemme - kampa
As well as Puisis, Puika, Suka, Alus, Piparkūka, kukainis and so on.
Somija - Suomi ;)
Latvian has many loanwords from Livonian which was similar to Estonian and Finnish.
Those are loanwords from livonian language
I believe some of those are actually loanwords from the ancestors of Estonian and the other, mostly extinct Finnic languages formerly spoken in large parts of what is now Latvia.
as a lithuanian the letters in this language confuse me, although i can understand some of the words :)
love from Lithuania 🇱🇻🇱🇹
3:53 fun fact: in estonian thank you is "aitäh", so when we went to estonia and i said it to a waitress, my cousins couldn't stop laughing becouse it sounds just like aita (sheep)😅
@_ Andrius nekad neesmu dzirdējis tādu vārdu, kā tas normāli rakstās?
and in lithuanina thank you is "ačiū", which sounds like someone is sneezing
I love Latvija! visited the country a few times! I 💖💝Riga!
Thanks you, but i suggest not to go to jurmala, it has the see there, but its realy dirty, cuz of people, seaweed, and it smell like shit when you go there
American here! For me, as someone who almost never hears Latvian, it's *very* pretty. It has a really nice flow. The vowels come from lower in the mouth or more toward the front, so there's almost a cooing sound to it. It's heard in some other languages in the region, but Latvian has softer consonants than those, so it doesn't have that harshness or nasal sound. That, plus the melodic tone... it really is like combining all the best traits of other languages.
*TL;DR:* It's really calming (obviously, context and tone matters. It would stop sounding so gentle and relaxing if someone was cussing me out in it lol).
And then there's my best friend. She's Lithuanian, and she'll likely tell you "because it's cute. It's a cutesy language" which I feel is oversimplifying it, but--
I don't think anyone will cuss you out in Latvian since theres no native swear words
@@cesium137oshi5 there is, but not as much as russian language has.
You normally put the TLDR; first, what's the use of putting it last forcing person to read through all the nonsense.
Americans: Windows Vista
Meanwhile, in Latvia: Windows Hen
same story in Lithuanian
No it would be windows chicken not hen.
Yea lol
As a Latvian this really confused me in my childhood.
Latvian pupils/students ever are laughing, when hear the name of this operating system😉
I’m a slav from the balkans and I’m shocked that I understood what “zobu pasta” means without reading the translation
I love the Latvian language so much🇩🇪🤝🇱🇻
Aww, thanks

Me too!
Me too 😀
Just for fun or is there a purpose
Wow. I cant believe a video could make people learn our language. Thats pretty nice
Hehe good luck
I didn't even know some Latvian and Finnish words have the same roots (apart from the obvious ones that occur in nearly every language). It was fun to find similarities here and there.
Those who don’t know, this language is 2nd oldest in Europe
also the Latvian flag is one of the oldest flags in the whole World!
Nonsense. Neither Latvian nor Lithuanian are the oldest languages in Europe..
@@ghriansaspeir2675 yes they are
while it is true that latvian is one of the oldest don't think it can be called second oldest, there are way older ones out there that are still being spoken
Latvian is over 100 years old, but i dont think that its too old, like second oldest
Latvian language is so unusual and strange. Sounds weird, but interesting.
Either it looks like Polish, or Finnish. So cool!
Latvian sounds a thousand times better than does Lithuanian and the flag is also very elegant.
Wow it's my first time to hear this Language!
Well yea our contry is very small. It has a population less then 2 million
HAHAA HI FROM LATVIA
Such a beautiful language
Knife got me..
Awesome! My mom is a Latvian-born Russian, but I have a friend whose mom speaks Latvian, so I’ll try to show her.
So your mom doesn't speak latvian?
Hi! Sveiki!

I'm from Poland idk why i watching this xd but its nice
Latvian is TOTALLY diffrent than Polish
Latvian is a cool language.
Aww, thank you
Nooo i'm from Latvia and i talk in Russian cuz latvian is bad
I was born in Ashqelon, Isreal. But I was raised in Ontario, Canada. I am of Eastern European decent. My mother is from Uman, Ukraine but was raised in Salihorsk, Belarus. My father was born and raised in Moscow, Russia.
So I grew up speaking Russian and didn't learn how to speak English until I moved to Canada. I was listening very intently to this and noticed how a few words sound a little Russian too.
For example, I noticed this when the gentleman was pronouncing the word "shower" in Russian it's also "Душ" (Dush) the same for "corn" in Russian it's also "Кукуруза" (Kukuruza) but in Latvian that was the translation for "sweet corn" in Russian we say "сладкая кукуруза" (sladkaya kukuruza) it's nice noticing the similarities in different languages.
It sound really like scandinavian but has a slavic touch to it
I'm from Latvia🇱🇻😊
Some Indonesians used word tante with same meaning and it is inheritence from Dutch.
Beautiful language 🇲🇦❤️
It seems to have a few germanic loanwords. The words for shower, credit card, brown, yes, comb. aunt, child? , Uncle?, beer (ale)?
There are too many germanic loanwords due to long history with Germans and Swedes, such as - Jā, brūns, Purpura, Lillā, Violets, Rozā, telefons, ziepes, ķemme, katliņš, kastrolis, ķiploks, bumbieri, plūme, burkāns, sīpols, kartupelis, zēns, tante, onkulis, opis, oma, pūķis, piparkūkas, bikses etc.
Alus and Bērns as I remember were native words.
rit - утро.
dien - день.
vakar - вечер.
nakti - night/ночь.
zalš - зелёный.
dzeltens - жёлтый.
zils - синий.
balts - белый.
sirmus -серый.
Я прекрасно знаю про балто-славик и т.д. просто к сведению.
This is so similar to Proto-indo-european! Wow! 😍
that's bc latvian is the second most closely related language to sanskrit;
I feel a bit retarted when listening to my own language. PS he's voice is so smooth I have the feeling a teacher is standing next to him ready to punish him for wrong name pronouncement.
Es dzīvoju Latvijā! (I live in Latvia)
Never say knife in Latvian in Germany
omgggggggg, its "Nazis" lol
Kinaif
They pronounce 'z' differently, so many people wouldn't recognize.
*laughs in latvian* :D
same thing with hairbrush in Russia :D
Was listening to a latvian song and my first thought was: is this song played backwards? And really, to me latvian just sounds like speaking backwards lol
I've seen a lot of people saying they wanna learn Latvian, ya'll guys need any help?
thought of the same things lol

Do not look at how “knife” is spelled in Latvian, worst mistake of my life
Omg, someone actually did my native language! this is so cool!
random translation - ''cartoon'' in latvian is ''multene''
"multfilma'' xd
Beautiful language❤️
Aww, thanks
Jokaini plato "e" un "ē" lasa. Un mazliet kaut kā intonācija neriktīga.
The speaker sometimes pronounces some normal vowels with long intonation (not for ā, ē, ī, ō, and ū) and sometimes with short intonation. Which one is correct?
It depends where is the wovel located. And some words just have changed theough the history, to pronounce longer.
Stressed vowels are usually longer tahn unstressed
So stressed a is longer than unstressed a, it could be just as long as unstressed ā this dependson the speaker, but it shouldnt be longer
Also long o is rarely written in modern latvian unfortunately. Some people still hold on to it, but in mordern times O means both uo, ó and ô
What they said!
Also, Latvian spelling isn't 100% phonemic when it comes to vowels. The letter o indicates short _and_ long [ɔ] (in loan words) and also the diphthong [uɔ] (in native Latvian words).
Plus there are two "e" phonemes, [ɛ/ɛ:] and [æ/æ:] which are both written e/ē, so you may be hearing that inconsistency.
Also also, short vowels can become extra-short or get dropped in certain prosodic positions, kind of like what happened historically in Russian with ъ and ь.
Can you give example where you heard it? I can tell the letter 'o' can be pronounced 'ō', 'o' and 'uo'. Others like 'a', 'i', etc. should be like 'a', 'i' (short)
Sounds like an Estonian speaking Lithuanian.
Clicked as soon as I could
seems like there are a lot of S's in the usage of Latvian
It sounds pretty cute. I like it more than lithuanian.
Im latvian so this sounds normal :).
Kruti ir tikuntā!
О а ты по русски говоришь?
"Bikses tam bija" (Pants where?)
Swedish: Byxor (Pants)
Polish: tam byly (where)
"rokas" slavic: reka (hand)
Hey I'm Latvian ✌
Paldies, ka parādījāt manu valsts valodu!
What does that mean🤔
@@abderrahmane7577 Thank you, that you showed the language of my country.
@@abderrahmane7577 It means, Thanks, for showing our language!
"onion" latvian: sipols "twents" (my Dutch local dialect from the Twente region) : siepels
There are lot of germanic loanwords in latvian
Sīpols (ī=II)
Spanish: Cebolla
Germanic loanwords in Latvian come from Low German, Middle Low German (which was lingua franca of the Hanseatic league) and Low Saxon (Eatern Holland). That's due to ruling class being from those regions for centuries after conquering this region in Northern Crusades and close trade relations.
I’m Latvian
Sounds similar to žemaitean but with longer vowels.
It reminds me of Sanskrit and Latin to be honest
Don’t search up sharp knife in Latvian
Sounds similar to Russian, especially with the numbers. Hopefully that’ll make learning it easier for me since I learned Russian a few years ago and will be moving to Latvia next year!
the word "atā" is similar in portuguese "até", the same meaning
Brazilian soaps would explain the use here.
"knife" was a bombshell and a half lmfao
Nauris you sounded so pleasant ❤️
Wonderful
Labs video! Good video
Latvians could use "uo" as a different letter, insted of "o" for both situations. Prove me wrong, but even our president have totaly wrong pronounciation for most of "o" containing words - no wonder about this guy, who'se voice we can hear, or many other natives.
Im glad that people who made Latgalian typing/spelling/writing ( idk how it's called) made it correct, that language have both "o" and "uo", same as Lithuanians do.
Agreed! However as a Latvian, I can say that Latvians are dialectial nazis, meaning that If you don’t speak Riga dialect or near, then you’re speaking wrong, and sometimes will get insulted by that. Yes there are dialects where they exaggerate oh and uo sounds in Latvia. And It Doesn’t mean that president speaks wrong...
This “uo“ instead of „o“ makes this sound like some speaks it with Russian accent.
As a latvian learner I can confirm that damn o is an absolute pain
Well, while it would be better to separate all of the o sounds, uo wouldn't work because there can't be a two letter, letter.
I am latvian
Paldies:)
Звучит как смесь испанского и финского
I love you
Grapefruit is pampelmūze in Latvian.

For me sounds so finno ugric
I have never thought of it before, but now I wonder what it must have been like to manage a country with so many different languages, like the Soviet Union did. Or was everybody forced to communicate in Russian?
im Latvian and from what ive heard from my parents they used Latvian while speaking to friends(from Latvia) or relatives, but when going to school or work they spoke russian.
They had to speak Russian, in Latvia they couldn't even speak Latvian in school
Russian was made the main language - everything important happened in Russian.
@@gih-hun_lover nah bruh
