The more of it i see the more i like it! I just hope by some miracle this ship to be the candidate for future Greek frigate instead of -Freedom Class- LCS variant! A proper steel made, sturdy and seaworthy frigate! Especially in the FF4923 version, its a great deal!
Lcs are great ships if seen as a corvette, which is really what they are, the work pretty well. A lot of the hate that comes with the lcs is that the lcs replaced our more powerful frigates which wasn't right since the lcs can't take a role of a frigate but it definitely can take a role of a corvette pretty well.
I would like to see a slightly lengthened version with more room to grow, power generation, higher VLS count and multi role modularity. Even as is this is an excellent, affordable, durable alternative to the overpriced and over complicated alternatives on offer such as FREM.
Would have been better than the LCS. Criminal waste of money. Wholesale dispose all of the LCS to friendly small navies and perhaps some to the coast guard need to build new middle cruisers like those envisioned in the 2000s ASAP!
Let's keep in mind that the NSC was not designed under NVR. So, like the LCS, there will be growing pains to navalise the platform and qualify it for shock. Ship will also need a new combat system to replace CGC2 and a new C4I suite to replace Reacue 21. The ship also has limited compartmentalization which would have to be resolved. Beyond that, the engineering plant is awesome. My points should not disqualify the WMSL 750 from consideration.
I agree these ships were built to survive in a low threat environment. I take that to mean ABS standard and not meant to go in harms way, upgrade to a NAVSEA/SUPSHIP would be a issue
The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard each have particular requirements, yes. But the choice of capabilities, resistance to shock and Ability to carry out different missions will also depend on the per-unit cost and timelines to build. Conceivably the U.S. Navy could load This planned frigate with many capabilities, but if it is too costly or takes too long to build & test, then hard choices have to be made. It is important for the U.S. Navy to get moving on this-with the mature understanding there is no such thing as the ultimate dream vessel.

Sure, it is not the best, but lets be realistic: Is the navy ever going to adopt a foreign design? Likely not. Is the navy going to risk using the LCS platform? Unless, stupid corrupt politicians win, no. Is the navy going to consider adopting a platform that has a few flaws but already has proven to be feasible and that works? Yes. The National Security Cutter was made with the capability to add more weapons in war time. It was designed to be VLS capable, and also to have to ability to mount harpoon SSMs and advanced sonar in case they were needed in wartime to protect the navy. I honestly think that the NSC type design is the best option in this competition. It may not be the best possible choice, but of the options layed out, I would much rather have the NSC than a repeat of the LCS

i dont like it, they should go for a already purpose built fregate, this ship is good enough for coastguard duties but for war you need something else. I would like to see a AEGIS compatible fregate like the F100 Alvaro type
I disagree any ship that can operate in the Bering Sea can operate anywhere I was in the Coast Guard for many years I don't ever remember seeing too many navy ships in that part of the world that's rough the weather is unforgiving it's cold and it's Coast Guard territory that's where we operate just watch Deadliest Catch I remember being in places like Dutch Harbor in the early 1980s when no one ever heard of the place we operated they're constantly and still do today. A ship designed to operate there is tough enough to operate anywhere I would love to see one of LCS ships operating in the aleutians not going to happen.
I agree I don't know why we went to Italy and had to completely rebuild it to the Constitution class when Navantia had everything right out of the box.
If only they could turn this into an extremely fast hybrid-electric design using two smaller high efficiency gas turbines, eliminating the diesels, increasing its speed, and range. This would open its capability to use electromagnetic rail gun technology for the future. Also, clean up the hull to make it more low observable.
@@_R-R That's why you use super high RPM generators directly coupled to the turbine. They run only when needed, and the main battery stores all the power. The hybrid/turbo-electric design, means it runs on electric motors, and not through a transmission system. Two of the primary reasons the existing AGT-1500 is inefficient is when it has to run at lower rpm during shifting, and tons of mechanical losses in the transmission. Electric drive also allows it to run extremely quiet when needed.
These Coast Guard cutters are already too expensive. Great capability for a coast guard, but upgrading to US Navy standards would cost more and building enough of them wouldnt negate the fact.

Pure gas turbine propulsion will always have a short range. GTs are efficient at high rpms; increasing fuel consumption.
