I want to reduce the pain from my arthritis. I want to dance. I want to walk for more than 30 minutes. I want to go camping. I want to be strong enough to walk my new dog who doesn’t walk well on leash yet. I want to LIVE. Wish me luck!

This. 🙌 The poster that said something like, "no matter what body type you have, you're still beautiful and worthy of respect" etc etc, is right. You dont need to be ashamed and shouldnt be treated poorly due to weight. That I would consider fatphobic. But worth at every size =/= health at every size. Health at every size doesnt really exist. The only way I could see HAES meaning anything would be if you think of "health" as a verb and not a noun. Maybe youre 400 lbs and have just begun your health journey, eating clean but you're still big cuz you have a lot of weight to lose. You cant just look at a person once and know if theyre living a healthy life or not, because weight loss takes time. At the same time, though, you cant say someone a couple hundred pounds overweight is as healthy or healthier than someone who has much less body fat. If you're young and morbidly obese, or just haven't been obese long enough to have experienced any symptoms of obesity related diseases, then you're lucky for now. But it won't stay that way forever. We're talking about evidence based knowledge and scientific data when talking about health, not an individual's personal perception of their own health and anecdotal accounts. Compare it to the evidence on smoking causing cancer. Consider someone who was a smoker that didnt develop lung cancer, COPD etc, because they quit. That's great, but that didn't make them a healthy smoker. Smoking isnt healthy. Processed food isnt healthy. Added sugar isn't healthy. Trans fats aren't healthy. Etc. Obesity is caused by these diets.

I believe we should view it just as any other disease. If a high blood pressure patient has a recurrences of symptoms then the doctor tries a new treatment. If an obesity patient loses weight but then gains it back the doctor should simply try a new treatment.
The success rate is low for a lot of conditions. Particularly substance abuse. Doesn't mean you stop trying.

Diets only work as long as you are working at it; I've lost a significant amount of weight (165lb>125lb) and I have to keep a close eye on my weight to keep it that low. Weigh myself every morning - logging either lowest/identical weight or whatever my weight is after a week of not seeing a lowest number. If my "lowest" weights in a week exceed 127, I go back to counting calories in a deficit until I see 125 again. I also count calories for maintenance to keep it relatively stable, but I don't beat myself up if I overeat a few hundred calories in a restaurant -- I just cut the day before and after a little.

I don't even mind that they're using her to promote body positivity, but they need to get their facts straight. She did have an eating disorder related to society's rigid beauty standards, among other things, and could definitely have benefitted from some of that "love the skin your in" stuff. They could say "This celebrity needed body positivity," or "Some of the most beautiful women are shamed for their curves" and... it would be true, or at least based on facts. But she wasn't fat, and anyone who's actually SEEN something she acted in, modeled or sang would know that. Most of her content is public domain and thus free on RUclips. There's no excuse to not watch "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" before claiming Marilyn was plus-size.

I have broader shoulders than most girls do, and am tall so naturally I do look bigger than most girls. I think that body positivity in general is a good thing though, and you should love yourself enough to lose weight. There's no reason that you shouldn't be able to feel confident while trying to turn yourself into a healthier person. I don't hate on anyone, I try to help and encourage them. Not every fat person wants to make an excuse or bully other people. Yes there are a lot out there that do and I think deep down someone hurt them, or they were raised into it, whatever the excuse is; any excuse isn't a good one, and we should try to take care of ourselves. - from a fat person trying to better themselves

I just wanted to thank you for changing my views on my obesity. I used to see my weight/body like all these women and because of your honesty and mindset about obesity I changed my diet and I am actually working out 4-5 times a week. I am 21 and was diagnosed with type 2. I was so defeated and you made me change my life around. Lost 20 pounds and I feel so much better and I can move way more freely. Again, thank you so much xx

I think one thing that these body/fat positive people don't understand that you can be pretty and unhealthy, that yes, you do deserve human rights and shouldn't be shamed and mistreated. But being called unhealthy because you're obese, and therefore unhealthy, is not shaming.
I am body positive myself because I think I deserve to be in peace with myself and love myself no matter how I look. But loving yourself means taking care of yourself. Overeating and abandoning your health is dangerous and careless.you wouldn't treat a person that you love and care for bad, would you?

The MOST important thing you said in this video is that they take advantage of vulnerable people. At 17 I gained a massive amount of weight due to trauma. Instead of working through that trauma I was told by the FA community that it was okay and to embrace my obesity.
I did not need to be told it was okay to be fat, I needed to be told I was going to be okay and that my trauma did not define me.
Now 23, and at a healthy weight and that is thanks to people like you who are spreading the message of health and wellness.

Argument two “Weight loss has a low success right so why try”
One of these things is not like the other. Like I understand what they mean by not being lazy, but you can crush one part of your life but still suck at others. I hate when they say that too. I lost 95 pounds over a period of 3 years...and I was only 15 (with a BMI of 36) when I started. I did it all on my own...my other family members were, and still are, obese, so I didn’t even have emotional support. I just ate less, and moved more, it was that simple. I was a teen, so I didn’t have money to join a gym or buy fancy diet food. I had to go home and learn to resist temptation on my own while the rest of my family gorged on delicious fattening foods. It took 3 years to finally lose all that weight, because I failed many times and gave in to temptation, BUT I always got back on track and I never gave up. I’m 36 now, and I am still slender. You have to really want it, there are literally no excuses. If you live alone, then it shouldn’t be as difficult, atleast you don’t have to be around bad foods, just keep low-calorie healthy food at home. I was diagnosed with PCOS, pre-diabetes and asthma as a teen too, and they vanished after I lost weight.

The doctor told him he has one foot in the grave and one out. He moved to Oklahoma and gained the 120 plus back. He didn't want to be around someone that would make him take meds and help him be healthy and welp he died 8 months of being there before his 41st birthday. 2 years ago I was walking along the beach with a friend and a complete stranger on his bike leaned over to me and said “Fatty, fatty.” It destroyed me.
But, it set off a fire in me. For a year and and three quarters I worked on my mental health. Knowing that if I tried to diet I wouldn’t get very far. I did start eating healthier and joined a gym. But, I would binge daily as it had also become a habit and addiction.
I learnt that I didn’t need to eat my emotions and gave myself time to work through the pain I was feeling.
Eventually I got to a place where I felt able to start losing weight. Which was 4 months ago and I’ve lost 4 Stone and 1 pound! Which is 57 pounds. 🥳

I am a fat girl too. I do work out and watch what I eat, but it definitely needs to be better. I have been struggling so bad with anxiety and depression in the past year that I had basically given up on my weight loss. I went to my doctor last week and she got brutally honest with me about my weight loss. She told me that I cannot do this on my own and at this point I need weight loss surgery to save my life... SAVE MY LIFE. I, of course started crying and she thought I was mad at her and offended. But I wasn’t. I am just disappointed in myself. I don’t want to die. I actually emailed her and thanked her for being so honest with me. I do appreciate her. It has been the kick in the ass that I needed. I have been using My Fitness Pal since then to log my food. It has been helping me pay more attention to what I put in my body. The thing about most fat people, is that when we hear things like that, we take offense because it is easier than taking responsibility. But we have to, but each of us have to do it in our own time. The sad thing about fat people is that they, understandably, get tired of being made conscious of their weight by people over and over again. The only problem is that, at that point, they take everything, even the facts!- as a attack.
I often see fat people online classically go, "you don't care about my health, it's all about a bad beauty standard," when in reality, many people do fear the medical consequences. I hate the beauty standard thing they bring up especially, because imo, if your beautiful, your weight likely wont change that. But it isnt about beauty, it's about well being.
Personally, I'm pretty average, not skinny, not fat, yet I always feel best (emotionally and physically) when I'm active and healthy. When we see someone who clearly isnt either of those, it naturally causes concern (even towards anorexic people.)

As somebody who was once “The Chubby Girl” (before fat acceptance was a thing), I get their mentality. I felt so self conscious, constantly being judged, like my body and clothing was constantly under scrutiny and I just wasn’t good enough. But looking back that mindset was coming from me. There was the occasional a**hole with the nasty comment but for the most part nobody cared; if somebody was going to like me or not it had nothing to do with my chubbiness. They are being way too over the top with their movement, and I think theyre missing the point of obesity awareness

My take on it: As someone recovering from an eating disorder, recovering into an average body on the curvier side (5'7 and like 140 lbs) was very difficult. Embracing food freedom and getting rid of fear foods was a big part of recovey. So, I understand the whole premise of where they're coming from. However, there is SUCH a huge difference between being obese and being slightly larger. Some people are on the thicker side genetically, however, you do not get to obesity because of "genetics." There is a difference between loving yourself at every size, and being healthy at every size. And part of loving yourself IS taking care of yourself. For me that meant gaining weight, for others that may mean losing it. Everyone has a natural set point where their weight tends to sit when they're exercising frequently and eating a healthy variety of foods. For me, that's 140-145ish lbs. For someone shorter than me that may be in the 120s, maybe you're quite tall and it's in the 160s, or whatever it may be when you're at your healthiest. An important part of that is practicing intuitive eating, eating when you're hungry and stopping when you're full. HOWEVER, big however, before you can do this you have to get your NORMAL Hunger cues back. For example for me, I had lost my hunger cues for the most part, eating a regular meal made me feel so uncomfortable. But I had to get those regular Hunger cues back before I was able to practice intuitive eating. So, for someone who is obese, they also have to work to get normal Hunger cues back. And that probably means eating at a regular healthy caloric intake. There is a difference between being body positive and endangering your health.

Honestly I understand that people want to be accepted for their body type, and humans should respect each other for who are, period. But, I don’t agree on promoting extreme obesity to the point it’s almost promoting early death and extreme health issues. My family struggles with obesity, and i found out the hard way though my father what happens to morbidly obese bodies. He almost died this past December. We thought he was having a heart attack, or an aortic dissection. Instead it was pericarditis, and the doctors said it can happen to anyone at anytime. The bad thing with my dad at 400 lbs, was during surgery he was almost too big to the procedure on. They almost needed to crack his ribcage open.
After the surgery, 4 hours later, the doctor came and literally ripped us a new one for how fat my dad was and then that he almost died on the operating table because of his weight.
So yeah, I don’t care to hear about the fat acceptance warriors scream that weight won’t hurt them or cause death later in life. It does, and my dad now has a second chance at life and wants to be healthy and fit.

I really appreciate the fact you mentioned that there are some good parts to the body positive movement. As I feel a lot of times people become so pro or against, that they forget that the phrase “in moderation” can apply to circumstances like this. It’s okay to have a “moderate” approach to body positivity (of course this is all in my opinion - I am not a psychologist or a doctor by any means) but I see so many people get so riled up. They forget what the core principle is - to love your perceived flaws and strive to be better for yourself because you know you are worth more. Body positivity is certainly not putting others down or trying to box people into what you want to be the perceived normal. I think reminding people to think about pros and cons in these situations is powerful and I commend you for bringing attention to that. Great content :)

Thank you! Someone with both logic and an understanding of how bodies should work!
I was a cross country and track runner through highschool and college. Since I’m only 5’1 when I’m standing up really straight and trying to giraffe my way into 5’2, my weight tended to be around 105. After graduating, the combo of no longer being on a competitive team and the slower metabolism, I shot up to around 125 in the following years. It stayed like that until around October of last year when I realized that I was the reason I gained weight and outgrew all my favorite clothes and felt bad all the time. So I’ve been exercising, but moreover, I actually track what I eat. I don’t think I’ve been at a calorie deficit since college...
Now I’m almost back to my college weight and I feel super proud. It has been *so hard* to keep up. I have to really plan beforehand to avoid eating 3 Big Macs for dinner. Weight loss is hard. I would be lying if I said that I wanted to stay bigger. I’d be super lying if I was caught up in the body positivity movement and saying I liked having a slow, heavy body more than a fit and trim one.

I honesty cannot pinpoint every single thing you have said that inspired me, because I find something in absolutely every video. You have given me the confidence to work hard, to not hate my natural hair (I am mixed and inherited Jamaican hair) but also not feel bad for wanting to wear wigs, and even inspired to make a huge life decision.
I want to become a personal trainer and nutritionist. I have been a dog walker for years and it is taking a lot out of me. It has been so hard to keep going with my fibromyalgia and I had no idea what on earth I could possibly do if I had to stop...But through my weight loss journey and watching your videos, I discovered a passion for nutrition and I realized I can use what I learned for me, with other people. I love helping people and have already been helping a few of my friends on their journies!
I plan to go to school next year after I move! I guess I really just want to say thank you for inspiring me and being an amazing person. Your sharing your own struggles and being so honest really helped me discover things about myself and is helping me look forward to the future!
OH! at the beginning of 2019 I was 215lbs, now at the same time this year I am 168lbs with daily exercise, plant-based eating, and 16:8 intermittent fasting, all of which I am happy to do for the rest of my life! Weightloss is about healthy habits for life and I want to help other people find what works for them!
Thank you so much, Michelle! I am sorry for my ramble..I got emotional.
Love from a fellow dog mom (also two cats and a bunny)!
