Actually, the director of Pulgasari, Shin Sang-Ok, was investing the disappearance of his ex-wife, Choi Eun-Hee, from Hong Kong in 1978. When he went looking for her, he himself was captured by North Korean forces.
After years of separate humane but strict imprisonment followed by multiple escape attempts by Shin, they were finally reunited five years later at a dinner party where he revealed his plan for them to not only make movies for Kim and North Korea's entertainment, but to be remarried! How romantic...
After Pulgasari was completed, the pair traveled to Austria for a film festival. They managed to slip past their escorts and escape to the US embassy in Vienna where they requested political asylum.
Eventually, they resettled to Los Angeles, where Shin worked under the anglicized name Simon Sheen and directed/produced two of the infamous 3 Ninjas movies. Finally in 1994, Shin moved permanently back to South Korea followed by his wife in 1999. He continued to work on movies until his death in 2006. Choi later passed away in 2018.
How this hasn't become a major motion picture yet is beyond me 😅
