  • As one year comes to a close and another begins, ASU President Michael Crow reflects on a cold Christmas Eve 50 years ago, when Apollo 8 orbited the moon and a moment of inspiration would alter the course of his life and the future of Arizona State University.

This is a wonderful example of the experiences of many from my generation and beyond. A decade earlier, I and many of my young friends stood in our front yards hoping to catch a glimpse of Sputnik 1. From that event, and all that followed, I earned my PhD at ASU, became an engineer and had the opportunity to work on a NASA project training astronauts to land the Shuttle, designed a newborn ICU, and had a short tenure as a department chairman at Grand Canyon University. My young friend Rodney was equally affected by those events, but while I heard President Kennedy call for a man on the moon, Rodney heard him call to get America moving again. Rodney just ended an eighteen year tenure as President, University of Texas at Tyler. We, along with Dr. Crow, are Heirs to the Legacy that flowed from WWII and the Greatest Generation.

Using technology to educate is what we all should be working on. Providing education to all, regardless of economic status furthers the growth and spirit of America.
